She also had bad timing of when to leave WWE with WCW closing down a few months before. If she had left WWF in 1998 instead of 2001 she could've just gone and work with them instead. Granted WCW probably would've had no idea of how to use her properly.
I really wish they could have worked something out with her, I always enjoyed her character and her matches and believed she was the one woman who could really manhandle the male wrestlers.
She got into a shoot fight with Joey Buttafucco the guy who was involved with Amy Fisher. He was a middle-aged man probably in his fifties. He was a mechanic and had arms the size of my thighs. He was a larger man maybe 250. It was celebrity boxing. She did Ok when she stayed off of him but when they closed he manhandled her. This a guy 20 years older than her who isn't an athlete. @@Kingslayer_au yes she was also going to be the tx on terminator 3 but Vince badmouthed her to the studios and I believe that because tony atlas said that when he was leaving WWF that Vince would bad mouth him to other promoters so there would only be his. Yes but there are plenty of female action roles. We have WonderWoman, Rey on Star Wars, Hunger games etc. Chyna being a gimmick was part of her problem oddly enough
I wasn't into wrestling at the time, but I would have loved to see an action hero like Chyna in movies! Yes, there were tons of female action heroes in the 90s, but none of them were built like Chyna. It would have been something different.
Guys didn't want to work with her because no man wants to lose to a woman; no male wrestler wants to put a female wrestler over. Beating Chyna gives male wrestlers no credibility, while losing to her would destroy their credibility in the eyes of 1990s/2000s wrestling fans.
As a business owner, relationships in the work place are a liability regardless. Some work out and some don't. But the fact remains the same, a business is a business and co-worker relationship's are a hit and miss. If the miss starts to effect the people or the jaded one involved and / or the moral of the overall work environment decisions will have to be made. But ,99% of the time they work themselves out. And there is no amount of money that can validate a person's worth.....period. Like I said, it's a tightrope that can result in all kinds of consequences, good or bad, and depends on the individuals involved and how it it intertwines with the overall moral as well as personally according to the individuals involved. I have had to make some tough choices to where it was a (lose lose) situation. But I do think that Chyna was a special talent, but there is no compensation, materialistic or money wise, in my opinion, for a broken heart. R.I.P Chyna
As sad as her story is, at the end of the day, she made mid to upper 6 figures a year if you count endorsements I am sure she still brought home over a million a year. PUt in big time feuds and was featured. Sure, the end of her WWE career was crap, but it's not like she struggled to put food on the table.
She only died a few years back and nobody was calling her prior. Hell she turned to porn because she had so few options. She couldn't even make it in TNA.
@@misterpinkandyellow74 Lol Like Sable, accusing Vince of crap..& Vince actually owns the company!! it's so funny when people say someone will "never be back". Warrior & Jarrett literally extorted McMahon, & they weren't only welcome back, they're in the HOF.
I liked Chyna back in the day but let's be honest, she became one of those people where it was never her and always somebody else's fault. Messy breakup with HHH: Blamed him and Steph, no one really knows what really happened to this day apart from them three. Demanded too much money to re-sign: Blamed the company. (Although her argument regarding being relegated to the Women's division after Wrestling Men for years was valid) Went to Japan in 2002 to work for NJPW: Didn't work out Dated X-Pac: Ended up falling into Porn & falsely accused him of Rape. Has also claimed Hunter was violent towards her when no one else has ever said that. Briefly in TNA in 2011: Didn't last long there either. I know it's a cruel thing to say especially now, but she's the common denominator here.
It's easy to feel sorry for her and to put more stock in her narratives than they probably deserve... but at the end of the day love triangles suck but they happen. People cheat and people get cheated on, but life goes on. HHH did do Chyna kinda dirty (based on what we know), and I'm sure he felt awful when he heard about her death... but at the end of the day he is not responsible for her death. It's not fair to put the blame at his feet.
6:17. Chyna as good as someone else might think WAS NEVER EVER EVER as good as Steve Austin was. Hell the Rock was never as good as Steve Austin was. The Rock was at best a jobber compared to Austin. So Chyna would be the equivalent of a Ring Rat... in my opinion... 🤷♂️
Rock had already surpassed Austin in 1999 and has now transended the business to become the biggest crossover star EVER. Rock has 400m followers compared to 7m for Austin on instagram. Austin is literally a speck of dust compared to the Rock.
On Off The Record, Landsberg said he'd heard that Chyna asked for $800K a year but Chyna denies asking for that much but here and Chyna's sister said she wouldn't work for less than $1M guaranteed.
Also Xpac stated on Austin podcast that a tag team match with him and Joanie was set up in Japan. They offered her more money because she was a megastar out there and more popular than he was. He refused the match and it was a big argument because he wanted the same amount. Austin sounded like he agreed with him to. Sounds a bit similar to this one. Can blame her for being delusional. Lots of people with far more talent than her made less than what JR even offered her. Really bad timing as well considering WCW and ECW disappeared and there was tons of talent who couldn't even get work.
I'm not a feminist, I want to make that clear, but why does she have to assume the consequences of a fallout of the relationship between her and HHH that JR describes at 8:16? "Why do you want to be here? Every time you come to work, you see Hunter." Why didn't JR ask this of Stephanie? Every time you come to work, you see Chyna? Why does Chyna and her career have to pay for HHH and Stephanie getting together? Why are JR, Vince and the company expecting her to separate from the company and to pay a price for HHH leaving her when he chose to leave for another female, Stephanie? The very least that WWE and Vince could've done was treat her fairly professionally. But they couldn't even do that. They pushed her out the door because the other two (HHH and Stephanie) got together.

I remember hearing a story where she had popped a breast implant while in the ring. She had been wrestling a lot more than what she was supposed to, and decided she wanted to cut it back to what her contract stipulated, but VM told her she had to keep wrestling at the same rate, despite what her contract said. It seems that he was trying to get her to quit. Geeee I wonder why that could be...? Ahem (Stephanie/HHH), ahem.
Wrong, she ruptured a breast implant in 98, only a year after she started working for them. She went to her surgeon and told him she needed more robust implants due to her larger frame. That is how she ended up with implants named after her, the Chyna 2000's.
She should have taken the 400k guarantee if that's what she was offered. That's still a shit ton of guaranteed money. Also, I think she was pissed Vince wanted her to wrestle in the women's division. @@KennethGallahan You have no clue what you're talking about. 400k in 2001 would be 700k in today's money. Anybody could easily live on that unless they're a complete idiot. Very very few people can remain as relevant/still have the star power when not in WWE (Rock, Austin, Hogan and Taker). Stop blaming everyone else other than Chyna herself, she valued herself way higher than WWE valued her. After WWE, no one really wanted her. Her stock diminished fast. If WWE wanted to make Chyna a star on the level of Stone Cold or The Rock they absolutely could have. To this day she's the only female performer who was over nearly as much as the top guys in the company at the time, especially in 1999 and 2000. She wasn't the greatest promo or worker but her look was phenomenal and the fans loved her. In fact I think it's possible she could have been the first female WWE champion if not for the circumstances between Triple H and Stephanie. I don't necessarily fault Triple H or Stephanie for having an affair, falling in love, etc. Was it a shitty move? Absolutely, but the heart wants what the heart wants. It's a shame that it clearly took a toll not only on Chyna's career but her mental health too. That said, I'll play devil's advocate and say that given these unfortunate circumstances there was never a way to keep Chyna at a top tier level in the company without more drama ensuing. So to that degree I understand why she was put out to pasture. Regardless, it no doubt had a hand in the path Chyna went down after she "left" WWE. She was very talented and had a tremendous presence in the industry.
Well, you can certainly blame them for the way they acted afterwards, can't you? I mean, since you're giving a grown adults a pass, for "falling in love" aka an affair lol How about the way they basically blackballed her, & pretended she didn't exist, as she was begging for acknowledgement from the company she gave Everything to? All the woman wanted was an induction into the HOF, when she was alive to see it. It's so bizarre, how people give that a "pass". Now, the WWE is wishing her a Happy birthday, & acknowledging her w DX & fans are applauding it 🙄 Let's not pretend HHH & Steph weren't behind the BS. It's funny how Chyna was held to such high standards, yet they have people in the HOF who've done p0rn, who have been to prison, who have DV convictions etc.
She was never near the level of Austin or Rock, she was a novelty act who's only remembered because they had her beat guys. She was woman's champion around the time she left. Her time had past. She also asked for money at the worst possible time with WCW and ECW gone. Japan wouldn't use women really either so she had nowhere to really go.
Chyna was not nearly as over as this. You said it yourself, she had a great look but she wasn't a worker or a good promo. You need at minimum decent work and a good promo to be that over. I liked Chyna, but she was at best as over as your mid-carders.
Did JR ever explain why she was taken off the air SIX months before her contract was up while she still held the title? Well she's dead now so people can say anything. In old interviews in 01 after she left she was really professional about everything as well didnt throw anybody under the bus.
I know I'm months behind adding a comment but I have to say this....I met this woman many years ago (long story involving a golf trip, an accident, and my family)and she was the epitome of grace and kindness. Yes, she stayed in character for a good bit of it but during the brief conversation (which she actually seemed interested in also hearing about me a bit ....she wasn't self centered at all ) she broke character and was Joanie for a bit. I know people give her shit for being Manish and such but ill not lie, as a young man I did have a thing for her (which I did admit to her when I met her lol.... hell being a medieval reenactor I even kissed her hand in a "chivalry is not desd" type of thing which i believe lead to her breaking character lo) and despite any stories about her being hermaphrodite or whatever (which have been debunked) I still think she was quite a woman. The whole "not conventionaly attractive" thing burns my buns because she was a very attractive woman...albeit one who could toss you around like a rag doll...and her muscleture was not that of huge muscles everywhere but more toned with the muscles pumped in right places (arms and legs for example)
The best thing for her to have done was to take time offnaway from wrestling and WWE. Find whatever projects she could for a year or two and then reachout after everything had blown over. Instead she went on stern and other talk shows talking crap. Then turned into an absolute train wreck. I feel for her tho. RIP
Darn...Chyna was making 7 figues plus! She truly was making tons of money, but she wanted her guarantee. I read Lita made almost 1 million and more than that in 2001.
chyna wasn't thinking of the long term haul. if the professional wrestling business is your passion you do whatever it takes to stay in the business whether it be working backstage or a minor role as an on screen talent.
Completely disagree. DX never looked as badass or cool without Chyna. She was the greatest female wrestler, in image and charisma, in the history of the business. Worth every penny and a huge mistake to let her go. All because Stephanie couldn’t keep IT in her pants.
If she was slated to beat Austin for the WWF title but was then offered to settle for the intercontinental championship with Jeff Jerret instead because Austin did not want to put a woman over and lose to a woman. That clearly right there shows, she was on that level especially with the popularity of DX in 2001.
She was never even close to Austin level, nobody was with the exception of the Rock. He saved the WWE, she couldn't even get a contract in wrestling after she left and had one match in TNA. She was not even in DX in 2001. She was the woman's champion. She was a novelty act.
In my opinion the Mount Rushmore of WWE woman is Sable, Trish Stratus, Chyna, Mickie james , and Lita..... If youre on that list then u Defiently derserved a 1 million contract.
"On letting Chyna leave." Like you did her a favor lol. People do forget that the "good old JR" character is just that, a character. You've always been a pretty ruthless business man in the end.
She was never going to get that kind of money from WWE. Sable was more popular than she was and WWE gave her the boot when her head got big so Chyna should of learned something from that. She would of made 1 to 2 mil a year if she had just stayed on with the company and with the brand split in 2002 they could of easily put Haitch, Steph on Smackdown and Chyna on RAW and kept them seperated.
My question is this, was Chyna bring in the big bucks to WWE? And secondly, did she have alot of fans? Even if its wasn't a million, they could of gave her more money if that was the case! No one...Quits or leaves a job without having a back up, or they had enough of the bull shit!!
Dude if chyna never did porn and didn’t have a drug problem, Her coming back and doing an angle with Stephanie McMahon would’ve drawn so much fucking money!!!!!! Like that would’ve been the ultimate fucking angle!!!
Chyna pigeonholed her own career. It's not like she could work convincingly with most of the roster and she thought she was too good to work with the women (which she really wasn't). Yeah, the women's division was not that good at the time, but she could have helped elevate the talent that was there. She and Lita (and eventually) Trish and Molly and the rest could have had some memorable matches and stories.
Dude Chyna was wrestling the likes of Rikishi, Jericho, Eddie, Rock, Stone Cold, etc. Why in the fuck would she go elevate the women's division when WWE (at that time) wasn't even interested in propping it up? They did more with Mae Young and the Fabolous Moolah than many of the young women talent. Women were seen as a side show with their wrestle in milk gimmick and bikini contests at the time. When they did wrestle, they'd be lucky to get 5 mins in the ring. In addition to that, Chyna was bigger and just as strong as some men in the back. She had the Xena or Wonder Woman look to her and actually played the part well. If it wasn't for Chyna, the Women's division may have never gotten over in WWE because she was one of the few that was actually wrestling. Lita, Trish, Torrie, etc came later. Sable, Jackie, etc weren't even being used properly and all the women were paired with men anyway.
@@atlien1988 She had a great look and presence, but she was not good enough in the ring to keep going up the card. And her promo work was not great. I think she should have worked with both men and women and maybe she'd have improved, but she just wasn't that good. It's like having the Goldberg argument. Was he over? Absolutely. Was it the best longterm way to handle his character and develop his skills and whatnot? No. She didn't want to work with women bc she felt it devalued her, but she wanted to work with the men and bring their stock down? Myopic and selfish, and again, she was not very good in the ring. The men always had to carry her.
Trouble is though, after Wrestling Men for 2 or 3 years and then having to wrestle women, Chyna would have seen that as a Demotion and going backwards in her career. And whilst she asked for too much money and then adopted the Amber Heard style logic of "it's never my fault" after she left WWE, she had a valid point in regards to that.
I was never a fan of Chyna. Her matches were boring and predictable. With that said, it was fucked up how she was treated. Triple H left her for Steph (who’s A LOT hotter). Afterwards, she was tossed to the curve like a piece of trash. She was heartbroken and turned to drugs and porn. She needed an intervention. Unfortunately, she fell through the cracks.
Joanie had a lot of issues. Going back to the WWE wasn't going to solve those issues Things end, and she wasn't a hit in Hollywood She ran out of road.
JR pushed her out because it was easier for him. He should’ve tried talking her into taking the lower figure. Maybe she would have have found another boyfriend and maybe she would still be alive today.
People date in wrestling all the time. They didn’t push out Matt Hardy after Edge started dating Lita. They kinda pushed out John Morrison because of Molina. I think they knew what they were doing, it was a way to get rid of her
She was a great character, brilliantly presented. Genuinely was the walking embodiment of feminism.
However saying that, she was a side attraction.
Seems if you live in a bubble your view of reality becomes very detached. She has a sad story, however as the parable goes.. I was a lion once. And she truly was
A lot of women started to watch women's wrestling and got interested because if her.
side attraction? Chyna is one of the greatest if not THE greatest female wrestler to ever grace the squared circle. She deserved 1m dollar contract easily, the only reason they wouldnt give it to her is because Paul cheated on her and they wanted to get rid of her ASAP so they cut her contract down.
@@Kingslayer_au yes she was also going to be the tx on terminator 3 but Vince badmouthed her to the studios and I believe that because tony atlas said that when he was leaving WWF that Vince would bad mouth him to other promoters so there would only be his. It's 2020 and Hollywood still hasn't found the female Schwarzenegger or female Stalone for that matter.
Yes but there are plenty of female action roles. We have WonderWoman, Rey on Star Wars, Hunger games etc. Chyna being a gimmick was part of her problem oddly enough
There are already amazing female characters from that era like Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner, women don’t need to strive to copy men.
I wasn't into wrestling at the time, but I would have loved to see an action hero like Chyna in movies! Yes, there were tons of female action heroes in the 90s, but none of them were built like Chyna. It would have been something different.
As a kid a was a believer in Chyna and liked her. Never knew about all this drama and guys not wanting to work with her.
R.I.P Chyna
I was at the 1996 In Your House at Chattanooga TN where she made her debut.
I was at Judgement Day 2001 where she had her last WWF match.
As sad as her story is, at the end of the day, she made mid to upper 6 figures a year if you count endorsements I am sure she still brought home over a million a year. PUt in big time feuds and was featured. Sure, the end of her WWE career was crap, but it's not like she struggled to put food on the table.

(Although her argument regarding being relegated to the Women's division after Wrestling Men for years was valid)
Went to Japan in 2002 to work for NJPW: Didn't work out
Dated X-Pac: Ended up falling into Porn & falsely accused him of Rape.
Chyna was the women!! May she Rest In Peace

The B&M inverted makes for a super fun 4k pov ride! Awesome!
Could you imagine Chyna and Beth Phoenix as a womans Tag Team... WWE doesn’t understand real talent
Are you stupid fanboy? Can’t you understand she wants the same pay as stone cold! No freaking way wwe or anyone gonna pay her that money.
I guess when it comes to a guy hes not believing in his own hype hes just letting you know what hes worth 🤷♀️🤷♀️

Anybody else surprised by the face cam? I miss the grilled hamburger already.
One word. Nepotism.
Because Chyna was the one that was suicidal by her own admission, not Stephanie.

@@KennethGallahan You have no clue what you're talking about. 400k in 2001 would be 700k in today's money. Anybody could easily live on that unless they're a complete idiot. Her sister said she was offered £400k a year which she refused! That’s her own fault for refusing to honest! Only a few people where getting £1million around that time: (Rock, Austin, Taker, HHH) if she had taken the money, she would have had £400k guaranteed for a further 5 years unless she breached her contract.
She soon realised as big of a star that she was in WWE, without the WWE not many people care about them.
I liked Chyna, but she was at best as over as your mid-carders.
she would have been champion she said but because she did playboy she didnt

Going back to the WWE wasn't going to solve those issues
Things end, and she wasn't a hit in Hollywood
She ran out of road.
1 millimeter guarantee?
Hunter wanted to keep his relationship with Chyna secret as he didn't want Stephanie to think he was gay.
I don’t believe it.
Look how many people dated in WWE and didn’t get pushed out because they broke up with each other. Was Debra and Sable pushed out because of her breaking up Jeff Jarret, Stone Cold Steve Austin, or Brock Lesnar.
One of the biggest mistakes WWE has ever made.
