    Paint strainers weren't available so i got jam / juice / vinegar cloth. I think its a lot finer, is that a problem?
    Also, my comb was found in the middle of a cut down cedar tree so its old and dirty. I've been breaking it up and washing it it. Want to filter out a lot of the impurities before heating, any tips?

    Hi, great video - Thank you so much! Question: When you apply the wax to your cutting board - is it food safe and should I be concerned about any allergies it may course?

    Come to realize that it's Sunday and the thrift stores are already closed, but managed to get a sweet double boiler and a crock pot for $20 off Facebook marketplace. Although because of my electric stove and glass top, I had to raise up the temp... flames from gas are always warmer then electric stoves. So far 25 mins in (latest temp increase was 5 mins ago and no melting yet, although at least I feel heat on the side of the pot . Give it a few more minutes to decide if I need to be in the "red zone"

    When you washed the honey and impurities off the bottom of the melted wax did you use hot water or cold? Thanks

    Hi! How many oz of rendered wax do you get per frame? Approximately.
    Thanks!

    • @AlleyPicked
      @AlleyPicked  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a complete guess since I throw it all into a pile. I would guess 4 ounces on each frame, 2 ounces on each side of the frame.

    What mould can be used?
    Can we use steel mould?

    • @AlleyPicked
      @AlleyPicked  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. Steel is ok. I used plastic because it can be easily popped out of the mold.

      I think I’m going to try this with some of my dad's leftover honeycomb, but use mineral oil instead as vegetable oil will go rancid over time. This is a great video, i like the paint strainer method.

    • @AlleyPicked

      There are many uses. I used it to make butcher block oil: th-cam.com/video/IF3mYznUX8k/w-d-xo.html
      I use the butcher block oil for many other things. It can clean and polish. One of these days I plan to make a video for it's many uses.

      For the North American indigenous tribes, it makes perfect thread coating. I do very fine beading and the thread often gets tangled when I pull through a stitch. Beeswax is rubbed on the thread to help it stiffen up and behave when my thread can be 1-2 meters long.

    New beekeeper here. I attempted for the 1st time to make wax and it turned into a sticky dough like texture... what did I do wrong!?

    • @AlleyPicked
      @AlleyPicked  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll bet you didn't let it drain long enough? What dis you do differently from the video?

    • @jennifershaw8362
      @jennifershaw8362 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlleyPicked I honestly did it differently from watching another video before I found yours.... so 1st off I didn't just use capping wax but I used broken old frames that had tons of honey and was after spinning the honey out. I scraped all the frames and the cappings, I strained over night all the extra honey... as much as I could anyway. Then I just tossed it all in a big pot and melted down. Didn't add water. I think that was my mistake. But then once all melted down I strained it out and that was a big mess! But then I let it harden up but it never really separated or hardened up. It did a little as there was some honey on the bottom that separated from the glop on top but that's just what it was a sticky thick cookie dough like substance instead of the nice smooth hardened wax. Thanks for the reply by the way hope you can help me figure it out! 😀

    Hi i bought honey but did not scrape the wax properly. I just wanted organic honey for the family to enjoy...now no one touches the honey because it has wax in it.. I have no idea how to seperate the pure honey from the without destroying the pure organic flavour. Can you help me please..

    • @AlleyPicked
      @AlleyPicked  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the video I used a mesh paint strainer to separate the wax. Would that work for you?

    • @daveo5067
      @daveo5067 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A fine strainer/filter will work (let the honey warm in the sun to flow better if needed). Also the wax does float to the top so store it in a jar and then scrape it off the top after a day or two. Some people just spread wax and honey right from the comb on their toast and eat it all together. Not my favourite but nothing wrong with eating the wax.
