  • A beginners guide to programming CVs with a Hornby Select. "Can Hornby Selects write CVs??" Yes!!! If you need a firmware upgrade I will show you how to check and what to do if you need one (and how much it will cost).
Using two real life examples that a lot of people encounter and are easy to overcome, improving the performance of your DCC locos. The first is changing the sound levels of my Class 37 and my Tornado. The second example is fixing the slow running performance of my Class 37, it is a common problem that faces many locos after the installation of a TTS chip, not just a Class 37.
You can do it too! If you enjoyed this video or got something out of it please consider subscribing, it helps gets these beginner hints and tips out to a wider audience.
My website has more detail on other How To's:
    www.aberhaltjun...
For a full list of all the goodies that you can see on the layout go here:
    www.aberhaltjun...
The specific items that I mention are:
Hornby now sells direct through Amazon and if your local hobby shops are still closed:-
(Affiliates) Hornby Select, direct from Hornby - (affiliate) amzn.to/3JU5nfk
    Class 37 TTS decoder - (affiliate) amzn.to/3f9zVvt
Tornado TTS decoder - (affiliate) amzn.to/3FeV81J
Aberdonian Train Pack - (affiliate) amzn.to/338FJmp
    ViTrains Class 37 - eBay
CV changes to fix the Class 37 slow running stutter.
CV 150 to 1; 151 to 255; 152 to 1; 153 to 255 and 154 to 1. I can’t take any credit for these, my favourite TH-camr Jerry Allen of Kampala Road came up with the fix.
I don't do Patreon or other donation services, any piddly sum I make from an affiliate link click goes towards (its never actually enough to pay for it) running my website.
Affiliate links for stuff I love:

Tried to do as you said with my new Digitrax sound decoder. But after LA when I'm pressing 0.... It's showing on the display. But after that when I'm pressing function...... Neither CA is showing nor the red light flashing. Display showing the 0 and its blinking.
My Hornby Select is 4 years old. I think older versions are not capable to change CVs.

Now a little confused as I purchased my Select as a used unit, I sent of my Select to Hornby for upgrade which they did and returned it back to me, So when I switch the Unit ON I get on my display start as 16-30--03 but you had I think 20-30-03 is that because of the age of my Select being an older unit??

Hi Desh, sure, this puzzled me for a while too. There are a couple of examples of me doing it in this video and also in my Class 37 TTS install video (the really long one), as I was improving the slow running performance and to do that you needed to select CV 255. All you need to do is long press 1 ( if it is greater than 100) or long press 2 (if it is greater than 200). Hope that fixes it for you. Cheers!

Hi Airshow, potentially, a firmware upgrade may certainly help, although if it’s not talking to your loco that may be a bigger problem…. Hi Raymond, apologies in my delay in getting back to you, I have been away with work. I have translated your message, but double check as I have relied on google translate, my French is not superb. The short and good answer, is that nothing needs to change in terms of your layout wiring. However how you connect the Selects to the track IS important. You have to connect your first Select as you normally would but then you connect your second Select to the first one (you'll need a special lead, detailed in the manual). DO NOT connect power to the second select. It sends all of it's signals through your first select and it also gets it's power from the first Select. Let me know how you get on.

Hi , thanks for the video, followed your instructions but for the life of me I cannot turn down the volume on the loco , it’s far too loud , in this case a Bachmann class 24 sound. I put in CV numbers CV182 suggested by Hornby and then CV266 suggested by Bachmann. I must have done this 20 times and no decrease in sound level. Think the default value is 64 so I put in 10 but no change , any suggestions would be appreciated

Yeah you’re at 1.1. 15 quid direct with Hornby. Assuming you need to write CVs? You don’t necessarily need them for loco sounds. It Allows you to alter running speeds and loco volumes etc.

Hi Raymond, with DCC you can have them both, no need for isolators. However make sure you connect the Selects together and ensure you do not have two power supplies, only one is required.

Hi mate very informative ! i have bought 2 R8249 decoders and have been told the select wont work with those decoders? have you had any trouble with the select?

Hi David, no, to date all of the decoders I have used with the Select have been fine. I'm going to get another one to put in my David Lloyd George and will let you know if that one gives me any problems. I have a fleet of around 9 locos I think with various decoders and they are all fine...

I'm the old Hammant & Morgan school DC type and just moved to DCC as well what a let down at my first go!

You’re welcome mate, I almost did the same thing! At least it’s not an expensive mistake (unlike some things in this hobby! :) ) welcome to the dcc world, and don’t worry it’s plain sailing from here… it’s only 2 wires after all!!!

@@AberHaltJunction cheers mate sorry another thing: were your locos running ok before the update?

Hi mate, I didn’t have to update mine, I just did the research on cost etc for the video. However I don’t think not having the update would have made much difference apart from what I show in the vid. Hope this helps. Cheers.
