    I’ve had to replace this part every year since I purchased this tractor. Always the left side. Thankfully it’s quick, easy and relatively inexpensive. Nice video, very clear.

      Thanks. When putting it together I noticed that there is a plastic busing at the top of the axle where the e clip goes on the spindle. It was all chewed up. I ended up replacing that later. Disappointing that it was made of plastic.

      Hi Ark... mine cracked a week ago. Did it slow down your mower while driving with the blades engaged?

      Great video. Thanks! Is there usually a washer that goes onto the spindle before putting on the washer? I didn't noticed one here (or when I was taking off my shot spindle). On mine, the little fitting that the wheel goes up against was completely warn through and detached. When I look at some diagrams, they show a washer going on before the wheel (and then one or two after the wheel). I wonder if this avoids the problem mine had. Here is the description in the diagram -> 532121749: Washer 25/32 x 1-1/4 x 16 Ga.

    Great video. Glad to know it's an easy fix. Just noticed yesterday the cap is off the top of left side steering assembly. The assembly part is sticking up out about 1/2" not sire what happened or when. Anyhow, going to replace it soon

    Very helpful for repairing my Husqvarna 42/48 and way cheaper than a shop. Thanks!

    Tip, use a heat gun at a safe distance to warm up the grease caps, they come off much easier, just dont go crazy and melt them. And wear work gloves

    James, once you disassembled the left axle I expected to see a worn or broken bearing but it's actually a solid shaft inside a sleeve. Was the unit bent in some way? I see others posted having the same issue but other than physically bent how would the toe-in like this occur?
    PS: It'll never pass inspection with a tire that worn! LOL

    How do you figure that the original part got bent?

  • @CajunGreenMan
    @CajunGreenMan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have to admit, I would've just tried to bend the horizontal piece on the spindle, then put the tire back on to measure it, rinse repeat until it was level. But if you're going to sell it, I can understand wanting to make sure the buyer has new parts, and not DIY Engineered parts. Keep up the great work!

    • @jhargrove1108
      @jhargrove1108 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That actually works, but I decided to stop bending and get new ones.

    Is there a plastic bushing inside the spindle body housing

  • @bigguy992
    @bigguy992 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm doing that job today should I grease the spindle

  • @jhargrove1108
    @jhargrove1108 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No grease on the spindle while it was out? No WD-40 on the nut? No grease on the axle?

  • @austinwinn4548

    Different question but do you have bushings in the cast iron axle? Mine does not. When it was given to me there was tons of slop in the spindle/axle. Seems like it’s missing a bushing set but I can’t find it in the diagrams

    • @martymay831

      Did you figure this out? Mine has no bushings either but a lot of slop.

    I was going to do the poor mans steering kit on my 2020 Cub XT1. I removed the spindle cap only to find out the top mounted steering plate is welded to the top of the spindle and is non serviceable. Cub only sells an entire replacement beam axle with spindles for $200

  • @mark97213
    @mark97213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The spindle slides up and down in the knuckle, about 1/8 inch in mine as in this video. Would it hurt to add a spacer under the e-clip to take up that slack or is the gap factory intentional?

    • @phyl1283
      @phyl1283 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no bearing plate to allow installation of a bearing, but stacking two washers here would be the next best thing - and grease them occasionally

    Would a messed up spindle possibly cause the mower to run slower when the blades are engaged?

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is normal for the mower to run a little slower under load. A steering spindle would not cause that. But a bad mower deck blade spindle would cause that. Also a governor issue could also cause that or an engine with low compression. Does it maintain speed when going up a hill? To test the deck blade spindles you have to remove the belt and maybe the deck and spin the blades by hand. They should easy to spin. Note there are brakes that are applied when the deck PTO is turn off. You will have to find a way to disengage them for an accurate test.

    You didn't check the bushings inside the axle. On mine they were worn out. No surprise, made of a rubbery plastic, or something.

    • @danceswithcritters
      @danceswithcritters หลายเดือนก่อน

      The service manual actually shows bearings in the bottom of the axle. Not on mine, just cheap plastic bushings. Have no part No. for them, still looking for replacements.

    How do you get the nut lose on the bottom of the control arm...its stuck & can't loosen it to free the old spindle...help ???

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assume you are talking about the drag link connected to the bottom of the spindle. You could try an impact driver or applying heat and then spraying water on it. Otherwise, you can remove the drag link closer to the steering gear and take the spindle and drag link off together. Then replace both.
