Dear Toni, I have found that if I put a tag* on the end of my yarn I can find the centre pull much easier, especially if it comes adrift during winding! ** to make a tag get some decorator's masking tape in a bright colour, (I have Frog Tape [green] and a generic one [blue]) and wrap about 2 inches of it round the end of the yarn like a flag. It comes off fairly easily.
For me, I love my electric winder when I need to cake a lot of yarn at once. As a trucker, I have limited space, so I cake the yarn I plan to bring with me when I have home time. My yarn bag holds 20+ skins, and that will take me a while to do by hand, mostly because I can't keep top speed for the whole process. I've spent HOURS just sitting there caking yarn by hand, and not able to do much else. With the electric winder, I can be multitasking a bit more. And that is invaluable when you have such a limited time to get everything else I need to get done in the couple of days at a time that I'm home.
For me, as an arthritis sufferer in my hands and wrists, winding by hand leaves me with a sore hand and arm after winding a skein or two. This makes it hard to crochet afterwards. I’ve kind of been avoiding some of the nicer yarns that come in hanks because of needing to cake them. So, I’m saving for an electric winder. Maybe a birthday gift to myself in April.
Exactly - I’m glad Toni is fast on her own winding yarn, but I have chronic pain, arthritis, tendinitis, you name it my hands don’t work-itis, and a ball winder isn’t convenient, it’s kind of necessary if I’m going to use nicer yarns.🤷🏼♀️
Thank you Miss Thang. I immediately bought the other one and I really do like it. I was hoping that this one would really showcase those upgrades but since they're not there I'll just stick with what I have. I would love to say that I would get your beautiful manual winder but with my MS I can either use the energy to wind or crochet and well we all know where that's going... Love you and your smile and your perky attitude when your hair is all that and a bag of chips.
Even taking the trade-offs against manual winders into account, these electric winders seem like a fantastic option for those with chronic pain and joint issues. Thanks for the new review!
I love the vibes of your videos. They’re just so cozy and make me feel that we’d be great buds if I have the privilege of meeting you in person. Thanks for sharing yourself and your passion for fiber arts with us!
For the center pull issue, it looks like the excess is getting caught up in the later winds. If you leave a MUCH shorter tail, as in tuck all of the tail into those bottom fins, it won't get lost/caught up.
Your hair is amazing. ❤❤❤ Tony, I want to share something with you. I started following you during the pandemics but I was too scared to crochet. But I never stopped watching your videos. Three years ago I moved to Portugal from Brazil and I went back to crochet to make friends and joined a crochet club. It's been 02 month since I genuinely started crocheting again and I feel like you were my best friend 😂😂😂😂 Thank you so much for your content. Your vibes always makes me feel great.
@@kcrawf4326 I have a cheapo and also a Stanwood. I'm good to go. Good luck with your elbow pain. I have tendonitis that will sometimes act up in my wrists so I feel your pain and have to be careful.
If injury is not an issue, making center pulls by hand is the best way to ensure your yarn doesn't have extra tension (more like looped skeen of yarn) on the fiber and also prevents yarn barfs from happening. Why? Because uneven or too tightly wound balls of yarn encourage snags that can turn into the tangled mess we all dread. Plus once you're done winding by hand the yarn ball looks like a cute apple. ❤ These may be good for people with disabilities, but otherwise, take the time and do it by hand. Your project progress will thank you.
Toni, love your videos, long time fan. The centre pull issue has a possible fix. You're winding the yarn on the shaft first and then securing the end on a slit, that's the opposite of what you do with a traditional ball winder. Try putting the end through the slits first and then wind some yarn around the shaft. I'm not surprised the yarn end gets hidden because you're sandwiching it between the yarn you wound around the shaft to start and all of the yarn that gets wound afterward, sucking it up into the centre of the cake. Worth a shot. 🤷
This is such a great tool for those with hand/arm pain and those with disabilities! Personally i make do with my ratty winder because im broke. But if i ever develop issues (with my luck and family history, i will) i am keep this in mind.
Will consider this as a Christmas gift. I have a crank winder and my hand and arms hurt for several days after multiple ball windings. The pain factor is enough to consider it.
I dunno.... I like the simple task of winding manually. It's calming, satisfying, de-stressing for me. Am I a weirdo? I sometimes go hide in my craft room for hours, winding up half used skeins & taking stock of what I have. Yarn therapy. 😂🧶❤
I wonder if you tape a piece of tape at the end of the yarn when you wrap it at the base before starting your winding when it is done you can easily locate the thread.
Thanks Toni for this review. Since I'm not a high volume crocheter, I was happy to see that your manual winder beat the electric one. I was happy to see this as I don't feel that I need an electric winder at this time but know that in the future I may need to switch to one.
So I got an electric yarn winder from Winder Full. It is the most awesome yarn winder I have ever seen because it winds the yarn onto a bobbin not just a cake. I LOVE this soooooooo much!
I've never had much yarn to wind, just left overs from a project. Since I've begun pulling from the outside, I have even less to wind There are an occasional skein that just slumps when you remove the band, and those I do wind. Nice but not worth the expense for me. I enjoyed watching though!!!
i still use an old hand winder from the late '70s or early '80s, made of heavy ugly plastic , the type everyone's grandma seemed to have i am tempted to try one of these, though - the way it starts up again after a snag looks very helpful!
Hey Toni, I stumbled on your channel due to Tunisian Crochet and I love how you teach it. You're consistent, very visual and you always use the same terms and steps on EVERY foundation. For some that might be boring, for me that's professional teaching grade. Thank you so much for that!! I was wondering if you could use the small opening/slit at the bottom of the winding cone to drop the end/start of your yarn. It would keep that end dangling instead of being eaten up during the initial rotation. What I'm not sure is if it would tangle the the mechanism below. Again, many thanks!! Cheers, Gus
Hi Gus! Thanks for your kindness - I considered the same thing and went to try it when filming this video. The winding mechanism is just under those openings, so I was concerned the yarn would get stuck. I didn't try it. But, you could put a small piece of tape on the tail and use that to hold it for a center pull. A little more work, but maybe worth it.
@@TLYarnCrafts Yeah, I was also concerned it would entangle on the winding cogs underneath, but I had to drop the hint. And, indeed, the tape trick isn't that bad. Since the previous version had a slit on top to drop the yarn, and if you're not to opposed to some hacking, I would suggest making a small cut on the base rim of the winding cone, kinda like the ones you have on sewing thread bobbins, and just hook it there. Either with a metal saw and then some really fine sand paper, or using some kind of heated wire or nail. Again, just a suggestion from a fellow maker, and it's quicker than the tape. Cheers, Gus
I definitely like the idea of an electric ball winder. I generally work right from the skein but would love to toss the remnant yarn on a winder so I don't have to ball it up myself.
I just got this a few days ago. I make an x with the yarn above the slit on the shaft base, push the yarn onto the holder and put my tail through that slit. I get an inner pull string everytime 😊hope this helps!
Thank you for doing this because I tend to be one of those that just kind of impulse buy the shiny toys without even accessing if it's actually necessary. I have many regret purchases because of this so I'm trying to change my ways. LOL - I can honestly say, I don't need this in my life. I have a simple hand crank one and I find it therapeutic sometimes to just sit and wind the yarn by hand. I do like how smooth and fast your wooden one looks, but I don't crochet nearly enough to justify that price tag. My only reqret with the simple hand-crank one I have is the size of the cakes. Sometimes one skein can take two or even three cakes but...then they are easier to carry around if I want to take a project on the go so...there's that.
THANK YOU MS. TONI FOR YOUR REVIEW OF THE LATEST YARN WINDER. ACTUALLY I'M STILL ON THE LATEST YARN WINDER FROM LOOPS & THREADS AT MICHAEL'S. ✨️❄️✨️❄️✨️❄️✨️❄️✨️❄️
Definitely asking Santa!❤ Glad I didn’t get the first one, I have some thicker yarn. With arthritis I can’t wind these balls of yarn and I have limited storage, so it will make storing my yarn better. Thank You for sharing and Happy Thanksgiving ❤
hi i love the electric ball winders i have a lot of pain and this helps so much thanks for your great videos I love them , I wish you would make more with your mom, I really enjoy those videos
I grew up watching old movies and Miss Marple and saw all the ladies and sometimes their husbands, manually winding their wool. It was a nice occupation. Almost zen. It seemed to help people think and relax. Also, no clutter to try and find a home for. I have to say, I'm not sold.
I have a hand-crank yarn winder because it was cheaper plus where I usually wind my yarn isn't near an outlet, but I'm thinking of saving up for an electric one for the future since I have family history of arthritis.
I literally had the 1st gen ordered from Amazon and about to be shipped I cancelled it as soon as I saw your TH-cam post! 😂😂😂 Re-ordered the 2nd gen. Like why not?! It’ll be here in 2 days. I’ve been working with sock yarn and the skeins are a nightmare.
I have a MasBro winder and I love it. Tried the one you have but think the MasBro is faster. Done know about the sound. You should reach out to them to try theirs. Comparable in price. Small and compact but it will do the larger cakes
Both fun and informative - - - but that wibbly-wobbly table I have a large wood winder much like what you have and an electric - wood winder hands down
Might I recommend putting a piece of tape on that beginning strand that gets wound around to start. Might make it easier to find when it gets pulled into the center. Love your videos ❤
Hello there! I'm a newbie on your channel! And I bought a crappy one🥴. I need one I don't have to hold and pretty much feed it through!!!... But thanks to you I now know which end to start crochet with!😅. More so I want to know if I have to buy one of those wood winder to unwind my yarn first!? Then that winder to make my balls!!?
with the 3rd yarn you can actually see how the centerpull-end disappears into the skein... due to it flying around at the exact same height as where the winder spins around, after a few rounds of the winder it gets tucked underneath the next rounds... the difference with the winders that have you tuck the end away at the top is that it keeps the loose end out of the way, and thus making it impossible for it to get stuck underneath rounds of the winder...
I saw your firstt video with the first electric winder - I would have never thought of buying any winder - just didn't think anything more than my hooks were necessary. (Lol). However after seeing this video with the updated model, I'm interested in knowing more about the manual winder you showed/ used. I'm almost persuaded to get the electric update but before I do - tell me more about the manual winder you have. Thanks for sharing1!!!
Hey Toni! I love your videos so much. You taught me how to crochet during the pandemic times and you taught me how to tunisian crochet. I want to get a electric yarn ball winder and someone said put tape or tag for the center pull. What music do you use? My momma keeps getting copyright claims
not related, but do you think you could do a product review of the furls hooks, resin and metal? I am afraid to invest, but really like the look of them.
Thanks Toni for doing this review. I would not buy this, I would hate to do all of the threading, can’t say that I would be bothered by not doing the center pull I never use it. I love a yarn bowl wayyyy too much to have to have center pull.
One of the things I noticed with the old model was that when winding my yarn, if using a large skein (like a full jumbo skein of red heart super saver), it can't handle the whole skein. It'll get to a point where it's a size similar to what your Bernat skein got to, and then just stop. No matter how many times I turn it off and on, maybe it'll wind 2 rotations and then stop again. I wonder if the new one doesn't have as quick a weight capacity?
Do you think with the yarn hooked at the bottom, there's enough room to hook your finger around the center pull before you take the yarn off, so it kinda pulls it out as you slide it off the shaft of the winder?
I tried the first Caydo winder that you ranked, and frankly, it was bad news for me. Not only was it underpowered, it couldn't even wind a lightweight skein properly. I left a very bad review and had to return the thing. I'm willing to try the new version because I always have lots of yarn to wind, but we'll see if this one is any better or if I need to invest $$$ in a different machine.
I just had to say that I watched this while working on the Magnus cardigan from the list video you had a while back. Also, I think I'll stick with my hand winder...I'm a cheapskate in that sense.
Would you consider that the cakes on the new winder or the wooden winder are more compact then the old winder? My DH bought me one from Amazon (UK) and I just can't get a nice cake - they come out all flappy and saggy and I only used it twice!
The cakes that come off this winder and the old one are quite firm. I don't apply a lot of tension when winding manually, so those cakes are softer, but they don't fall apart. Hope that helps :-)
I bought this exact cake winder twice, pulled it out of the box and it was cracked, I returned it and got the new one 2 days later pulled it out of box set it up and it would not even turn on another defect. I don't dare try this company again. Quick question the area where you place the thread at the bottom, one of the points looked like it was going to break, curious is it still holding itself together, it looked like a stress point. At 10:31 one of the points looks like it is going to break, just checking to see how it is holding up?
Hmmm...isn't part of the awesomeness of winding yarn being able to have a frustration-free center pull? I'm not saying I wouldn't try one but...I wouldn't try THAT one.
whats CRAZY is i was watching that older video first and you posted this video only 2 hours earlier, its fate lol EDIT - thanks for the excuse to buy a new yarn toy lol
I love my electric ball winder (a gift), but alas, it only winds only 4-6 ounces. I would love to have one that does 8 -10 but I primarily use from the skein and only wind the leftovers. So this larger one, while reasonably priced, would be an unnecessary splurge.
As the Yarn Turns The last we saw Toni, she was at her whits' end. 😵💫 Her precious yarn ends were missing. 🥹 Will she find her loved ones? 🤔 A crime scene investigator 🧐 is seen tying #6 wt yarn around their ankle. Toni is holding onto the lead yarn. OMG, the inventor just jumped into the rabbit hole of yarn. We see some tension on the yarn. Toni is slowly frogging the ball. Relief fills the air as the hero is carrying Toni's loved ones in their arms. When her loved ones were asked how they got lost their reply was . . . "We got so wound up in excitement that we forgot to leave breadcrumbs." 🤣 How to end the drama of the missing yarn ends. Hide and seek of the yarn end, ends today [ ] Tape the yarn to the shaft of the ball winder. • Why? • To better hug you with my dear [ ] Make sure it is poking outside of the winding area. • Why? • To better see me with my dear No more diving down the rabbit hole of yarn. Easy, peasy, lemon sqeezy.
It looked like you left too long of a tail. When it started spinning, the tail flew up and got lost in the ball. See if leaving a short tail makes that center pull easier to find.
I don't use a winder. Don't see the need for it. And if I would use one, speed wouldn't be an issue. Doesn't matter really whether one is 5 seconds slower than the other one.
Auntie Toni MEANS business, FOR REAL! I am HERE for it! ☺️🧡🍦 Girl, can I come shop your stash?! You got the goods in there! 😉. Love it. I am not mad…I see you hustlin. 🐝🐝💛🤍🖤

Thanks. I have some Washi tape hanging around. I’ll try that and see if it works.
Ooooh I love this idea!

Skips away to put on Christmas list
I wouldn't call it a waste, just not a "must have".
I need an electric winder. I have been looking for one for my little tiny for my little yarn shop. Winding is just killing my shoulder.
I love your fingernails.
Hmmm...isn't part of the awesomeness of winding yarn being able to have a frustration-free center pull? I'm not saying I wouldn't try one but...I wouldn't try THAT one.
whats CRAZY is i was watching that older video first and you posted this video only 2 hours earlier, its fate lol
EDIT - thanks for the excuse to buy a new yarn toy lol
I love my electric ball winder (a gift), but alas, it only winds only 4-6 ounces. I would love to have one that does 8 -10 but I primarily use from the skein and only wind the leftovers. So this larger one, while reasonably priced, would be an unnecessary splurge.
As the Yarn Turns
The last we saw Toni, she was at her whits' end. 😵💫
Her precious yarn ends were missing. 🥹
Will she find her loved ones? 🤔
A crime scene investigator 🧐 is seen tying #6 wt yarn around their ankle. Toni is holding onto the lead yarn. OMG, the inventor just jumped into the rabbit hole of yarn. We see some tension on the yarn. Toni is slowly frogging the ball. Relief fills the air as the hero is carrying Toni's loved ones in their arms.
When her loved ones were asked how they got lost their
reply was . . . "We got so wound up in excitement that we forgot to leave breadcrumbs." 🤣
How to end the drama of the missing yarn ends.
Hide and seek of the yarn end, ends today
[ ] Tape the yarn to the shaft of the ball winder.
• Why?
• To better hug you with my dear
[ ] Make sure it is poking outside of the winding area.
• Why?
• To better see me with my dear
No more diving down the rabbit hole of yarn.
Easy, peasy, lemon sqeezy.
Does the end go through the hole at the bottom of the shaft
I tried to put it through, but it didn't fit.
Have you tried leaving a longer tail?
Like the amount of yarn you were able to get wound up, but for how many times I'd use it, it's a Nah from me for that price even with discount.
Super
It looked like you left too long of a tail. When it started spinning, the tail flew up and got lost in the ball. See if leaving a short tail makes that center pull easier to find.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
No more electric for me, I bought the purple one and I had nothing but trouble.
I don't use a winder. Don't see the need for it. And if I would use one, speed wouldn't be an issue. Doesn't matter really whether one is 5 seconds slower than the other one.
Waste of money for me, I can buy yarn instead. I have 5he Fiberco winde4 and lov3 it.
No, thank you.
The beginning yarn tail is too long. The speed of the winder makes the tail get caught as the yarn goes down and up on the center.
Auntie Toni MEANS business, FOR REAL! I am HERE for it! ☺️🧡🍦
Girl, can I come shop your stash?! You got the goods in there! 😉. Love it. I am not mad…I see you hustlin. 🐝🐝💛🤍🖤
I don't have one yet, but looks interesting.
