  • I LOVE drone flutes of all kinds and today I'm sharing with you an alternating drone flute from Singing Tree Flutes in the key of A. I'm also sharing a few tips on playing Native American drone flutes that are sprinkled throughout this video.
    ‪@SingingTreeFlutes‬makes some really interesting drone flutes and we love how they range from spooky and weird to soothing and angelic. Regardless, drones have a special place in my heart for providing some of the most soothing Native American flute music we hear in recordings.

    As usual, a great video, but I have one minor gripe. Having music while you're talking is very distracting. Maybe it's that I have a mild hearing impairment but I always find music behind spoken words to be a real impediment. I've given up on lots of videos because the music makes it really hard for me to focus on the speech. Other than that... very cool. I'm really intrigued by some of these modern drones!

    Great channel, Johny! I appreciate your work! Please, tell me one thing: is it true that any NAF can play in 2 (or even 3) octaves? Any tin whistle can as I know btw. I was wondering wether any NAF flute or drone flute can play in more than 1 octave.

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for asking! Interesting question. Most NAFs can play at least 2-3 notes in the 2nd octave. Some might even reach 4 notes in the 2nd. I don't have any NAFs that go beyond that. The bansuri and some other transverse flutes can play 3 full octaves.

    Wouldn’t it change the key on the drone side if the “E” hole were moved lower?

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for watching and great question! As you can see, the alternating drone hole is right below the 5th on the A side of the flute. So keeping that hole closed gives you the note B, which is the 5th interval of the fundamental A. So opening the hole on the alternating drone side turns the A side into into its perfect 5th, E in the 4th octave. I'm not a flute maker but it makes sense that lowering the hole on the alternating drone side will give you the note appropriate to the position on the A side, which could be a 3rd, 4th and 5th. Haven't seen any of those yet in an alternating drone but High Spirits used to make some multi-chambered flutes that allowed you to control the the 3rd, 4th and 5th with rubber plugs.

    Hi John , I've seen some Drones have holes around the bottom of the Drones. But others haven't, I'm just starting on a F# Drone and mine doesn't have them holes around the bottom. Could you explain,why some do and some don't
    Please. Thank John.

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those holes around the bottom are tuning holes. Some flute makers like to make the flute body a little longer than necessary, mainly an aesthetic. Other flute makers cut the body of the flute off at exactly the length needed for the key of the flute, so no holes needed. The tuning holes effectively stop the sound at that point. Having tuning holes or not makes no difference to you as a player. It is a flute maker thing.

    Have you got harmonic flutes thank you

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All the flutes are harmonically tuned but if you are asking about a Harmony Drone or a Mayan Harmony drone, I do not have those on my site. I do offer regular drones from Ron Stutz of Native Sunrise Flutes. Miguel Medina of Singing Tree Flutes makes Harmony Drones and you can order here:
      singingtreeflutes.com/collections/split-drones
      Please let Miguel know you saw his flutes here! Thank you!
