    I’m from New Orleans. Let’s see their gumbo. Oh my god nooooo. That is definitely not gumbo from the United States. Not no where near gumbo from here. Maybe that’s how they make it in other parts of the world, but not southern Louisiana. The rice is a small amount and gumbo poured over it. Not set on the side of it. And that just looks dry. Sorry, but I’m from New Orleans and gumbo is a famous dish down here. It’s all about the roux.

      They do their best with the items and knowledge they have access to. Believe me, many Americans "think" they are eating or cooking authentic dishes from other parts of the world that are truly a very poor, Americanized representation. Even if you attempt to make a truly authentic dish, there are some ingredients that are difficult for us to source even in such a large, diversified country as the US. Imagine what it's like for them to attempt authentic dishes unknown to their area.

    • @Kelnx
      @Kelnx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      True gumbo is pretty much what you got put into a pot, turned into a sort of stew/gravy and served with rice. We live in times where things like gumbo have been pigeon holed into an expected set of ingredients and method. But what gumbo was in the past, where it came from, was a way to make use of what you had, or even leftovers, to make something edible and filling.
      It's a food that came from poverty, like so many great foods we enjoy today. There is no one gumbo. Just like there is no one stew or soup or "shepherds pie" or pizza. All of these foods came from people too poor to rely on a recipe or the ability to get a hold of the same ingredients every time.
      It's gumbo, any way you slice it. It has the basic idea of gumbo, and that's all that is required. It's passed on from Creole food, past that from West Africa. What we know today as gumbo is about the most decadent version of it compared to what used to be known as gumbo. Even a roux is a later addition to it from the French affluent chefs of New Orleans.

    • @Kelnx
      @Kelnx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@julianfleming5627 Shrimp and crab are considered Halal from what I could find. Lobster and crawfish aren't. But there seems to be a lot of debate about it among Muslims, and most of it seems to have to do with the method in which these creatures are killed. It seems to be specific about if the animal is boiled alive, which would make it non-halal. If the creature is killed quickly before cooking it in whichever method, it should be halal.
      That can be problematic for crawfish specifically which tend to turn bad immediately after death (which is why they are boiled alive in the first place) unless you freeze them first (which I don't think is allowed under halal rules considering it's still a slow death). You can easily kill a crab or lobster before boiling without affecting the flavor or safety of the meat.
      Shellfish are specifically not Kosher according to Jews, but Islam seems to have a lot of elbow room on the matter. Overall, it seems most Muslims don't seem to think eating shellfish is sinful. Pork specifically seems to be a line they do not cross though. Most andouille sausage in gumbo is at least half pork, if not 100%. So they would have had to use beef/chicken sausage for that. They could have used gator sausage too, since apparently that has been ruled to be halal.

    That’s a lot of rice and I’m from New Orleans where we eat quite a bit of it. If you served someone that much rice with their gumbo there, they’d probably laugh, thinking you were playing a prank. I just can’t stop watching these guys eat. They have such an appreciation beyond what they like to taste and more so the spirit in which they believe the food was prepared. Nice.

    Has anyone noticed that they put about 3 times too much rice and almost no gumbo (or whatever that was)?
    Maybe I should rephrase that to, did anyone “not” notice that they put way too much rice and not nearly enough gumbo? (at least anyone from the southern USA)
    In know many or most of these dishes are questionable as far as authenticity but this one might be a top 5 all time.

    I'm African American, and it's a pleasure to see these men eating our food across the world. However, can tell they weren't big fans of the dish, but I still enjoyed seeing how their minds process information on dishes I've eaten. I will say that there wasn't nearly enough gumbo in the bowl to get a full experience of gumbo. The gumbo to rice ratio should be about 90% gumbo, 10% rice. In other cultures, rice is usually the star of the dish, so I can understand why they used so much rice, but with gumbo, the emphasis is on the stew, not the rice.

If they had gumbo like you can get in New Orleans (even without the forbidden meats), they’d be a lot more excited about it because well made gumbo is delicious.

    Gumbo's purpose is not to make rice flavorful. It is a soup or a stew.🙂
    You can bury a little rice in the bottom of the bowl if you like. Or you can eat it with cornbread like we used to a lot. Gumbo is even good with plain bread or even roti.

    There are 3 types of Gumbo and Gumbo is an African word foe Okra. The first Gumbo is Native American and thickened with the dried crushed leaf of a tree This is file Gumbo. The second is French thickened with a wheat paste called a roux. You must cook the roux to the right color. The third is African and cooked with okra as a thickener. You can add more than one thickener and more than one meat. Modern Gumbo will have sausage too. 3 vegetables are the trinity the base Capsicum onion and cellery. You want good Gumbo add MOJO. This is garlic oil and spices. This is a truly blended dish

    Red lentils with rice sounds delicious. I’ve only had green lentils. Gumbo comes from Louisiana, which is also famous for a red bean and rice dish (kidney beans). Sadly, the correct way to make red beans and rice would exclude them from eating it, as it includes ham or sausage to achieve its rich, smoky flavor.

    Perfect timing on this one for me. I just had chicken and cajun sausage gumbo tonight or supper. I also make a mean seafood gumbo that is packed full of shrimp, lump crab meat, crawfish tails, blue crab claws, and some Andouille sausage for a little extra flavor. I use the 20/25 count gulf shrimp, not the smaller salad shrimp found in many restaurant gumbos. And fresh lump blue crab meat. I use two pounds of each of the meats and I make a double batch of the trinity because it is a large pot of gumbo. I make a large loaf of toasted garlic bread to go with the gumbo for those of us that like to sop up the juice in the bottom of the bowl.

    Being from southeast Texas. I had to watch this video. Gumbo is one of my favorite dishes of all time. Southeast Texas and Louisiana are the best places to get GOOD gumbo. What they got isn't what WE would consider good gumbo, and they are missing crackers. Crackers are a stable for like 98% of Cajun dishes. Get you a spoonful of gumbo, put it on a cracker....total game changer.

    From Louisiana... that's way too much rice. You only use a very little rice and a LOT of gravy for gumbo. Sausage,shrimp, chicken, other meats and your seasonings (bell peppers, onions,celery most importantly)...use way less rice next time. It should look like soup with rice in it.
