I almost gave up on shrimp before I got started. I bought 20 on eBay and all but two died within a couple of days. I contacted the seller and he sent me 20 more that were much bigger and looked healthier. It’s been about 10 days and they’re doing great. Based on what I learned from your videos, I let the aquarium get well established, including some Java moss. The moss did just what you said, it died back, but within a week I had new growth and now it’s growing like crazy. My shrimp love it. Thanks for your great videos.
I live in Indonesia, specifically the island of Java, Javanese moss is often found on the islands of Kalimantan, Sumatra, Java. found above the water flow. Java Moss usually lives in cold places or only certain areas and when Java Moss is kept in the capital area where the temperature is around 30°-35° Celsius it will turn yellow and die. he is able to live without oxygen in our aquascape with a water PH of 6-8. Thank you for your content I am from Indonesia
Absolutely relatable video! I had bought a small clump of javamoss which wss the size of a pingpong ball... Within a month it grew as big as a woolen yarn ball in my 1ft tank and I could give my buddy a major chunk of it for his tank.... I've noticed the hair algae growth has drastically reduced after adding javamoss too and baby shrimps love to colonize in and around it
A buddy and I tried to grow Java moss at ~33°C ambient temp summer however it didn't work. But we loved Java moss a lot, So we came up with a solution to grow Java moss on top of floating plants and under aquarium top covers. The subtle evaporation of water brings down temp around Java moss and gives it humidity, and the access to fresh CO2 (as it's immersed) helps it flourish. Java moss is extremely versatile but we have to be a bit tricky to keep temps to acceptable levels. In winters we grow it submerged, in Summers we grow it immersed. I have many other aquarium plants but Java moss is my fav....

Hi. I've just started keeping red cherry shrimp. I set the tank up for around a month, 2 weeks into the month, I added java moss. 2 weeks later I added the shrimp and it's been about another 6 weeks and it's still not really growing. Do you have any ideas how to speed it up a bit. Thanks James
I´ve found a seller who sells € 6,- per deep take out tub. He sells online and through aquarium fairs and that's when I bought some java moss off him and split it between two shrimp tanks. The blue dreams I got from the same fair, breed like wild fire. So many shrimplets after nearly 4 weeks! The red ones I got from my lfs haven't bred yet, but a few were zooming around today looking for love perhaps.
It was lovely and green when I first got it but then small brown bits appeared now even more brown, I watched loads of your videos especially the ones on java fern and moss even the fern isn't looking to great which I don't know if that's down to me and the way I glued the fern down, I upgraded my tank to a 110l around 3 weeks ago so fingers crossed its just all adjusting and turns out how I would like to. Oh by the way you sell plants don't you ? If so do you sell surface plants
My clumps of java moss went brown and mostly died but the ends of the fronds(?) Grew really long and vertical. I didn't think the light was too low but that's all I can come up with? Threw most of it away but still have a little bit left. Could there be a mineral deficiency?
Java moss typically just needs some light and a mineral deficiency is unlikely, but not impossible. I would just stick with it. Give it another 4 to 6 weeks (I know, patience isn’t my strong point either) and see how it’s doing. I’ve grown huge clumps of Java Moss from the tiniest pieces left on a rock or piece of wood 👍🏻
Hi. Truth be told, breeding shrimp to sell is hard work, although good money. It turns out, making TH-cam videos is also hard work, but less risky than breeding and shipping shrimp. Ultimately, we make the same money making TH-cam videos, but with far less risk. We decided to transition from breeding shrimp to sell into filming shrimp for TH-cam. Hope that makes sense 🤔
@@FishKeepingAnswers Totally makes sense, certainly now you managed to reach 20k followers already. I can only imagine how many things extra would be involved in running a business in selling shrimp aside from the breeding.
For the hair algae i originally got loads of it in my moss. As soon as i reduced the lighting level by covering light with paper the algae went away, over maybe 1 month. Im sure the shrimp helped eat it as it died
Does this advice also works for other types of moss like Pelia moss or Christmas moss. I mean at least there are some features that are the same right?
I just make a simple plant tank, I got aqua soil in it. I know Moss take nutrients from water. My question is it a need to put plant liquid fertilizer to grow moss and more green? After watching your video. You do claim if the Java moss is brown just let it be it will naturally grow to green colour with lights on. Currently I do see my java moss not say green. Tend to be dull brown green like that. So I just let it be? About plant liquid fertilizer I don't need to put right? The only plant I stick to aqua soil is fern. I know by right it attach to wood but nevertheless I just plant in aquasoil.
good timing!! i have huge clumps of java moss and mini christmas moss growing wild in all my nano tanks… and i really need to figure out a way to trim them down lol. have you ever done a video about red root floaters, another plant people say is easy.. ? for some reason mine all wilted and died… 😅 They had plenty of light in an overstocked guppy tank, low flow, ph 8. I wonder if I just wasn’t fertilizing the water column enough…
yeah, i'm going to try them again since red root floaters keep shorter roots! i had frogbit before and the roots went all the way down into the substrate! this time i will try using a fertilizer in the water column. thanks for all the info you share on this channel, its always really helpful :D@@FishKeepingAnswers
pretty sure the low flow is what did it. red root floater hated my betta tank, but loved my high flow tank. i don't think they appreciate stagnant water.
Never new some places grow Java moss out of water to sale. That’s the one thing I don’t like about java moss is the fact that algae sticks to it to well.
I had my tank running for a month, and shrimp are molting, but they die afterward. I added aqueon shrimp essential to help with molt. Why can't I keep them alive long enough ? The water parameters are stable
How come my java moss is covered in thread algae. Other plants are not bothered by algae, only my java moss all the time. I remove strands every day, but they keep coming back. It does grow, but it is not beautiful because of the thread algae.
It can be a problem. You could always try dialing the light back a bit. Try running it for 6 hours instead of 8 (or however many you have). It might help
actuallyy my java moss is growing both under and above water.. half growing below while more than half spreading above on my drift wood sticking out.. and the one on top looks more lush and better than the one growing below and the one below looks shit like stringy and not really good

It’s definitely worth seeking out locally if you can find it 👍🏻

Guppy grass is excellent for shrimp 👍🏻

Can the moss grow on coco coir?
Moss doesn’t need any thing to grow. It can be grown without substrate or with out being attached to any decorations etc.
Is 60 degrees Fahrenheit warm enough for Java moss to grow?
In my experince, Java Moss grows well in both heated and unheated tanks. It will probably grow just fine at 60 👍🏻
Do you recommend cutting out the brown parts of Java ? Or let it just go
I would say, for the first few weeks, just leave it be. Then, once the moss is green and established, remove the brown if you want to 👍🏻
Would it grow on a turtle dock?

If you put calcium in the shrimps feed will they need coral for molting🤔

As it grows it will take out ammonia, nitrite and nitrate 👍🏻
Ok
if you cant grow java moss, drain the petrol out of your tank and fill it with water
