This is the second video I seen, Amber from This Southern girl can... After seeing both videos I would not buy this yarn I don't have the patience for this yarn.. just saying
I agree because I usually like going with the flow as much as possible. Besides, it's the most frugal way to manage it. Or if we really want the traditional look we can still cut and weave in the yarn ends to achieve that goal. But the great thing about this particular product is that it should eliminate having to juggle more than one skein at a time, and having to think about which color do I need to grab next. I expect it would also work well enough for alternative, more linear stitch patterns.
This yarn has exposed so much about how different everyone crochets. Ive seen people get it to work up perfectly without much stress and others get it all wonky even with a high skill level. Its gorgeous color ways!
Yeah, I think that if you happen to crochet exactly how the designers expect, then it’s a fine product, but if you’re even a little bit off it ends up being very stressful
I would find this yarn so stressful to work with for a granny square - I was feeling stressed out just watching the video haha. I would need to use it for a different type of project...or just not use it at all. Great idea, but I don't think it's really practical for most people.
Yeah totally because I don’t like doing chains between and I only do one in corners, I also refer to turn my work because I like the way it looks I think it’d be a nightmare working with this yarn but it’s a great idea because I hate switching colors
I think it's great that red heart is experimenting with different pooling yarns like this. Folks on a tight budget deserve to have fun variety too. Also--love those holo nails! Your nails are always gorgeous.
I think those who really love making granny squares for specific projects will like this once they figure out what works for them to make the colors fall in place. I like making granny squares as well, but if I ever get my hands on this yarn, it won't be for the purpose it was manufactured for. I've recently discovered the joy of crocheting granny rectangle blankets, and want to see how the colors in this yarn pool up in that pattern when making one giant piece. Also how it appears in other stitches and patterns will be fun to discover. I think it will be fun, and can't wait to get my hands on some.
Following a spinal cord injury, breast cancer, chemo, radiation, massive MRSA infection and adverse drug reactions, I found that neuropathy, chemo brain, etc made it impossible to hold my knitting needles or even understand patterns (have been knitting since 5y.o.). The crochet hook and patterns were almost as bad, but I remembered a square "granny square" baby blanket I had made years before, but wanted to make one a rectangular shape. Of course I found EASY online instruction and have since made several of them in varying sizes. They showcase unique yarns so beautifully. Please share your work if you so choose to make a granny out of this yarn; I'd love to see it!❤
I've made 22 squares so far. I can now look at the length of yarn before a color change and know if I need to switch up the tension for the final row. It definitely gets better. ❤
I really like the idea of not having to manage a bunch of different colored yarns, attaching them and weaving the ends. It is refreshing to see big yarn manufacturers try something different though
Could be super interesting if you used two different color ways starting from different ends, either held together or alternating every row or every two rows.
Ok so, I actually love this yarn! Once I made a couple of squares I got used to the tension I needed, and the squares are small enough that redoing a row or part of a row wasn’t too big of a deal. I did manage to get 14 squares out of a ball, and I love that the colors are already chosen for me! I struggle with making decisions (and I also really REALLY hate weaving in ends)
I think it's a cool idea and brilliant for people on a budget who don't want to use multiple skeins just to make multicoloured granny squares. I'm fortunate that I can fund my crippling yarn addiction and will stick with using separate colours, it'd be more stressful to worry about my tension on top of it. But I'm glad this yarn exists anyway, it does have its benefits!
The first one is the fiddlyest one. After you get it down it’s smooth sailing. For me, much easier than managing five balls of yarn and lots of ends. My biggest complaint is that it’s super saver. I wish it was a nicer acrylic or even wool blend.
@@crowdedcar They did a similar one some years ago called planned pooling and never expanded so I’m not holding my breath. I don’t see myself buying more than what I already have but I think I’ll enjoy the cardigan I plan to make out of it.
I’ve been wanting to try this yarn, I don’t mind frogging abd redoing because that will perfect my skills with that yarn. I want to make a bag for my wheelchair with it. I love all the colors ❤
If you have the patience to crochet or knit, I don't see why this yarn would need a greater effort, as it's a smooth one, or should that be even? I haven't the patience for uneven ones, such as eyelash. It's quite hard to see if you drop any stitches with them, and also the same when it comes to picking them up.
@@GillianBergh The patience comes from needing to re-do every row to get the perfect tension. You can see in the video that some colors needed looser tension and some needed tighter tension, otherwise the colors don't work up right-- this is frustrating to work with.
I’m so happy about your review! I’ve seen so many people rave about it but since I’m a baby crocheter there’s something about it that bugged me when they’d talk through the process. And you put it into perfect words. It’s like the strictness of being unable to change any of the colors orders or possibility of experimenting. That’s my favorite thing about crochet so thank you for saving me the money! I was really tempted since they were on sale❤
One of my favorite parts of granny squares is carefully choosing my color placement, this totally removes that step. This yarn takes away color placement and pattern choice which fun, flexible, creative aspects of fiber art that I love!
I got two skeins of those purely because I thought the colors were fun. Didn’t even realize it was for granny squares when I picked it up. Then my mom pointed it out. I got the Black - Carnation. I normally work in the cool tones and most often blues/purples. So I was trying something different. Long story short I was trying to trick my grandma into picking a yarn she liked the color of so I could make her a Celtic scarf for Christmas, plus a matching hat. (Hence the second skein, Which I still have enough of for 3 to 4 more hats) I’ll tell you now, it looked WILD!
now that i have seen several other crocheters try other square designs i am on board for sure. the basic 3DC cluster granny isnt my fave but others are doing sunburts and flowers and african violet hexies- also another designer used her tapestry native american blanket pattern with it. it has sparked alot of creativity even though its a challenge. i think you should get out your tunisian hook and give it the TL spin
I love that Red Heart tried something new and different. I've played with this yarn and, like you, I don't chain in between my clusters, I always do a magic circle, and I only chain 2 on the corners. Due to this I went up to a 6 hook and it worked out for me. Everyone crochets differently so yeah, if you have time and patience you can play with it and figure out what works for you. I agree its not for beginners!
I will be honest, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS YARN!!!! I know, I am crazy fir saying this. First, I use an H/8 5mm hook. Second, because my tension varies, I created a work around for the squares I am making, so my color changes take place, even with extra length of the color. I am enjoying, working with this yarn. I do what is working for me. I just wish I was able to get the Lily Pad colorway, but it was sold out.
The minute i saw this i knew not to waste my time on it. I already have tension issues and this would definitely be a headache. Combine that with the fact that everyone likes to pick their own colors and granny square style, and this was a no-go from the start!! Thank you Toni for proving it in case i doubted myself.
I'm so glad to see this review! The thought of not weaving in ends is great, but I couldn't deal with the anxiety for every round of every granny square, and I already know that tension would be my biggest challenge! My tension varies so much when I put a project down for any reason and come back to it later. I would be so frustrated with having to frog and re-do rows. Thanks for checking it out, and happy crocheting!
For someone like me who doesn't do granny square or projects that require multiple color changes because I HATE weaving in ends. This would actually work for me. It would be worth having some colors off a little to not have ends to weave in. But I'm also not making anything to sell it's usually just for me, so if it's not perfect, it doesn't bother me. I also like the idea of not having multiple skeins of yarn in different colors to work with and leftover yarn in all those colors.
I'm not a person who crochets granny squares, and I wasn't surprised by the outcome of this video. With that said, this product reminds of the Caron yarn cakes and their self-striping yarn. I've made a couple of shawls with them- fun to not weave in ends, and the striping happens randomly within the row. 🤷🏼♀️
I personally love this new yarn! I have seen a lot of others struggle with it but I made it work and ended up making an 8 square balaclava for these cold Midwestern winters that has been so great! I look forward to making a granny square tote as well! Thank you for your honest review! Love your videos!
Yarn chicken! I love it! Perfect description. I've been told that I have very even tension and stitches, but I know that I would still feel like I was playing yarn chicken the entire time. Thank you for an honest review. If I were gifted some of this, or found it on the dollar table, I might make it into scarves and hats, and use the leftovers on a scrapy afghan. I'm not crazy about any of the colorways you showed us, but they might find nice homes with some charities. If I had a lot of it, I might try a child's sweater to see how that would work, but I'm thinking scarves and hats would be a better size for this color-change.
This yarn would drive me crazy. I don’t have the patience to use it for granny squares but I like the colors they offer so if I thought it might make a pretty blanket or something I might use it but definitely not for what it’s intended for.
I am so looking forward to hearing about your experience with this! I struggled with keeping consistent tension making picture perfect granny squares with this, and I just didn’t think it was worth the time of having to unravel repeatedly to get colors lined up. I really don’t mind weaving in ends, but I thought this was a cute idea.
Not exactly the same - but I did a planned pooling throw with just normal variegated yarn, and I decided I won't do it again. So much frogging and redoing - I feel like I could have made 2 or 3 throws in that time, lol.
I’m so happy you made this video. I tried this yarn because I saw so many people saying how amazing this yarn is but I struggled bad with it. My rows were always too tight or loose it never was right. With adjusting tension and hook size and everything it makes it seem like the same amount of work as just using other colors. I’m happy for the people that like it but it’s not for me!
Before the video started. I already knew how this would go (including that no one can return items and NOT buy yarn at Joanna's, it's too tempting). Everyone crochets differently from tension to speed to using a different hook material, all things thet would effect results. So while i guess this video proves its possible to do what the yarn claims you can do, the conclusion is obviously unless youre the person who tested the yarn before it was marketed to the public, you very likely are going to get different results. I dont mind acrylic yarn (it was hilarious to see Tony basically roll her eyes at it because she didnt want to diss it too much 😂) i just don't think constantly fighting to have the colors match is worth it. Crochet is supposed to be fun/relaxing, having to frog every row and redo it til it matches is the fastest way to either make me throw out a yarn or abandon my previous pattern. Its a cool idea to not have to weave in any ends, but for me personally if i wanted a specific color on each row i also want thr ability to change it around if i feel necessary. All that being said, i would consider this yarn if it was on sale. I LOVE colorful granny squares and I love the colors changing in there own because i personally prefer multiple colors per row. I think it would look neat. So while it's cool that its technically possible to make a granny square using one color per yarn, thats not how i make mine anyway ❤😂. So for me its a 6/10. It would be 8 but -2 points for that ridiculous price. This is acrylic yarn and from my experience red heart doesnt seem to one the "premium acrylic" end but they sure like to charge like it 😒. Ive knitted/crocheted with better acrylic yarn for half the price of red hearts.
Yeah, I'm not at all a fan of acrylic (which is not to say I don't use it, I do...) but I avoid Red Heart. There are a lot of acrylic yarns on the market of vastly better quality and at comparable price points.
This yarn is actually perfect for people learning color pooling. The granny squares are small enough that re doing the rounds a few times while you learn the colorway isn't nearly as painful as having to frog an entire row of a wave stitch blanket 😂 I think a workaround might be to keep your tension a TINY bit tight and then do an extra DC or slip stitch at the end of the round with any extra yarn. I can see someone figuring out a color pooled mitered square with this yarn. Color pooling is hellish at first but it's one of those things that only gets better with time. You learn how to figure out each yarns colorway and adjust your tension with each color accordingly. Overall I'd rather just pick out all my own colors for granny squares
Your experience is what I figured would happen if I tried that. I honestly don't mind juggling the colors and weaving ends, as much as I mind not choosing your own color palette and the constant frogging that I would probably be doing.
Thanks for the honest review on this yarn. I was going to attempt it for myself but can see where I would have issues. I however would get this yarn for when I crochet borders on fleece material.
Thanks for taking one for the team, Toni! I would far rather have the flexibility of different granny square designs, not having to worry about my tension and sewing in ends here, and there. Being worried all the time, and having to undo and undo isn’t my idea of a pleasant afternoon!
I can’t wait to hear Toni’s take. I bought some to make a granny square cardi and tested out making one square yesterday. It came out pretty good and I’m pretty excited about two ends per square. HOWEVER only being able to make one style of square makes it probably a one and done for me.
Your example was exactly what I expected to happen if I tried to use it. Like you said, I'd be stressing the whole time, feeling like I was playing yarn chicken every round. Thanks for doing this, Toni - you saved me some money.
Once you get the hang of it works well. I like it. I am using the cyber black. There is a very good tutorial for this yarn that was made by one of the testers. It has a lot of tips and tricks for using it. I assume you could work a magic ring by adjusting your starting length. I am thinking about making a granny coat with my squares.
I was worried after so many people haven’t liked it but I like that even if something doesn’t work for you, you explain the pros and cons and how it might work for someone else. I love the look of granny squares but I’ve never been able to make a full project with them for a few different reasons. For me I struggle picking colors that look nice together so having a set color scheme is wonderful for me. I also hate weaving in ends to the point that I wont even finish a project if it has too many ends so fiddling around with the tension and switching hooks might be worth it to me. I would rather redo a row multiple times than weave in multiple ends per square.
Based on your comment early in the video, I'm going to call this "Yarn chicken yarn" from now on :D I won't be buying it and will never work with it, so thanks for taking one for the team :) Your videos are a delight. I've been consuming some pretty heavy stuff content-wise tonight and your pretty face and lighthearted tone are such a relief, it's like coming home to a happy place.
I’m looking forward to this because I have watched a few reviews struggle already. I’m not a granny square fan, I like the stitch, but I’m a child of the late 60’s & 70’s. I’m over the square, but I do like yarns like this. Maybe another company will come out with one.
PassioKnit Kelsey played with tension and hook size to do hers with a magic circle start and no chain 1’s in between (like most of us, this is how we roll) and she was able to make it work, but she does like acrylic yarn. Just putting this out there because it isn’t r me either.
Thank you for making this video!! This is the nail in the coffin for me, I was so excited about this yarn, but I am so glad I can save the money for yarn I love more!
I LOVE IT! I really don't love weaving in ends and I don't want to have to buy and carry several skeins of yarn. I love the colors! I do wish the yarn was softer. Found I have to use several different hooks and Mikey from Crochet Crowd has some tips to help!
My recent crochet block is 29 inch vintage rose flower granny square and takes four to create a smal lapghan in a hurry just use shell stitch to complete. Grammas love this one two.
I had a feeling that this yarn was going to have more issues than I would be willing to try. I agree that even though its a nice concept I would get frustrated of having to frog sections all the time making it difficult to complete a project. I'm with you at not having this in my stash.
I love random color changes in my work so I use it for any project no matter the stitch, I think it would look really interesting in a corner to corner blanket
I'm new to your channel and crocheting.THIS made me giggle because I have watched so many of your videos and you are an amazing crocheter. Watching you undo the rounds multiple times was EXACTLY what I needed after struggling a couple days ago. Thank you for sharing your talent!
As soon as I got this granny square yarn in I thought it looked like a big ball of frustration 😂 Your description as a skien full of yarn chicken is spot on! I've made an asymmetrical shawl, a fanned hat, and a diamond shawl with Moody Cherry! Saving the Hyper Violet for a sweater. No granny squares attempted ❤
Omg yesssss🎉🎉🎉! I’m looking forward to this video because it’s going to be amazing!!! Side note…I really enjoyed this stuff. And I bought A LOT. Kinda on the gimmicky side I suppose but I’m super into it!
Hi Toni!! Hello Everyone! I too bought the Granny All in One yarn. I am missing a couple colors. I had no plans to make any granny squares LOL! I I love granny squares. I have made several of Juan's Backgammon scarf with a matching beanie. I saw a lady in one of my crochet groups use it to make a simple double crochet afghan. Made a beautiful abstract design. So I copied her and I am making 3 of them. Only I am doing double crochet back loop only for a little texture. One is with Citrus Twist, one with Black Dove and Shadow - I'm alternating the skeins, when one run out I add the next. The 3rd one is Black Moody Cherry. I love the colors!! Have a great evening!! I love your reviews!!
Yesss!!! I have been so excited to hear Toni’s opinion of this yarn. I’m not sure I believe in it for anyone but beginners (as a learning tool?)… but I know Toni will have a nuanced and thought-out review :)
Love your videos! And love love this granny square yarn. Found the secret: first, ditch instructions on the back of label. Use a 6.0 (J) crochet hook, chain only two in the corners (instead of three), and leave out the chain one between clusters. This way you will always have yarn of each color left over at the end of your round. Then instead of stressing, simply slip stitch along top until you get to the next start of a cluster where your new color lines up. Works every time without fail and you can't tell. The key is to be flexible and this yarn will make beautiful granny squares for everyone!
I appreciate that you tried this. I felt that it was too good to be true and while I am happy to know it worked for some people, it does detract from some of the creativity of crafters. I had wondered about how many colorways they had, and I think I'd like more of a variety. Though I admit I do like color changing yarn because then I have less to weave in. I use mandala yarn at the moment for a blanket that I am making for my son and yes, I have cut the yarn a few times. But other than that, I just use a color until I have to change it. So, if I were to replicate the technique with the same yarn, there's no guarantee it would look exactly the same as the first one I made. Which I like. But that also depends on how the yarn is prepared for sale. You know what would be interesting to use this yarn with considering how the color changes are already done? Freeform crochet. I haven't done it before but have seen some rather interesting creations from others using that technique.
I was curious as to what you had to say about this yarn when it came out and I am so glad that you didn't disapoint by reviewing it. YAY! This yarn reminds me of the planned pooling yarns that were so popular a few years ago. My tension is not average and I usually have to adjust many things to make gauge and I know how frustrating that can be to myself who is an experienced crocheter of many years so I agree that this yarn is not for beginners as it could set them up for failure to craft launch. There are several people who I know personally who attempted to learn crochet with the planned pooling yarn to get a buffalo plaid blanket as it was single crochet and how hard could it be (their words not mine) and when they couldn't do it got frustrated and donated all of the yarn to me for my classes and samples. Thanks again for your honest reviews!
im uk based so cant get this yarn (right now at least, hopefully in the future!!!) but the trial and error aspect of this yarn is so much more appealing to me than doing a standard granny square with different colours.. i hate weaving in ends and ive seen many videos now that use different techniques successfully so i think its a lot of frogging until you 'figure out' how the yarn works for you
My observations after watching 5 TH-cam reviews of this yarn: If you experts can’t get the colors to come out perfect (and nobody can), what is the hope for us?! The time it takes to keep ripping out the rows, just get regular yarn and hide your ends. And lastly, you do realize that since you used some of the purple that was needed for the next square, the next square will be really messed up. You are so kind in your opinion, so I’m going to rip off the band aid for you. Used for its purpose, this yarn sucks! 😂 I love you and your channel.
Agreed! I watched videos from people who beta tested and helped the brand bring it out and they're also frogging and switching hook sizes. I already give up and throw my crochet in the closet when I mess up, I don't need the added stress 😂😂😂
I decided to try this yarn and I am using it as a learning game for tension and exploring small changes to see if I can get it to work. I am staying with the recommended hook size, but am adjusting from 3 to 2 in the corners for the last two rounds. This seems to support hitting my colors right. I also notice that I stitch differently from day to day. One day I hit the color transitions perfectly another day, I threw the yarn down and walked away after the I don't know how many times I frogged. Not a project for a sit down in front of the TV and mindlessly crochet.
I avoid red heart simply because I don’t do well with acrylic. Acrylic seems to irritate my skin and I have to limit the amount of time I work with it. I have a ton of it I bought at garage sales and it’s pretty enough, I just can’t work with it very long without my hands breaking out.
Have you ever tried I Love this Yarn from Hobby Lobby? It’s my all time favorite, and it’s soft, and it’s amazing! Yes, it is acrylic, but it’s not has rough as Red Heart Super Savers. I highly recommend it ☺️
Believe me, folks, when I tell you, I have tried all acrylic yarns, and I just have to be careful when using any kind of acrylic. It does not work well with my skin. I can work with any other kind of yarn, cotton, alpaca, merino wool, you name it with no problem at all.
Thank you very much for such a detailed & easy-to-follow-along video! I'm extremely new to the crochet & knitting world (have been admiring for years) & I haven't even purchased anything to start yet. Am just watching videos for inspo & direction; now this one is definitely catalogued. You have a wonderfully clear & direct speaking voice, a great personality, & the way you presented everything was concise & well-informed. I liked the demos, especially the explanations of why something did or didn't work, & why you would or wouldn't use it. Have just subscribed. Happy crafting!
No one really seems to understand how difficult it would be to produce a yarn like this. The fact that they even tried and it's mostly successful is a feat. I'm shocked at the snooty reviews I've seen of this yarn.
I'm not, to be honest. The fact that this was probably difficult to produce says nothing about its practical utility for most crocheters. Are these reviews you mention actually being "snooty" or do they actually have valid points? Aside from that, I wouldn't want to think that someone had an obligation to give a positive review for factors that, like it or not, are irrelevant to the user experience.
i agree with everything you said! i’m working with the same color way you used and for me, i just know my tension is so tight that i can’t be bothered to frog every row. i’ve made peace with it and honestly i don’t mind sewing in ends so for me, it’s nice that the color palette is picked out and all the colors are weighed out and i can just cut the yarn at each color change
Thanks for trying it for us Toni! I'd been contemplating how I'd use this if I got any, and honestly it probably wouldn't be granny squares. I'd rather just weave in ends than try to manage the tension to that extent. This looks like it'd be fun to just use in a hat, scarf, crocodile scale project, or a sweater- something you're not trying to plan the color orientation for. The colors they used are mostly okay too.
Agree with your review 100%! As an experienced crocheter/knitter, I also found that I had to adjust as I went, and for beginners, this is a non-starter. That being said, I understand why Red Heart/Yarnspirations gave this a try. I would agree with your 5/10 crochet hooks evaluation but I would add that the IDEA and INTENTION behind it was a solid 8 or 9 out of 10. I don't want to discourage innovative thinking - thanks for the review (and validation!) and thanks to Yarnspirations for trying a new idea!!
Love that you did a review on this yarn! I was curious because I get so worried about color changes and weaving in ends. That being said… I was more mesmerized by your super cute holographic w/black accent nails than the actual yarn! Thanks for the honest review and love the nails, girl! 💁🏻♀️
Thank you so much for this vid! As a crochet beginner using nylon cord, I kept seeing the super saver brand recommended, and I’d planned to get this granny square (the cyber one haha) as a fun project to test my skills. You’re right, I would have thought I just sucked at crochet vs. tension, and given up on the hobby. Thank you so, so much!!
I Watched your video and I agree on all the con's you mentioned. I don't want someone conditioning my creativity. Once again you saved me money on trying them. I learned with red heart too, but it is not my go to yarn!!! Thank you again!! I love your videos!!!
I appreciate this review so much! I was at Joann’s just yesterday for yarn and I debated getting one of these. Fortunately I’m working on a couple different projects and decided to hold off. Glad I saw this review. Thanks so much! I love your channel!
I’ve watched several videos on this, bought one skein today just to try it. I dropped my hook size down to a 5.0 instead of 5.5 and made a huge difference! But I guess all crocheters are different. I did enjoy making the granny squares with this yarn. But it does take a little bit of adjustment.
I just did my first granny square. Ended up using a J hook but then used I hook for final round to tighten it up some. If I had some yarn of a color left I slipped stitched over to next ch space or so. I have done a circle and then a hexagon with I hook and did well with it. I HATE WEAVING IN ENDS AND THIS WORKED WELL. i do like the colorways also.
I am a super beginner and I really like this yarn so far! I mostly made amigurumi before, and granny squares were intimidating, so getting this yarn made it easy to learn new techniques and stitches. I have use a larger hook and adjust my tension a bit, but once you do one you get the hang of it.
Your the third lady I've watched... the last lady worked the whole skein of yarn. She said by the time she got to granny square #7... she got the tension. She worked a couple of more colors and had no problems. ❤. We all need more patience. ❤ love the way you teach us and show us new things.❤😊 I want to make a purse. My granddaughter loves the grays. 😊
Thank you for reviewing that yarn for us. I would probably use it for a throw or a blanket where it wouldn’t matter where the colors stop and start. I’m really happy to know about this yarn before I went and bought a bunch. I appreciate your help.
there was definitely a learning curve for using this yarn but i am on my 3rd skein to make a blanket for a family member. i also look forward to making a vest and tote bag as gifts for others. since i am really in a groove now i think it is worth it for people who hate weaving in ends in each row.
I appreciate the tab tails and the fact that they do offer many colours for a square, I want to make a long sweater coat for me . Your skill share is very innovative. Thanks for sharing your work and your creativity.
I get if you run out of the color early how it would be frustrating. But can you slip stitch away the yarn if there is too much left before going to the next round? I’ll experiment myself when I pick up this yarn. Great comments and thanks for sharing your thoughts in this great video!
I so love your tutorials. 1:45 I like some of those color combos but I'm too uptight about small details to deal with constant yarn chicken. I wonder what it would look like doing row crochet. Hmn. I might try it just to see.
I think if I get this yarn, I'm going to probably use it in my knitting machine for toques/beanies. You are such a gem and I absolutely love you! Thank you for your unbiased reviews ❤
I tried this yarn, watched ALOT of reviews! I will not be using this yarn, too much trouble to get the gauge. I will be returning the rest of the yarn also. Crocheting should be enjoyable, not stressful ! Thanks for your honest review!
I love that you reviewed this. I am going to look for a video of yours making granny squares the way you do with regular yarn. I think I'd find this yarn stressful.
Toni, thanks for reviewing this. You are an experienced crocheter, so to loosen tension in one round and then tighten in the next, it's obviously not you. This reminds me of the yarn that was created for pooling plaid scarves. I have done a couple, and while I LOVE the end product, I found the process quite fussy.
Hi Toni, I'm thankful for your review. I agree with you, that it would cause more trouble, than it's worth going through trying line the colors up. I would probably buy it and use it just to make one giant granny square blanket and let the colors fall where they fall, like the regular multicolored yarn.
As someone who's always been intimidated by Granny Squares, I love this! I learned how to crochet when I was about 9, but I picked it back up during quarantine in 2020. I know basic stitches, but trying newer things has always put me off because stitches & projects tend to look way more complicated than they are. But this is a great way to practice tension as well! I absolutely love Red Heart yarns.
I purchased this yarn but I do not plan to use it making granny squares. If I was to make a granny square it would be a large blanket using one of these yarn skeins and a solid yarn color or two to match the yarn colors of the granny yarn skein. You alternating. And yes it was also at the front of the store. Joann is getting all of us.
Thanks for reviewing this yarn. I was skeptical about it when I saw it but also thought what a great idea. Yes definitely felt like yarn chicken for each row and what a pain to have to keep adjusting your tension for each round. I like the colour options and it seemed like a fun idea.
I’m using the white shadow right now to learn to crochet granny squares. I’m glad I bought a big ball of cream that matches, because I always run out of the last colour. I bought eleven balls because I had no idea how many I needed. I’ve been getting 15 squares per ball and I’m using 4.5 mm. I gave 50some done and can’t wait to be finished of this project lol. I’m over these squares.
I say...DONT control your tension and make a tie dye themed granny blanket! 😍 let the colors fall where they may!
Yeah this looks like a "it is what it is" kind of Granny blanket
This is the second video I seen, Amber from This Southern girl can... After seeing both videos I would not buy this yarn I don't have the patience for this yarn.. just saying
I like the way you think!!! Just let it be
I agree because I usually like going with the flow as much as possible.
Then there is no sense in spending extra money buy this type of yarn.
Crocheting is a stress-reliever for me. I would need a drink if I used that yarn!
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
I hate it too.
😆😆😆
Now THERE is an idea!
❤❤
I would find this yarn so stressful to work with for a granny square - I was feeling stressed out just watching the video haha. I would need to use it for a different type of project...or just not use it at all.
Great idea, but I don't think it's really practical for most people.
Yeah totally because I don’t like doing chains between and I only do one in corners, I also refer to turn my work because I like the way it looks I think it’d be a nightmare working with this yarn but it’s a great idea because I hate switching colors
I never got pooling…
Please share your work if you so choose to make a granny out of this yarn; I'd love to see it!❤
This is exactly how I feel!!
I saw where someone had made a beanie out of this yarn, and it created stripes of various widths!
@@aksez2u That was Ross at the smellslikeyarn channel. That beanie turned out nice looking for some super saver yarn.
Perfect use of this yarn
I've made 22 squares so far. I can now look at the length of yarn before a color change and know if I need to switch up the tension for the final row. It definitely gets better. ❤
Yes! Def seems like you'll get the hang of it after a while, especially if you hate cutting & weaving in ends (like me)
@chadsteele2240 same!!
@@elizabethadams3744 that's awesome! Which color did you grab? I'm currently working with black-hyper violet
Eeeeexactly this is what I would think ❤
The first three were a bit of a chore but then I got in a rhythm and was good to go. I used an H hook 5 and got 15 squares from my skein.
I really like the idea of not having to manage a bunch of different colored yarns, attaching them and weaving the ends. It is refreshing to see big yarn manufacturers try something different though
as a knitter I wanna see how this yarn looks on different projects like the scrap yarn beanie
Someone in this group I'm in on Facebook made a beanie and it came out striped 😍
I bought some of this to use on beanies, and it looked great with the beanie pattern I used !
Could be super interesting if you used two different color ways starting from different ends, either held together or alternating every row or every two rows.
@@unashamedaccompanistwhich pattern did you use please?
I tried it with several@@Ladiesdontstartfights - just pick your fave beanie pattern :)
Did it ever become consistent, like you were able to anticipate that a certain color would require you to change your tension before you stitched it?
I wonder if this is their test launch. Like eventually they’ll start making granny square skeins in other blends
@@crowdedcar They did a similar one some years ago called planned pooling and never expanded so I’m not holding my breath. I don’t see myself buying more than what I already have but I think I’ll enjoy the cardigan I plan to make out of it.
I wouldn't bet on that unless for some reason _this_ were to become unexpectedly popular. But I personally don't expect that to happen. @@crowdedcar
❤❤
Thank you for the review. I was curious about this yarn and now I think it's not for me. I don't want to think that hard, I crochet to relax 😊
I LOVE the bead curtain obscuring the yarn. It’s so clever!
I’ve been wanting to try this yarn, I don’t mind frogging abd redoing because that will perfect my skills with that yarn. I want to make a bag for my wheelchair with it. I love all the colors ❤
This works like yarn pooling. I’m not sure I would have the patience. Thank you for the video .
I am 30 squares into a project with this yarn and I love it. I adjust as I go and have not issues making it work for my crochet style.
This yarn takes away color placement and pattern choice which fun, flexible, creative aspects of fiber art that I love!
you articulated my feelings perfectly.
(Hence the second skein,
Which I still have enough of for 3 to 4 more hats) I’ll tell you now, it looked WILD!
I did the exact same thing....bought it because of the colors. I didn't know it was for grannys. LoL but now I'll have to deal with it. 😂
That’s what I’ve always done for yarns like this, I see the suggested pattern on the front but I’m just gonna fly by the seat of my pants 😂
now that i have seen several other crocheters try other square designs i am on board for sure. the basic 3DC cluster granny isnt my fave but others are doing sunburts and flowers and african violet hexies- also another designer used her tapestry native american blanket pattern with it. it has sparked alot of creativity even though its a challenge. i think you should get out your tunisian hook and give it the TL spin
Good to know! Down the rabbit hole now...
Oh my, Red Heart and a metal Susan Bates is how I learned to crochet decades ago. Thanks for the TRIP down memory lane with my mom. ❤😊
I am just rolling with it. I notice everyone is making them perfect or trying to, but it actually looks pretty cool
This could never be me. My patience isn’t this long. Good on you for trying it out for the rest of us!
I had to change hook sizes three times and then I had to adjust my tension. It just wasn’t worth it to me.
I easily avoid paying for yarn at Joanns... no thanks. Agree with you on the rest!
This yarn is actually perfect for people learning color pooling. The granny squares are small enough that re doing the rounds a few times while you learn the colorway isn't nearly as painful as having to frog an entire row of a wave stitch blanket 😂
I think a workaround might be to keep your tension a TINY bit tight and then do an extra DC or slip stitch at the end of the round with any extra yarn.
I watched, I learned, and I know I wouldn’t have the patience to complete a granny square with the fixed colors. Thank you for doing the review.
Yes Toni, thanks for the review. I love your reviews as I think you bring a very balanced perspective to them and cover a lot of angles on reviews.
I agree 💯
I am thinking about making a granny coat with my squares.
you just confirmed everything I already thought about the yarn, without me buying it, or trying it!
Um. Work over your tails as you go. That's what I do every time. This includes the starting tail. In the end, I only need to work on one tail.
Based on your comment early in the video, I'm going to call this "Yarn chicken yarn" from now on :D
I won't be buying it and will never work with it, so thanks for taking one for the team :) Your videos are a delight.
I don't crochet at all but I LOVE Yarn Snob reviews even for my knitting yarns. I can't help but kind of love how garish the colors are haha
I haven't gone to JoAnn's in 8 months because I know I'll add to my huge yarn collection!
I love random color changes in my work so I use it for any project no matter the stitch, I think it would look really interesting in a corner to corner blanket
Ooo-la-la, yes! I've been thinking c2c with this.
I love crocheting things like that no matter what the yarn is supposed to be used for
I love red heart and the all in one granny is not stressful to use. I think when your used to doing it 1 way trying something new stresses folks.
Oh, and you can use your magic circle instead of chaining 4 at the beginning!!!
Yay Toni! I tested this yarn on my channel as well... it was WAAAY to much like hard work! And I was getting rope burns with that stuff!!! Lol
"That is quite a blue green, that is something else" made me laugh so hard.
I don't need the yarn judging me every round. It's a no for me.
Never a big fan of granny squares but you seem like you'd be a great addition to a crochet party. Love your videos.
im uk based so cant get this yarn (right now at least, hopefully in the future!!!) but the trial and error aspect of this yarn is so much more appealing to me than doing a standard granny square with different colours.. i hate weaving in ends and ive seen many videos now that use different techniques successfully so i think its a lot of frogging until you 'figure out' how the yarn works for you
I think this yarn will work well for very interesting color pooling crochet projects.
I highly recommend it ☺️
Have you tried Lion Brands acrylic yarn?
Believe me, folks, when I tell you, I have tried all acrylic yarns, and I just have to be careful when using any kind of acrylic. It does not work well with my skin. I can work with any other kind of yarn, cotton, alpaca, merino wool, you name it with no problem at all.
I'm the same way. I get rashes working with all acrylic.
Can you wear latex gloves whilst you crochet? Maybe just cut off the fingers and wear those parts. It's worth a try.
Here for Toni’s warm sense of humor on a cold, cold (below zero) day! I have EXACTLY the same inner dialogue at JoAnn’s. 😂
I think this yarn will be great for traveling so you only have to bring one skein and not worry about cutting constantly!
