I love the hivemind people share, where if the majority is saying something then others will be followers too it - whether it's right or wrong. Especially on Twitter, it's like people struggle to think, feel, or even speak on their own.
What blew my mind was the guy who said "you think there are 10000000000 trees on earth" I get the Dunning-Kruger effect but why do the actual stupidest people put their dukes up against middle school knowledge like "no, *I* was taught that there's infinity stars in the galaxy!"
They weren't stupid because they thought there were 9999999999 stars in the galaxy, they were stupid because they replied before fact-checking. Moral of the lesson is even if you think you're 100% right, you could be a click away from being another dumbass so FACT CHECK and don't insult people because you think they're wrong, as you guarantee embarrassment for yourself if it turns out they were actually right. Plus even if it is part of the curriculum I would hardly expect an average person to know the exact amount of stars in the galaxy because they were taught it in school, number stuff is pretty forgettable lol.
the thing is, if they had written 2 less zeros (I think that's possible because it was probably spamming 0s), that would be less than the actual number of trees
The fact that people have practically unlimited knowledge at their fingertips and are still this wrong is WILD. It's not even about being right anymore, it's about having someone to hate and call wrong. I wish we could go back to a time where the only people online were nerds who cared about the right information and doing cool things.

you cannot say "the internet taught people..." as if you can blame the entire internet. for example, anyone who uses the internet intelligently can get the information they need, and those kind of people ends up being more open-minded, less hostile, and admit they have made mistakes
@user-qu2bp8zt6f I wasn't blaming the entire internet. You didn't even attempt to ask or ponder on what I meant. This is what I mean by close-minded and hostile for no reason. I don't want to shame you though because everyone is fallible. The veil of anonymity and the constant negativity and the bad influences. That has ruined the internet. Negativity gets clicks, teaches people to be more negative. I'm lucky that I was recommended good influences by the algorithm. Educational channels, channels who speak about good morals. I was taught how to retroactively reflect on my actions nearly objectively. But on many parts of the internet, echo chambers and negativity is encouraged, sometimes explicitly, but often implicitly. I've fallen into it too.
@MattMarkYT you have already given out your explanations, which i have understood, but being the perfectionist that i sometimes am, i feel compelled to make a reply for those who could misinterpret your comment, that the internet itself is bad, leading it to be something that is better avoided. it would have been best if you had clarified by yourself, that not all parts of the internet are bad. i would even argue that you were being close-minded, and being hostile to my reply for no good reason. i do admit that my reply is hostile, but it has a good intent, a good reason to be there, and an open-minded person would see that i was only attempting to clarify about the internet, and point out your inaccuracy, which i had hoped that will make you understand and potentially get you to be more accurate in the future. my mistake was that i did not spend my time making my reply less hostile, but this time, you have your fault too, which was your mistake being that you assumed my complete disregard of your words. i simply did not choose to comment on the points you were trying to make, as i understood, and had nothing to say it about it, however, that does not mean i have disregarded it entirely, as i have made a reply which tried to clarify on what you have already commented
@@user-qu2bp8zt6f Let me start this message by saying I have these kinds of discussions with my friends sometimes. When I disagree, it's purely to have a healthy discussion. That being said, let me begin. It's redundant to point out that I'm not talking the entire internet as we have all felt the positive impact of the internet. The very nature of the internet being virtual and anonymous is part of the issue making people more hostile. Therefore, technically the internet itself is part of the problem. That is what I meant. While I agree that my statement had an accuracy, I don't think it was the one you pointed out. I think my inaccuracy was saying "people" instead of "some people", which is why I've edited the comment. As for the claim that my comment is hostile, I can see why you interpreted it as hostile. I tried my best to push back while admitting my own faults. I just wanted you to realize what you had unintentionally done. That's why I added the comment on not shaming you. Also, I am someone who uses the internet to learn (e.g. coding, blender, etc.), but when I use it for entertainment, I eventually fall into negativity (like this video lol). I try to keep my algorithm on positive videos but it often tries to get me to watch negative videos. That is another issue with the algorithmic modern internet. You can't really escape it without going through a lot of effort or simply cutting back on internet usage. I don't think I'm an outlier here. I admit that I misinterpreted the message you wished to convey, which was to argue the semantics of my wording. Which, ironically, is why it's important to word things more clearly. I interpreted it as you assuming I was saying the entire internet is bad. As for you being a perfectionist, I don't think you are. You just wanted clearer communication. I get that :)

This is how you know folks lack education & it has been going on for quite some time and is still on the steady decline. Then again how much more declining can there be? Research is not in everybody's forte. But that public "rope" one is the wildest one I've ever seen on Twitter.
This is not true. The most educated people tend to be really stupid as seen from college campuses. The issue is actually that people only learn from the school curriculum and don't learn from real world experience and by doing their own research into things outside of what their teachers tell them. This leads to people being closed minded and considering it is on twitter many people refuse to admit their mistakes and refuse to do basic research. People want an enemy to harass online not to debate or to learn something new just someone they can use as a punching bag.
@@gordonfreeman7187 what do you mean by "as seen from college campuses" while yes, public schools don't really reward critical thinking, a lot of college majors do, stuff like computer or cognitive science, literature, art, etc. besides stuff like math and literature is important to learn to be able to think critically and analyse information, the big issue is how school is inherentlyl extrinsic motivation wise, and in fact punishes you for failure, which makes being wrong seem like a bad thing you are punished for, instead of what it is in reality(a chance to grow and become better) if school was more intrisnsicly motivated, and put more focus on learning from mistakes in place of making no mistakes, it would work way better.
@teiull9388 A lot of colleges push political beliefs and don't allow for critical thinking. Mostly an American problem. You can tell by the amount of people getting useless degrees, the pointless protests that take places in these campuses over something that does not effect them and they have no control over, the fact many people once graduating struggle to get a job with their degree (unless it is STEM or medical).
I remember back when the average person knew there were 8 planets in the solar system. If I wasn’t sure about something, I’d look it up and often find myself scrolling through articles related to my questions for a few minutes. These people seem to have such minuscule attention spans that they cannot bother looking up something before getting personal over something that shouldn’t even concern them in the first place. It’s a shame, but gives me more reasons to not use Twitter.
To be fair, this is most likely a combination of: 1: 3 trillion trees on earth just sounds way too high of a number. I also at first thought that was a joke until I looked it up. 2: we are used to that most numbers related to space are just unthinkably large. simply telling someone how far the sun is away from earth is allready a giantic number, but it is nothing compared to other stuff.
That does not make it fair. It doesn't matter what you think sounds correct based on your intuition. It doesn't matter how ridiculous something sounds. You should always fact check. Relying on your intuition may work often, but there are still many times where it will fail you and you will be wrong. It's a collection of all these fails that make up most instances of people confidently being wrong on the internet. On singular cases, it may not be so harmful, but it's something that really stacks up over time and can even greatly change the way and direction of your life.
Twitter and Reddit both have these types of people. It's insane when you say something that is provably true and these people ratio you. It's better to live in echo chambers, I suppose.
what pisses me off the most is that if someone ratios someone their opinion is seen as the correct opinion. Which is stupid because we have instances like this. This happens all the time and it’s so annoying cause the people who are in the wrong are publicly embarrassing themselves and you for correcting them. Soooo stupid
@@Sagfanfan Ironically that kind of supports his point, the concept of the trillion is so massive that the 3 didn't actually matter enough to be retained.
"Hey an astrophysics major here!" ah that genuinely made me cringe so badly, imagine stating you're a major in something and still being completely wrong.
Trees aren't necessarily creating it either. Its all just there. All of it. All of our gaseous composition just goes through cycles with many sources. So if trees even disappear tomorrow, the other lifeforms might populate rapidly to recreate the balance. Geologically, the times when the gaseous composition changes drastically is when material gets trapped under where it cannot conveniently get back in our atmosphere. That's how we dig up hydrocarbons. So really, unless we bury the oxygen deep where life is very slow or non-existent, we'll always have it.

This is hard to watch. The internet has taught some people to be close-minded, be hostile for no good reason, and to never admit you're wrong.
you cannot say "the internet taught people..." as if you can blame the entire internet. for example, anyone who uses the internet intelligently can get the information they need, and those kind of people ends up being more open-minded, less hostile, and admit they have made mistakes
@@user-qu2bp8zt6f If "erm actually" was a person 🤓

These people look at troll physics videos and then recommend them as educational.
@@gordonfreeman7187 what do you mean by "as seen from college campuses"
while yes, public schools don't really reward critical thinking, a lot of college majors do, stuff like computer or cognitive science, literature, art, etc.
besides stuff like math and literature is important to learn to be able to think critically and analyse information, the big issue is how school is inherentlyl extrinsic motivation wise, and in fact punishes you for failure, which makes being wrong seem like a bad thing you are punished for, instead of what it is in reality(a chance to grow and become better)
if school was more intrisnsicly motivated, and put more focus on learning from mistakes in place of making no mistakes, it would work way better.
The fact that they dont know the difference between "universe" and "galaxy" is mind blowing
"I know that I'm stupid, but when I see that others are stupider than me I feel my heart grow" -Ion Creangă
People used to think that lack of access to information is what made people stupid. The internet has proven that is completely untrue.
Ragebait used to be bait
Rageboat
now it's genuinely just "rage" no bait needed
Aside from the stupidity of the mob, this is genuinely a cool fact that i did not know
To be fair, this is most likely a combination of:
1: 3 trillion trees on earth just sounds way too high of a number.
Happy New Year everyone
u too
2025 !!!!!!
🎉
Nothing makes me believe that we've reached Idiocracy more than people being confidently wrong on twitter
i think thats how twitter always was
@sergejmizi True, but man this is a particularly egregious example
@RetroPlus yeah i also havent seen it to this level
after you posted this all the people that called him wrong got sent to another dimension to be eternally ratiod
what pisses me off the most is that if someone ratios someone their opinion is seen as the correct opinion. Which is stupid because we have instances like this.
This happens all the time and it’s so annoying cause the people who are in the wrong are publicly embarrassing themselves and you for correcting them. Soooo stupid
Did a quick google search, took me under a minute, found out kara hadnt graduated from kindergarten yet
10 trillion is a number so unimaginably massive that I'd never think there were that many trees.
its 3 trillion
@@Sagfanfan close enough-ish 👌
Proof that I have the attention span of a cookie.
Funniest part is the number of trees compared to stars doesn't matter whatsoever. Stars are not creating the oxygen we breathe.
All the oxygen atoms in our atmosphere were created by a Star.
@@Rill_1 well tbf the same goes for like everything else on earth
