For anybody that ACTUALLY loves snakes, our eastern, or northern as everyone seems to call it ( though i believe ive always read them as Eastern watersnakes in herp texts, just saying, but im going to go find my books, - and - it is just called our "watersnakes" no matter which locality your in, unless you have to differentiate more then one patterning such as in the south, it really doesnt matter, especially here in the northeast ) but yeah, for people who love snakes, wateranakes are very obviously a colubrid, even when they are diamonding out their head and putting on their viper show. They are a fast moving racer/garter/milk snake type of subspecies that evolved to take on the rivers for their meals. They grow very quickly when young and it is a very fast turn around from a bright new red and grey banded, bright checkered red and white bellied paint job into the blue haze and muddy-ed out blackish brown and dull look they are often seen in going into shed, but man are they gorgoues when fresh, and even when they get older and darker, the red banding and bright lips and bellies and sides, are cool looking snakes.

Yeah, they look great after a shed. The young ones are beautiful, too. Too many people mistake them for "Hot" snakes. I have always known them as Northerns but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme.

It sucks water snakes get killed because they’re confused with water moccasins, they’re so cool and there are so many different kinds. I try to educate people on water snakes when I can.

Yeah, I totally agree. They shouldnt be killing any snakes either way, but the best we can do is to patiently educate. Alsways great to hear from another herper. btw!

Hiking With Shawn had a recent video from his Snake Road (place reminds me of the snake pit from that Indiana Jones movie) series. In it, there is a great demonstration of a cottonmouth showing its mouth and fangs as a defense display.
