    that big sensor you bought is a pancake type one, and they are very sensitive to damage if a lateral force is applied, even something like 5% of their capacity is lateral, you destroy it. Do not ask why I know.
    The piston setup you designed is very good to avoid that. Just make sure the top "piston" part cannot go sideways at all, so the sensor only experiences downward force.

  • @loekietap
    @loekietap 6 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    @15:09 push the cylinder, not the piston, just put it upside down. therefore if you press something with liquids the cylinder cannot fill and potentially damage the sensor.

    When you do crush different things at specific measurements of pressure, it would be helpful to translate the number into something the viewers can visualize, like the weight of three cars, 17 refrigerators, 350 Anni's... the more funny, random, difficult to pronounce in English, yet still mathematically accurate, the better.

    Im a scale technician, I think your load cell and indictor will be fairly out of calibration. I saw you only set the Zero in the video but I didn't see you set the span. To calibrate you have to set the zero as you did and then set the span where you have to put a known test weight, typically near the capacity of the load cell so anything over 100 tonnes in your case would be okay to set the span then it will be accurate. Cool video though I can't wait to see what you do with it.

    • @villageidiot4020
      @villageidiot4020 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are probably very right. I have read one load cell indicator manual and setting the span with a known weight should be the standard procedure. The indicator has no idea if you have a 300 kg or 150 tonne load cell, it only sees signal strength voltage as a response to the excitation voltage, but it has to know the exact relation to milli- or microvolts per milligram, gram, kilogram, tonne, pound, ounce or so on. And there's also load cell signal linearity calibration.

    What about to somehow modify the press's table, so when you do crushes as usual, you also press the sensor too with the crush subject! ☺ So, basically make a new table for the press, but cut a hole in the center (under press's piston) for the sensor and the sensor's "piston" is flat with the surface of the table. ☺ Oh, and also maybe good idea to make a protective transparent cover for the sensor's display unit, so that can't get dirty during crushes...

  • @franktaylor7617
    @franktaylor7617 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could use an O ring for the seal.
    Probably a good idea to have an access hole in the bottom in case it gets stuck. You could push it up and out.
    Probably need a way to pull the piston out too?

    I see a possible problem if the tube is relatively tight fit around the sensor. the cable connection on the side of the sensor is not going to allow you to drop it into the welded tube during install.
    may need to bolt the bottom plate to the tube rather than weld it on. that way you can put the hole/slot in the bottom of the tube for the cable, install the sensor with the cable aligned with the slot, then bolt the base on.

    Does your press ever break down, say blow a hose or pressure pump housing? At my work we make bales from woodchips with a 40ton machine that compresses the cutter chips into a 25kg cube and the thing likes to blow alot of stuff up regularly :D
    Last time the whole leg of the biggest cylinder/piston snapped off the welds, and the whole thing dropped down :D It also likes to snap 16mm thick 10.9 bolts around the "Nozzle" area where the cube comes out of, makes a good BLAM sound and nuts go flying around..

    That ring with the bolt holes which fits around the top part of the sensor appears to be meant to be the top of the container you wish to build, and the top part of the sensor will replace the piston you designed. Either that or it could be built into the bed of the press so it is flush, with the sensor beneath, in a container held in place with the bolts. All you need to build is the bottom and sides with place to bolt it together. When the sensor is not to be used, a slug could be placed in the hole which would not reach it.
