After Bruce's parents died, Alfred could of just said "not my problem" and walked away. He really is built different and is an invaluable asset to Batman.
In fact, one issue details that Alfred had plans to eventually leave the Waynes' employ. After all, he had no reason to stay forever, even if he was friends with the Wayne family by this point. Then he saw young Bruce, completely broken and empty-eyed, and his plans no longer seemed important.

Damien would have either had a mental breakdown and given up on himself entirely, or he would have tried to kill Superman in a vengeance-fueled rage and likely would have just gotten himself killed by Superman in the process. So Bruce not telling Damien the truth about who had Alfred killed was most likely Bruce's way or trying to protect Damien and stop him from getting himself killed.
