Hawaiian huli huli chicken originated in 1955 when Honolulu-based businessman Ernest Morgado whipped up a teriyaki-inspired sauce based on a recipe handed down from his mother. He slathered it all over some grilled chicken, and served it to a large group of local farmers.

Huli means to turn in Hawaiian. The dish was named this because of the chicken turned on the spit over the coals over and over. I'd be curious to have them try actual Native Hawaiian foods such as lau lau (substitute chicken for the pork), poi, and poke.

  • @martna1

Why is it called huli huli chicken?
A bit sticky, sweet and smoky, it was an instant hit. It's called “huli huli” because huli is the Hawaiian word for “turn” and huli huli chicken is turned constantly as it is cooked.

  • @supaaturtle
    @supaaturtle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Aloha! Glad to see that you all enjoyed huli huli chicken. Huli means to turn, flip, reverse or curl over. Grilling this chicken is difficult as it can burn easily so you have to huli (turn over) the chicken to prevent it from burning.
I'm from the moku (island) of Molokai in Hawai'i, would love to see you folks try more mea'ai (food) from Hawai'i.

Given how much these gentlemen speculate on how foods are prepared, I think it would be fun to have an occasional cooking class and teach them how to prepare some of their favorite foreign dishes. We've already seen some of them cook before. Many of the dishes they've tasted use ingredients that would be readily available to them, so much of it would just be new ways of preparing familiar foods. And learning to cook a dish from another culture helps cement the idea that we're all more alike than different.

Try it with legs, wings and breasts too!
Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs: You can use chicken breasts but they can dry out and not be as flavorful.
Unsweetened Pineapple Juice: You can find this in the canned fruit section sometimes as well as the juice section of your grocery store.
Soy sauce: Low Sodium soy sauce will work here too.
Brown Sugar: The sugar will caramelize the chicken and gives it a beautiful flavor.
Ketchup: This will add flavor and richness.
Chicken Broth: Adds flavor to the marinate, look for low sodium if you desire.
Fresh Ginger Root Grated: I can often find the ginger in the produce section of my grocery store.
Minced Garlic: Fresh minced garlic is best but you can used jarred to save a bit of time.
    Green Onions: Sliced for garnish.
    Let’s Make Some Grilled Chicken!
Super simple and easy, but big on flavor, this is going to become a staple in your grilling rotations.
Marinate: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, chicken broth, ginger, and garlic. Reserve 1 cup sauce for basting. Add the chicken thighs and sauce to a ziplock bag and marinate for at least 3 hours or overnight.
Grill It: Grill chicken, covered, over medium heat for 6-8 minutes on each side or until no longer pink. Baste occasionally with reserved marinade during the last 5 minutes. Garnish with green onions if desired

@@typ044 Thank you, that's good to know because we've been to a couple of very formal places while visiting and I always want to try to fit in locally. I love Hawaii and one of the reasons is it's laid-back atmosphere. My brother-in-law is Hawaiian and has introduced us to many great things. I even taught my (mainland) grandson the "Humu Song". My hubby makes Guy Fieri's recipe for Huli Huli Chicken and I can honestly say that it's some of the best chicken I've ever tasted! I knew when I saw the title that the guys were gonna love it!
Welcome Mr. Umer! Its so nice to see a new face at the table! I hope he's going to be around from now on!
I was initially wondering if he might be related to our beloved GSK, but then he mentioned his tribe and I figured he must just share the Khan name. I still get confused about the name "order" of the Pakistani people...
As in, which name is considered to be first and last, etc. I do know that when there are certain names at the end, they refer to regions or tribes, as it is with Raffique Chaudhary's "Gujjar", but I believe that the name order is somewhat different than what's typical here in the US and Europe.
We generally have our first or "Christian" name, often a second or "middle" name and then our last or "Sur"name.
I believe that in India or Pakistan, it might also differ from tribe to tribe.

I love these guys. I hope someone can provide them the recipe for this chicken so they or someone in their family can prepare it for them. They should also be told what side dishes are commonly served with it so they can have the full experience. I have never had it but I suspect the man that thought the sauce was made from ketchup, vinegar, sugar and spices wasn't too far off. He must know how to cook BBQ himself or have watched someone prepare a sauce.
I would love it if each of these men would bring in a popular dish from their village to have members of the crew taste and describe. I'd love to know what are common and/or special dishes for each of them.

I recommend having them try popular Thai dishes, next. Green Curry with rice is a popular dish, as is Pad Thai (a dish involving rice stick noodles tossed in a tangy/savory/sweet tamarind-based sauce). They can feature any of a number of proteins such as chicken, shrimp, tofu, etc (for these guys I'd go with good ol' chicken). I find that Thai food makes good use of combining salty, spicy, sweet, savory, sour, and umami into one dish, much like Huli Huli Chicken.
