I remember cutting school as a kid and going to FAO Schwarz when they had the big TV screens with all the game consoles that you could play. Those were some of the Fondest Memories I have of the 80s

This store has definitely filled my “Toys R Us Times Square” hole in my heart! Thank Goodness it’s still open.

I miss FAO Schwartz too. One day I would like to see them make a comeback with the toys still being made now. We use to have one at Lenox mall in Atlanta, Georgia.

I miss the one in San Francisco. My parents would take my brother and I as kids. We were poor so we just went to go look but every once in a blue moon, our parents would give us a $20 and even though it was not much, we were so happy knowing we bought a toy from FAO Schwarz.

Ravensburger, Schleich and Steiff are german companies.
Ravensburger makes mainly puzzles and tebletop games.
Steiff has been around for about as long as Teddybears exist, although they started with an elephant needlepillow.
The Story goes that Margarethe Steiff made nail pillows in the shape of elephants to sell. Children liked and bought them as toys, so thats how the stuffed animal company Steiff started.
Her nephew who took over the company created his own Stuffed-bear at the same time when the Teddy Bear was created in the US.

I spent a good part of my childhood at the 5th Avenue location. I'm a native NYer that still lives in Queens. I'm glad that FAO was able to re-emerge but there is a magical touch to that original location that no one can replicate. Also I saw there was a location inside LAX (I'm vacationing in LA this weekend) but at the time of my arrival, it was closed. It also looked very small. Can anyone explain what's up with that?

    • @thefunparent
