tbh the five song streak in maladroit of Death and destruction, slob, burndt jamb, space rock, and slave is the closest they ever got to that sound and feeing again, aside from some things on SZNZ Autumn and Winter
I saw Weezer live in the summer of 2000. They played all the good tracks from Blue and Pinkerton, and then did an Encore that was easily an album's worth of unreleased tracks. They weren't very good... and none of them ended up on the Green Album. It was cool to hear a bunch of tracks that never got released though.
There's only one album that really comes close to Pinkerton for me and it's Songs From the Black Hole. You can imagine my excitement when I saw Goat Punishment pull out "I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams" (possibly my favorite Weezer song) and "You Gave Your Love To Me Softly" last fall. For me, the definitive version is Operation: Space Opera. For those who aren't familiar, It's a fan re-recording and interpretation of the entire story. Each character has a unique voice actor and it has the polish of a finished album. Despite all of that, Pinkerton is still my favorite album of all time. I'd love to see you do a similar video on the sea opera (or lack thereof) and Ecce Homo. I feel like Ecce Homo now has the mystique that Songs From the Black Hole had in the 2000s.
I have spent an uncomfortable amount of my life trying to make a concise track listing using the story notes for the album. I have the utmost respect for anyone who can make sense of this mess.

Every time I understand Rivers more, he is human like all of us, and he has his dark side of course. Who doesn't have it? but the good thing is what we have after he finally get out of there, "Pinkerton" an album adored by almost all Weezer's fans. Tremendous work Marc. Love your analysis, it's a hard story to follow with so many drafts and Rivers voicing every character for most songs, but I think you did the best explanation I've ever seen. Though, I don't understand why Why Bother is left out of so many people's tracklists, it fits so well with the story, Jonas getting angry at Maria for cheating on her, he becomes miserable, and decides to die in the supernova. Longtime Sunshine even interpolates Why Bother, so I feel like it should be in everyone's tracklists, yet it's not.
Love the video dude, I really enjoyed how you broke down the concept of the album and I think you should consider using this same style for other concept albums. For example I would really love to hear your take on My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade or maybe Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory, another good choice would be Hot Fuss by The Killers, just to name a few. As much as I love all of your Weezer stuff I'd hate to see you typecast as exclusively "The Weezer Guy", you clearly have a lot of talent for this and I'd love to see you tackle more from different artists.

I like your interpretation of long time sunshine, but I personally disagree with it. Despite what Rivers says about Jonas volunteering, I think the more compelling narrative interpretation is about Jonas self-immolating via supernova. To me, the best ending of the story has What is This I Find leading Jonas to a breaking point. Realizing the harm he's caused the people around him, in Long Time Sunshine he strands himself without the crew knowing as a way for him to "atone" for the abuse he caused. However, while burning, the voices of the crew are still there. His death will not fix anything, it will not heal the wounds he opened. So, even in death, he is still acting selfishly. It means that there's really no way out after hurting someone. There is no good way for the story of the Betsy II to end, it's bleaker and I think makes for a more interesting narrative.
Songs From the Black Hole is a very interesting "what if" and I would highly recommend it to any fan of Pinkerton. I will say though, anyone who thinks that SFtBH would've been received better than Pinkerton (I've seen it said a few times over the years) are very much looking at it through a "grass looks greener" lens. As great as some of the songs on it are, "space themed rock opera" would totally have been doomed to fail. edit: Oh, and the coda for Long Time Sunshine is incredible

After viewing this video and listening SZNZ all the way Spring to Winter
“If I had a nickel for every Weezer concept album that ends with the main character unalive I’d had two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that’s happened twice?”
Next video: How long is Dondos big thang??
i thought "shes had a girl" was going to be the "pink triangle" of songs from the black hole, like how jonas develops feelings for laurel just to find out she was a lesbian and has had a girlfriend the whole time
Regarding Rachel Haden, she was in a really good but really overlooked all-girl rock group in the 90s, "That Dog". Definitely worth trying if you haven't already!
Idk if anyone agrees with this but I liked Operation Space Opera’s version of the tracklist personally. There’s just something about it that I can’t put into words.
