    100% with you guys on this. Worked my way up to Open tournaments in Florida back in the day. We loved it when some dude would rip the ball and a defender would just lip it using this technique. Dana Camacho was the master of this style of defense, so annoying. Taylor Crabb has a bit of this in his game as well. (He's a pretty friggin good defensive player). Love the videos guys, keep it up please.

    This is wild!!! I've been having this tendency on/off to scoop hard driven balls when put in a fight or flight scenario on the court. I was doubting it because honestly it feels ugly, but it is effective and allows you to recover your platform if it turns out you are dealing with an off speed shot or a tape shot.
    Thank you for the affirmation!

    I've been doing this defense since I was 12 in Puerto Rico, I'm 44 now and no one has given me grief about it. Another advantage of this defense is when a ball is driven hard to your head you can get hands up quicker to protect yourself.

    Great video. I've seen a lot of incorrect calls on this, so thank you for the confidence to challenge those. Question: What happens if you do not react quickly enough and the ball hits your open hand? Is that then a lift? I know if it bounces of your hand, and your hand goes down only, with no upward motion, you should be fine, but what if you go upward with the ball as it hits your open hand while you're scooping? Is that a lift?

    • @masonjohnson5755
      @masonjohnson5755 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lift is prolonged contact. On a slow ball prolonged contact is illegal. My understanding is that on hard driven or “reaction based” plays on ball, that ball may be momentarily lifted or doubled. I use open hand scoops on diving high line and cutty plays, in those circumstances my hand moves in the upward direction I want the ball to go in. People jump to call lift in this situation but the contact is not prolonged, much like an upward open hand attack, so it is not a lift.

    • @niek3839
      @niek3839 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all, it is almost impossible to lift or 2 touch a spike as you have a lot of leaway with the first ball comming over the net.
      Secondly, it wouldnt as the contact is hard and the time of contact still super slow if its hits your hand. To lift that super hard spike you would almost have to stop it completely or catch it and then move your hand upwards.

      What is a lift? Can anyone find the word lift in any volleyball rulebooks? There is no such thing as a lift. The referee's sign for illegal contact is an open hand coming up, which makes a lot of people think a 'lift' has-been called, but it is just an illegal contact. Illegal contact is any prolonged contact with the ball, and that includes from below, what is often called a lift, or from behind, which is sort of a throw. I've had calls against me from refs who don't understand the rules simply because I contact the ball from below with an open hand. This is TOTALLY LEGAL UNLESS you make prolonged contact. It's harder to avoid prolonged contact with an open hand because the hand tends to cup the ball, but if you hit it with a flat palm or the heel of the hand it should be allowed. The game is called 'volley' ball, which is why any contact that is a volley is acceptable. Some leeway is given on the first touch, where a hard driven ball might contact a person in two places. This is permitted simply to make for better rallies, and because it is quite difficult for a ref to actually spot a double contact on a hard driven ball.

    what is meant by shoulders behind the ball?

  • @DaOneEnOnly
    @DaOneEnOnly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can't believe this was three years ago!

  • @vballinhb
    @vballinhb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So if someone is hitting from the outside, should your shoulders be 45 degrees to the net (straight toward the hitter), parallel with the net, or somewhere inbetween? I find that I dig many hard driven balls hit from the outside that end up being overpasses and out wide, maybe because not enough of my body is facing back toward the center of the court. Thanks for the great videos!

    • @zero_x93
      @zero_x93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matt Gonzales i personally look for a medium of squaring off to the shoulders+swinging tendencies (does he hit the seam often or does he swing more across his body)+finding the center of the court... way easier said than done

  • @invictuz4803
    @invictuz4803 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So it's clearly not a double because it only hits one of your arms. But here's a dumb question: is the ref saying it won't be a double even if it bounces off both arms separately because it was just a reaction (not intentional)?

    So everyone tells me that hitting with one arm is a carry. I don't understand this because you say it isn't, but everyone says it is😭 like are you just not supposed to move your arm? Should it stay still other then moving to the ball? I don't get it

  • @Odenaren
    @Odenaren 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video! Will definitely try it. But I must make a comment on the referees interpretation of the rules. I’m a referee as well and when talking about hard driven balls and slightly extended contact it’s only during so called “overhand with fingers”. I’m surprised he doesn’t mention it. So if you hit the ball with your forearms it’s fine. It’s a hit or bumb. But if you scoop it with your hands and fingers with extended contact when they are not “over hand” it’s for sure a lift no matter how hard driven the ball is. I saw Crabb in a video doing that kind of lift after a block and it was let go by the ref. But because it’s not overhand with fingers it should have been called for lift. All the best!
    /Oskar

      @sananton2821 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rules say EVEN with overhand fingers. Not ONLY.

  • @Red87star
    @Red87star 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff but aside from sending this vid to players later as proof it's NOT a lift or double, I'd really like to hear specific definitions that differentiate legal scoop and alllll those bad hits this gets grouped into by the unknowing majority who WILL be calling scoops illegal.
    Should be obvious. Try for solid singular contact on arms > palms/fingers. No torso turning n pulling of arms / swinging up or around with extended contact.
    Hard driven only seems key. None of the above are easily possible if driven IMO. Guess I'm looking for a very simple clear difference to lay claim if called against.

    th-cam.com/video/JTS917r8XVg/w-d-xo.html I've seen this video referenced by a couple different forums and other posts. It does a good job explaining both the open hand under hit as well as the official setting rules. Definitely not how it's called in most rec games but it's the official way.
