PLOT: US Navy helicopter pilot Lt Chris Burnett is part of the NATO force observing the peace treaty during the conflict in former Yugoslavia. Bored with routine duties, he flies off his designated route and spots Serb forces breaching the peace agreement, but they spot him too and down his craft. Behind enemy lines and with the Serbs on his trail, his only hope is that his commander sends in a rescue mission.

I know it's no Top Gun, or hyper realistic, but this movie is severely underrated and very entertaining. I thought it was one of Owen Wilson's better roles.
The freaking missile scene is a classic !

Whether or not it was realistic it was still a pretty intense scene. I can’t think of any other war movie with an intense fighter jet scene like that…? You..?

Def unrealistic, that missle didn't even run out of fuel, slowed down just to get the shot of it chasing the plane, and should've lost lock at a certain range since the mountain would've blocked the radar lock from the vehicle.

The entire missile kinematics and such is completely wrong and missiles cannot do that, but the scene of the slow motion ejection is actually very realistic. The explosive bolts firing on the canopy, the hard drives self destructing and the seat firing is incredibly cool.

It was a reinterpretation of the actual event that led to the F117 stealth fighter being shot down over serbia when the pilot punched out and got rescued 24 hours later by Air Force pj’s .
But we as civilians are not supposed to know that.

Through this greatness that Wilson did... I wished for a producer and director who would have enough courage to turn the game IG 1 Project into a series of films and have Wilson be the hero in the role of Jones...

Althought his movie is a pseudo "comedy" - it is nonetheless a great movie, and the jet scenes like this are pretty good for the time.

Technicalities aside, a very competent scene. If you want reality, this clip would be over within 3 mins. So which one would you prefer?

Lmao. Can't take Owen Wilson seriously in just about any roll...
I still love this scene but I think it would have been better and more realistic if they had fired multiple missiles and each one getting defeated until the last 1 or 2 finally take down the aircraft. Like the whole "clipped" part could have been 1 missile taking out part of the aircraft and the last one finally delivering the kill shot. Basically the same scene with more shots going off.

Been there, done that...got the t-shirt. Not a more intense feeling than being being painted by a SAM site...causing your chaff and flares to deploy instantaneously...At night too. Fun times over Kosovo.
In reality 45 seconds before missile would have contacted. Sams don't chase like that
When this came out I was in the navy in a fa18 training squad an we got kicked out of the theater calling out every thing wrong with this movie

What da what kind of missile is that sprayed something first at the jet and then engulfed into flames
It's supposed to represent a blast-fragmentation warhead that punctured the fuel tanks of the jet, which then leaks aerosolized fuel into the slipstream. Only to then get ignited and blow up the aircraft. It's no more realistic than the SAM's chasing the jet around, but that's the theory of what we're supposed to be seeing.
It's a spread of steel flechette, like an oversized shotgun blast

This scene is based on real events, where Serbs shot American Nighthawk F117 jet over Serbian. The debris is still preserved in Serbisn showcases. The pilot ejected, and landed, while Serbs were desperately searching for him through rugged terrain using mountain dogs and other information. However, pilot was saved by timely efforts of Americans Air force.
And this happened during the genocide of Kosovan, as Serbia was not withdrawing her paramilitary forces engaged in genocide, therefore, to increase pressure on Serbia, NATO started bombing of Belgrade, which did resulted in withdrawal of Serb paramilitary forces from Kosovo 🇽🇰.

Hollywood bs. lies. There is a video on TH-cam with airforce pilot reviewing this whole scene. Also in the movie the English translation isn't always correct. Flashy scene but very inaccurate.
