Nice synthesis. Just FYI, it's better to put your super glue on one surface and the accelerator on the other surface. If you spray the accelerator over the super glue then it starts drying instantly, you want it to dry when the surfaces are pressed together. Also, the accelerator solution you used was kinda weak because the glue should dry almost instantly when you press your two objects together.

I would be interested in mechanism of how this works.. Dimethyl toluidine is also added to methacrylate resin to somehow improve rate of polymerisation. At least with benzoyl peroxide. I have done some experiments with photoinitiators, and there it seems it is not increasing polymerisation rate, but I am not sure why. In any case please make vid of producing CA glue, I would be extremely interested to see the process.
@@namibjDerEchte with stuff I was messing around with, photoinitiators should form radicals, but papers I have read suggested that there is almost always more than one mechanism in action and we can talk statistically that radical formation is most significant. Looking again at experimental data with TPO initiator, DMT(dimethyltoluidine) decreased polymerisation rate significantly only when added in excess (4%) 1% and 0.5% had almost no measurable effect but did not increase the rate. Same experiment but with TEA (triethylamine) gave pretty much same figures. Similar experiment with benzil dimethyl ketal as initiator showed that TEA increased polymerisation rate significantly at 0.5% concentration, but there I have sample size of 1 and testing device was quite iffy in build quality, sooo I would need to repeat whole experiment to speak with any confidence... Also no data for DMT on this experiment
Hi my guys; there are a couple of polymerisation mechanisms for acrylates. With photoinitiators you tend to make radicals but tertiary amines are good bases so they could initiate an anionic polymerisation because the cyanoacrylate anion is pretty stable. Dimethyl toluidine could actually absorb UV light and so reduce efficiency of photoinitiation. But I'm not 100% on that one, you'd have to check the absorption spectrum.

Great stuff! Thanks for the entertaining and educating video, Chemiolis!:) My 2 cents and girlsplaining: Usually (f.e. with wood or your cardboard) you apply the super glue on one part and the activator on the other, the mating part. Makes sense, or? At least in practical use, where you actually want to glue something together and not instantly "deactivate" the function of your glue before it can do its job ... hehehe:)))
Instead of acetone, heptane can used as the solvent for the dimethyltoluidine. At least I think so - the activator I have is (I think) dimethyltoluidine in heptane. Also, 12:12 - The problem with doing it like that is that you already instantly hardened the super glue before you had placed the cardboard together. Place them together first, then wet the whole thing with activator.
I know nothing about chemistry and get lost pretty much straight away but for some reason these types of videos are interesting to watch . Biggest question is how did they and how long did it take them to figure these procedures and order of steps out
Usually i adjust the gain of my voice over audio to increase a few dB and make it louder, unfortunately i was in a hurry and forgot about it this time!
It’s supposed to work for every type of cyanoacrylate glue. I think it can be especially handy when the formulation has thickening agent that make the curing slower. The one i used was pure ethylcyanoacrylate.
i really like to use a dilute bicarb solution as an activator, it works like a charm, however u have to drip it on the side and contact ur glue sideways to ensure proper adhesion. But from experience it tends to polymerize almost instantly

lol this is interestingly close to kevlar synthesis. para aromatic bonds. industreally they use 1,4-phenylene-diamine (para-phenylenediamine) with terephthaloyl chloride to yield Kevlar polymer all those hydrogren bonds combined with strong amide bonds, all in a super linear structure coz u start with terephthaloyl di chloride, (1,4 acyl benzine?). I wonder what polymer you would get if instead of starting with 100% para bonding sites you had like 90% para and 10% ortho. you know like some reaction where the reactant was being formed slowly and so kinetically you would have some ortho and some para product instead of the thermal (nonsteric?) product of all para. i bet you would have some kind of kevlar that is also stretchy/springy. right now the only elastic kevlar i know of is when they take like 80% kevlar and mix it with 20% nylon/other elastic fiber which imo ruins a lot of the strength/abrasion/heat protection properties of it. like come on dupont just make a new polymer instead of suing other people for patent infringement :p (btw i think kevlar went off patent like a few years ago and u can buy for ultra cheap now... ~5$/sqmeter bulk)
