  • In this video I check out the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 G2 zoom lens from a videographers point of view. Can it be a better choice than the Sony G master and Sigma ART offerings? As ever I’ll look at its features, the build quality, the user experience and the value for money. Enjoy!

I just bought this lens a month ago as an upgrade to the Sony kit zoom lens. I do find the AF a little slower at times and does hunt or miss once in a while but the build quality/image quality coupled with the F2.8 for the price definitely makes this a great buy IMO. Had I been able to find a used copy in my area I would have gone for it sooner. In the end I felt it was worth getting it new as it meant being able to upgrade my images now!

Absolutely agree and it was the first lens I bought with my Sony FX3. I'm usually shooting run & gun and appreciate the longer reach, especially with clear image zoom. It's very nearly a 28-112 f2.8 lens which is very flexible for my work. I programmed the lens button to switch between AF and MF making it easy for me to change that in a pinch. BTW nice that I was able to do this with a compatible USB cable and not a lens dock as needed with some other lenses. The tough part was comparing it to the Sigma 28-70 but I felt Tamron was just enough better in just enough areas for me to lean towards it.

That's a lens I have my eyes on for some time now ... when Sony launched their new 24-50 G some days ago, I was very excited about that because I mainly use 35 and 50mm, but having 24mm on a 7R body would be useful to shoot 4K in APS-C crop mode (results in 35mm with less noticeable rolling shutter). However, when I saw that this Sony comes in at 1299€, I immediately thought about this Tamron again. Around New Year, it was down to about 700€ in my region and that's nearly half the price. Tamron has made a lot of very good compromises with their lenses for Sony FE in recent years. And if you hear Dustin Abbott praising this one as nearly a GM alternative, that's a statement.
What you pointed out here is very much true: I always read comments under Tamron lens review videos where people talk about how bad the build quality is or whatsoever. I don't know what these people smoke. Yes, Tamron's lenses are "plasticky" as these people call them, but they do in no way feel cheap or bad. If I take a look at some Sony G lenses and their "rubber gasket", it is so thin, you could just eliminate it and wouldn't miss anything. I have owned several Tamrons and they were all quite robust with a very solid gasket on the mount. However, there are people who think their image looks million miles better just because the lens they have captured it with was a lot more expensive. That's just not the case. There is the 35 1.4 GM which suffers from focus breathing the same way your old Samyang did but according to their thinking, it must be a better lens because it's branded GM and costs about 1500€. To be honest, I shoot a Tamron 35 2.8 prime mainly on my 7R III which might be one of these lenses people are the most critical about due to AF and focus breathing (both not great, that's right). However, this lens comes in below 200€ and it gives you plenty of sharpness and contrast from edge to edge even wide open plus you can focus down to about 14cm near. If I don't want the AF to click all the time, I just switch it to manual focus or lower the speed of the AF. People should care less about their pricing, brands and materials and just try to make the best of what they've got. Most of these "modern" lenses as you called them in the video aren't bad. All of them have their flaws (see this 35/1.4 GM for instance), you just have to know how to work with it or in which scenarios it might be better to use different gear. Knowing what you do and what you need for it is very beneficial not only for the outcome of your recordings, but for your finances too. :D And that's the point with this Tamron standard zoom lens, too. It's excellent from everything I have read, heard and seen about it. If you are not preconceived by a missing G or GM logo, you can do excellent work with it.

That PRS and Les Paul though 😮‍💨🔥 I just got the Tamron about a week ago and so far I am loving it, saved a lot of $ compared to the Gmaster and it’s plenty sharp and quick to focus.

A quality review of a quality lens. I have mine for a year now and still am trying to get steadier footage when using it handheld. Without any question the photography results are exceptional, wheras videography can be a bit tricky..

I agree with you! When I shifted to mirrorless some years ago I started with the f/4 zooms for sony, and then over time collected nice primes thinking it would be a good way to go. When the G2 came out I decided to give it a try - being a faster lens than my f/4 24-70, and very positive reviews saying that its sharpness and bokeh rivaled the original GM 24-70. I am very happy with it. Another bonus - the lens also has a decent close focusing distance. Cons are that there is no AF/MF switch, but there is a programable button. And I don’t think it works as well with some of the newer camera’s auto/intelligent features. For photography though, it’s an excellent lens. I have had no issues with AF. For me the biggest con: the lens hood is complete trash. I sat on it and it shattered. I couldn’t find an in stock replacement at the time so I bought a Vello version for the OG 28-75 - which doesn’t quite fit, but will do when I can get a replacement. I enjoyed your review and really appreciate reviews that are more than one day after release!

but alas on the first day i lost my lens hood in the forest where i go to take photos.
do you know if the G1 hood can fit the G2 ? thankyou !

I only have primes at the moment plus the kit 28-60 zoom. I really want a lens like this, but that 28mm :( - I wish it was 24-70 or even 24-60 at this weight/size!

How does this lens compare to the Sigma 28-70mm lens? They seem to be closer in size and weight.

I own the Samyang 24-70mm f2.8 and although its nice to have the wider 4mm, it's not worth carrying around almost double the weight.
That lens is 1027g and I regret not going for this Tamron instead.
But I ordered this G2 lens a week ago, and I am delighted.
I don't really need the extra 4mm on the wide end anyway because I mainly prefer longer focal lengths and this lens is perfect!
    Sharp, lightweight and small.
Good build quality & the bokeh is also very good.
Autofocus is great too but my copy focus hunted a little bit so I sent it back to get a replacement.
Just had a bad copy I think.
But overall, this lens is much better than Sony GM II in terms of size, weight & value.

I also have the Samyang and I constantly think about changing to the Tamron. My only concern is extra handshake when shooting handheld video (as it's primarily what I shoot). Have you noticed it being that different? I can imagine the Tamron's weight balance would make it more ergonomic to shoot with too!

    • @paiman_
      @paiman_ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@petrolpoodle6617 I have noticed that a tiny bit of micro jitters are a little bit more prominent but it's honestly nothing that the Active stabalization within the camera can't fix when shooting video. Not sure if your camera has that feature.
I'm super happy with it. Finally I don't get tired carrying around over 1KG lens over the entire day. This lens is very very good.
No wonder why it's praised so highly.
The only thing is the 4mm on the wide end. If you're ok with 28mm, I say go for it. I personally shoot more photos than video but honestly, this lens is worth it because of the size & weight.
Hopefully this answers your question buddy.

My dealbreaker was color...Tamron makes them a bit punchier and Sigma has more neutral/natural look...which is a bit more pleasing to my eyes!
