@@joere-uploader5766 Less Than Zero sucked. It had potential to be good, but it had shitty writing. Robert Downey Jr. did really well with the material he was given though.
This movie was super depressing, kinda like the last two yrs of the 80's . I think it had something to do with black Monday . Gotta say though this movie is so '80's that it hurts
@SavvyMuhon I hear what you're saying. The plot was pretty weak. Back in the day I really liked it. But I was also very young. It had like a cult- like aura about it where it was a great movie amongst the cool kids. Crack was still a relatively new drug (I think) and drew almost an excitement. The two things that I believe gave it this recognition were RDJ's performance but even more so was the film's soundtrack that was produced by Rick Rubin and Def Jam records.
This was hands down the greatest book-to-movie translation ever done. As always there is more to the book because it spells it out directly to your mind but this is the one time ever I felt the director told the story the writer intended rather than putting his own spin on it
I shall have to respectful disagree with you there Larry. There are MANY movies that are an amazing adaptions from A LOT of amazing books... I agree that this a great adaption of the book... BUT alas "Great" is not perfect (or near perfect) Please allow me to make MY suggestion towards 'Near perfect adaptions of books' 1- The Godfather 1+2 2- The Lord Of The Rings 3- The Shawshank redemption 4- Goodfellas 5- Missery 6- The Green Mile 7- Fight Club 8- To Kill A Mockingbird 9- A Clockwork Orange 10- Stand by me Of course there are others like: No country for old men There will be blood Apocalypse Now Etc But this movie is 'not bad' (boarding on 'Great') for me. Just watched this movie for first time yesterday. Instantly one of the best movies I ever seen. And MJF is Oscar material here. Period. What a movie. So well shot and story well told. Mind blowing. Mind blowing.
I love this novel, so I’m among the few who at least “like” the movie, although the book is much stronger. First chapter of the novel is sublime, on its own.
I had never heard about this movie until I started reading MJF's memoir "Lucky Man". Halfway thought and really enjoying it. Now I want to see the movie too:)
I love MJF. I have a crush on him since 2 years and I'm a young woman. 😜 This movie is a little boring, but has deep meaning. Acting is also very good and soundtrack is exellent.
Never got around to watching this movie. If I did, I clearly don't remember it. I will try (again), but from the looks of it, it may be a hard watch. That's probably why I never had in interest, no matter how many times I passed by it on the shelves at Blockbuster Video. And I watched A LOT of late 80s movie hits when they were new. Two of my favorites are Working Girl, and Baby Boom. Can never get tired of those time capsule gems.
I'm not much of a reader but Bright Lights, Big City is one of a handful of books I have read multiple times. The others are The Bell Jar and A Clockwork Orange.

You hit the nail on the head! Phoebe Cates had such an ugly hairstyle in this movie...and, even more annoying, her role was left on the cutting room floor.
He's not an alcoholic in the movie, nor is a drug addict, though he does do a lot of coke in it. He's a guy who had his wife leave him and giving no explanation as to why. He's then going out to heal that hole while simultaneously dealing with the death of his mother and being in a job that he doesn't like. All of that hits at the same time and it's about how we deal with things in our life.
This movie is soo late 80's . Even the trailer voice guy. Brings u back .

This is a brilliant drama film, in my opinion. Michael is so admirable for his role here. Tracy... what a charm!

I don't think the film itself is very well done but man, does Michael J. Fox kill it here. He was very good.

Prince did a song for the soundtrack "good love" 💜
What’s the song that’s playing in the trailer?
Pump up the Volume by MARRS and Kiss & Tell by Bryan Ferry.
It’s a hard movie to watch. But, it was the 80’s
And, what, Permanent Midnight was released a decade later.
The lighting is ironically very dark and uninspiring, at least in the trailer
