    Joining the French foreign legion is always an option for learning an extra language, although perhaps a bit of an unconventional method to do so..

    I just met my chinese girlfriend two weeks ago.
    She doesn't speak german so we can only talk in english.
    But I've been busy learning chinese, after two weeks I know (and can write) more than 50 characters and sometimes I don't even have to translate her text messages anymore (:

    I think Duolingo is not bad, to a degree. Beyond a certain stage of learning, immersion is best, or going to a night school, and as Alina says, switch into the target language as much as possible
