@@starscreamofvos I am sure you will be happy to know that from 2015 , in India , our pmo took decision not to kill dog when they retire or unable to perform their task , they simply are sent to the old age home for dogs present in up State of India , you can google it . There they are served and taken care like a retired officer with full respect , or one in hundred cases , they give an army or police dog to high rank army officer ..
They can't be sent to ngo , atfirst due to security reasons and seconds no ngo can maintain the diet or exercise given to dogs while they are in camps ..
They are given proper respect when a dog is martyred ..
So , since 2015 , no dog has been killed just because he is old or ill or injured , we indians treat them like our comarades , as they belong to same motherland and helps to protect our home ..

We had a full time drug dog at our high school named Jake. He failed police academy so they sent him to work at a school. He was a goofball but his nose still worked. We all loved him!

Drug dogs are dogs that are specifically trained to sniff out drugs so the police can get them.
Yes, they are sometimes brought to school if it is suspected that a member of staff or student (in the case of it being high school/college students) has drugs stashed somewhere in the school.
@@heh2393 yes, a drug dog sniffs out illegal substances such as Marijuana or cocaine. They can also sniff for bombs and other weapons. Unless you're in a bad area, they should only be finding recreational drugs. They have them at high schools because that's when kids usually start using drugs and bringing them to school. A deputy is paired with the dog so if anything is found, legal action is taken. I can't speak for other countries or states but that was in a public school in Texas, USA.

I remember a few years back when 5 minutes into my niece's peewee soccer game, both teams started running towards a playground nearby. All the parents laughed it off, but it took about 15 minutes to herd the little warriors back. Some were crying and not wanting to play soccer anymore. Oh well.

We just gave my German Shepherd named Jag to the K9 Police in VirginiaBeach 😭💔. My grandmas K9 was a famous dog in Virginia, so we trust the K9 with our dogs

Breed doesn't exist. It's a fabricated construct created by breeders to sell a product. Thankfully, more and more people are realizing this scam that kills 8,000 dogs DAILY in the USA (and more globally) and getting rescues instead. In the USA, many police departments are just adopting pitbulls, labs, and other larger dogs and training them. One department even has a King Charles Cavalier as a drug sniffing dog. Not to mention rescues are far healthier than what comes from greeders.

Breed *is* a real thing, not a social construct. It's similar to saying that culture isn't an actual thing. It is, and you know it.
You're right, dog breeds who do service work aren't limited to german shepherds or 'normal' breeds for service work. Any breed of dog can be a good service k9, it all depends on the temperament.
That being said, there is a lot that goes into temperament. And it has to do with instincts.
If breed didn't exist, I could go out and get a husky mix from the shelter and it wouldn't want to eat my cats. If i did that, one of my cats would end up dead.
australian shepherds like to herd, it's what they were bred to do. Their breed exists.
beagles like to sniff and hunt, it's what they were bred to do. Their breed exists.
Siberian huskies like to pull, it's what they were bred to do. Their breed exists.
German shepherds tend to be in-tune with their handler's emotions making them bad for anxiety psychiatric-service dog work. Their breed exists.
Labrador retrievers like to retrieve and swim, it's what they were bred to do, hence their name. Their breed exists.
Golden retrievers like to people-please and retrieve, it's what they were bred to do, making them one of the best options for service dog work. Their breeds exists.
Pomeranians bark a lot because it's in their breed to be alert, watchful dogs. Their breed exists.
If you can get a dog with a perfect temperament from a shelter, PLEASE DO. those dogs deserve homes. In the end though, if you much rather have a dog which has a higher chance at being good at service work, this is no fault to you. Service dogs are incredibly intelligent, well-trained dogs that are supposed to handle every situation calmly and ENJOY it too. you can't force a dog to do what it doesn't want to do when it comes to working. Service dogs are incredibly expensive, and it takes a lot to train them. You can't just go to a shelter and find a perfect dog with a perfect temperament. If you can, then that's amazing. Cheap, and you're repurposing a dog. Otherwise?
Adopt and shop responsibly. With my condition I can't take care of a rowdy shelter dog who needs my attention and needs my care and needs super-training. I'd much rather go with a puppy who i can set easy boundaries with. You can't get that with an old dog who has habits set in stone.
And in the end, even if you don't have a good reason for buying a designer breed, you still shouldn't be forced to adopt a dog. It's your choice, as long as you're doing it responsibly and not supporting puppy mills and backyard breeders, i have no problem with you. No one should get to tell you that you only have one choice.
