At 7:05, the reason for this is that the original 1176 (and presumably this pedal) has a ~1ms attack time on the lowest attack setting. On the highest setting, it's microseconds. Almost all other compressors will max out in the millisecond range. So basically this compressor's slowest attack is most other compressors' fastest attack, meaning you don't notice it "kick in" as much, it begins working almost imperceptibly once it's fed input with very little transient signal getting through.

Pretty much anytime you have a question like this- go to the JHS pedals TH-cam channel and you'll find a video or two explaining it. Compressors are used in multiple ways for multiple different reasons- it all depends on what you're looking for and how you set it up. Lots of ppl will use them to add sustain and little bit of a volume lift to a solo, like a boost but you're not adding more grit or saturation- just more sustain and volume. This is usually going to be a milder compression with a slower attack time. Some ppl use them to help get rid of their pick attack, which means they want a super-fast attack time- shredders often use them this way. Because they're using a up/down pick attack- if they don't- you just hear "click, click, click, click..." Angling the pick just right also helps tremendously with this- and the added sustain makes legato lines flow much better. Then country music lead pickers use it to get that whiny, super nasally, clean sound- funk players use it to help squash some of the dynamics, kill some low end, and tighten down on the sound so it doesn't run over itself and sound too muddy. They are subtle- but necessary- and can be finnicky- you have to learn which ones are known for which applications, and how to set them up properly. The 1176 or Cali was used to overdrive the preamp on the board- usually a Neve preamp- and create a very unique DI distortion- Black Dog by Zepplin is a great example of this trick. It was used extensively this way throughout the 70s.

I actually like that it isn't app enabled and prefer that. I already have to connect so many things to other things when I play. I don't want to have to connect to bluetooth and fiddle through my app - one of the reasons why I didn't like the Yamaha THR, i want to access everything in one place.

Being a Cali76 fan, I'd like to see an 1176 shootout.
Then there's the Compadre which is more versatile. I run them both in parallel, series and before/after pre-amp and drives.
If there was a presetable (new word 🤗) Cali76 I'd be all in.
Surprises me that the Single /Dual/Sustain mode isn't foot switchable.

About the 1176. If you are thinking about the Cali76 by Original Audio pedals, that pedal cannot distort. It was specifically designed to compress without distortion, which is not how an actual 1176 behaves … still a lovely pedal though.

That was my instant reaction too when he said it, but presumably that's in comparison with their rack gear? (A single 1176 LN will set you back around £2500, so if you want to run a pair of them in series or parallel like this pedal emulates, you're talking £5000).

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@retrocausality8039 Actually that's relative to their other line of pedals- which are digital, very high end, and run about 400 bucks a piece. I run their Lion '68 - which is their version of a '68 Plexi. You get three flavors of the Plexi-a 68 Bassman, a 68 Plexi, and a 68 Plexi modded for the Brown sound Eddie Van Halen made so popular. It's sounds amazing- but it interfaces with your phone and computer to work properly, and ppl wanted something simpler, that costed less money.

Here's the thing,, unlike most every other compressor, when you turn the release control on an 1176 clockwise it's getting FASTER. Meaning it's releasing back to no compression faster (which you can actually see on the LED) so you're getting shorter sustain effect.

In the video The Captain says that UA are "late to the game" to package an 1176 type compressor in a guitar pedal. But as I understand it this is NOT what UA has done even now. This is as far as I can tell a digital emulation of the 1176, not an analog circuit, in contrast to several competitors. So in my book UA are still not in the game. It doesn't mean the pedal sounds bad, but still... not quite the same thing. Perhaps not an issue for someone using modelling amps etc, but personally, i tend to want a purely analog guitar signal up to the AD converters in the sound card.

Keith Scott's solos on Cuts Like A Knife, especially the tag solo ; required learning in Canadian bar band circles when I was a young guit-fiddler . Agreed. The sustain mode is a good sounding setting... but the dual setting isn't much use unless you want to do a cover version of "Black Dog"...which I've no interest in. I'm leaning towards getting the Max Preamp & Dual Compressor. It would be useful for acoustic guitar, vocals and other instruments. And since it has 2 compressors the "sustain" sound should be achievable running them in series. I have to check if it's possible to blend in the dry signal as that's an important feature for me. The small version in this video has a switch to mix the dry signal but I believe it's one setting, you can't control the amount of dry signal. Then there are other compressors from different companies.... decisions, decisions!

But a compressor goes before the stereo section of my effects, so I'm going to have to keep that 1176 in mind.

Didn’t UA release these a few months back? I’m just not sure why if you’ve spent £200 on this pedal why you couldn’t save a bit more and get the larger and fully featured original pedals for £100 more. I know UA want to sell you everything and give you all the choice to make you bite on their products, but at this point they are just tinkering with the formula of their already great pedals and spinning their wheels. If it ain’t broke, it doesn’t need a 1/3 re-release. Still waiting patiently for their inevitable Marshall amp simulators and their fuzz and filter pedals to come so things can move forward instead of retracing the old ground yet again of giving you something they already made 2 or 3 years ago.

I feel totally vindicated in my hatred of these pedals with a million different "functions" on them. LOL! I always tell people I feel like I suffer paralysis by analysis when they have all kinds of knobs and switches and things.

@@SimpleManGuitars1973 The journey - where you start, where you are, where you intend to go - also matters. I definitely agree with the paralysis by analysis, though it was so complicated I said screw it and cured that issue. I just found a sound I likes. The learning curve is my problem.
I'm retired, doing this on my own, don't play live and have some money to spend and have way less time in the long run. So I decided complexity is a way to educate myself. Like paying for a grad course on audio.
With the Dream 65 it more or less worked. The different cabs and tones got me in the ballpark of the sounds I liked. The mods were interesting. So overall, thumbs up, even though I couldn't update the firmware.
The Max, the compressor, was a failure, at least for now. But the failure forced me to learn more about them, even if I still don't completely get them. Robert Keeley has a good TH-cam video on them, and I bought his Pro version because it was simpler.
However, overall the experience soured me on UA. Which fortunately pushed me to discover Origin Effects, which I love. And I will always choose Strymon over UA in the future. Unfortunately the overall problem didn't go away. I would call it a combinatorial explosion. In some ways Anderton's videos - no matter how valuable, and they are valuable - are demonstrating the pedals in isolation. If Pete was my friend and I lived next door, I'd be building failed pedal chains and asking him every day why they suck. Fun, educational, frustrating. Lots of moving parts.

@@mikem668 Yeah the most compicated pedal I have is the Beetronics ZzomBee but man it's fun. The vast majority of my TH-cam Shorts are an AC30 with like a Fatbee or JRockett Golden Archer. I do have some fun videos with the ZzomBee doing Frankenstein but generally all my pedals are simple and I get along fine with that. I'm sur with patience and know how the other ones could be fun too but I'm a "set it and forget it" guy at this point.

@@SimpleManGuitars1973 I like your set it and forget it goal. Unfortunately, while it sounds simple, gain stacking and knowing whether the pedals play well together complicate it. As does the variety of the music you're interested in. But I agree it's a goal worth seeking.

@@mikem668 Yeah I pretty much know what I want out of my fuzz pedals and what I want out of my delay pedals and I have different overdrives that I think work better for my Les Paul and 335 and ones that work better for my Tele and Strats and I just keep my delay the same all the time as well. Plus really the base tone of a cranked AC30 is really dirty enough that I just have my pedals sorta "barely" there because I love the natural breakup of a Vox so much just in and of itself. I play in a big open room at my house and live on 40 acres and so I can crank my AC30 all the time but I feel really bad for people who have to try and get the sounds they desire at sorta "bedroom" levels. The sound of a cranked tube amp is just heaven to my ears. Which probably explains why I'm constantly asking my wife to repeat herself. But still. LOL!

I like the Orion, but you can honestly get the same sounds and even more options from a DOD Rubberneck, XVive W3 Memory, or some used EHX Deluxe Memory Man. These are also mostly analog and come with the warmth of the BBD chips. UA is just software in a box.
If you wanna go digital, TC Electronic Flashback 2 & EHX Canyon offer more sounds/features.

I have an EHX Canyon and it's a very good pedal. I also tend to find really good echo sounds from cheap pedals like Caline or Azor.

Sure, the 1176 is competing with the Cali76 line of pedals, but they’re all analog and this is still a digital simulation, no? It sounds good, but I don’t want a core effect early in my chain to be digitizing my entire signal. Regardless of price difference, the Cali76 line is still my obvious choice.

These sound great! But the price is $200.. for $100 more you can get the full featured UAFX pedal instead of these less feature versions 🤷🏽‍♂️🥸🤔

Lol😂. $369 Australian is not what I'd consider an affordable pedal. A Behringer or Boss pedal is affordable for example. These are the price of a whole 50 watt Boss Katana or Squier Sonic or Jet Guitar by example. Lol
