    5:05 sleep is a super effective spell ... that's a great suggestion (although as a DM I'm not going to help them come up with the option!) - but 5d8 against two goblins, they'll be sleeping like babies. Great videos!

    The coolest thing I ever had in this encounter was when the players alarmed the guards. They then decided to wait outside and when the goblins came out they were lead by Klarg holding a giant shield thez had cobbled together from those craits. All archerery was useless and I turned into a giant route for the players. But goblins not beeing desciplined they just ran after the players. This lead to a running battle that circled around and ended at the cave again, with klarg beeing the final boss:D

    Thanks for the terrific video! It really helped. The first time our wizard & elf duo took on Klarg, they were soundly thrashed, tied up, and sent to Yimeek for processing. After a dubious deal with Yimeek to take out Klarg in four days - and then exchange Klarg's head for a badly wounded Sildar - they were booted out of the cave and they headed back to Phandalin to level up on brawls and side-quests. Four days and one level later, they took down Klarg like champs! Yimeek then wanted 500 gold pieces for Sildar so they took him down too. While Sildar was dropped from a ledge, he was healed by the wizard and joined the party. Now I just need to give the guy more of a personality - he was kind of quiet this time and everyone was forgetting he was there (including me).

    Hey Fred, question from a new DM, here. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read.
    I have 6 players, all brand new, basically. I did expect us to be going slow, but the game seems to be going REALLY slow. Our last session, they began in the kennel with one of the wolves slain, another put to sleep, and another still trying to get out of it's chains. We played for about 2.5 hours and they are still in the kennel, lol. One of the players had managed to scale the crevasse/chimney and get a look at what's up there (Klarg's chamber). I made a perception roll for Klarg and determined that he could hear the PC climbing up. So, he hid behind some stalagmites and the room appeared to be unoccupied, but the PC could see the fire pit coals glowing. But, after 2 hours of nothing much happening (I guess too much meta-gaming and OOC talk) I had Klarg go ahead and send 5 goblins down (through the main passage) to the Kennel. They surprised the characters but were still defeated, besides two goblins who bolted and ran back into the cave. One of the wolves was released and bolted out of the cave (may come back later following the party). My questions is, am I doing something wrong? It just seems ridiculous that the party would start and end in the same room of a dungeon after a 2.5 hour session. Thanks for your expert advise!

    Very good video. I have been contemplating using this dungeon as part of an upcoming d&d campaign, and your insight into running it has proven incredibly useful.
    A quick query though - at around the 16:40 mark you say that the goblin on the bridge would suffer the same penalties as the players for trying to spot them in darkness, but goblins naturally have darkvision so would they not roll / use their passive perception as normal?

    • @HowtoRPG

    Hi! Thank you so much for this video. LMoP is the first campaign ever that I'll DM and I had difficulty with this level :P. I do have one question; do the players have to do something with the wolfs? 12:35 - the plot hole that bothered me here is that the dogs would make a ton of noise before the characters even got sight of them, or at the least, when they approached the room. • @hqueso
      @hqueso 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikelsmith6803 I've run this twice now, and one party, without a sleep spell, annihilated this dungeon. Just blitzed it. A combination of great stealth checks, caution, and a few lucky shots put them in the driver's seat for all the tough fights. The turning point was the elven rogue scouting up the stream unseen by the goblin on the bridge. The player specifically said they were scanning the bridge for a lookout. I gave the goblin Advantage on his Stealth since he had the ability to set up a hiding spot well ahead of time and gave the elf Disadvantage on the Perception due to lighting issues. The elf managed to hit the DC. He decided to take a shot at it with his short bow despite me informing the goblin had exceptional cover, practically just popping out his head on occasion (3/4 cover). He made the shot and the damage plus sneak attack dropped the goblin. From that point they blitzed the pool encounter and surprised the bugbear, ganging up on him and dropping him in the third round (the first was a surprise round, so he only got in one round of attacks before dropping). I'm guessing things would have been different if the bridge-goblin shot had missed or not dropped it.
      The other group got spotted, double-flooded and TPC'ed (total party capture) early. I gave them a chance to escape being tied up in room 6 with Sildar, and they managed to convince the goblin to free them in return for taking down Klarg. A little mercy for a tough dungeon seemed in order for newer players, and I wanted to run a game where it wasn't always kill-or-be-killed, so it taught them a lesson that failing a fight didn't mean the end.
      So, yeah, it's very tough, but it can be done, and not just on a rare occasion. And because of the politics caused by the involvement of the Black Spider, it's easy to justify the goblins taking poisoners if things don't work out. If a character does flat-out die, I would just allow their replacement PC to be a prisoner in area 6 along with Sildar. If you want to run a more brutal goblin gang that wants the party in the stew-pot more than they want them in custody, I'd recommend starting at level 2 and adding a few goblins (one to each of the second-in-commands room, the pool and the boss's room).
