I know I played tetris a few times as a kid but never really sat down and like, played it. Come 2015, I’m an adult that’s been actively collecting video games for about a year and a half. I finally came across a gameboy copy of tetris. Throw it in my Gameboy advance, start playing, and would you look at that, it’s still a great game! Some time later, I get a phone call from my then girlfriend asking where I was? I had planned on picking her up for a date and was an hour late. In 2019 I got a half sleeve tattoo of tetris blocks on my arm. It’s one of my favorite games.
glenn, you forgot the best part of 'new tetris'. the way you can organize 4 blocks to create large silver and gold blocks to multiply line totals. i have spent hours playing new tetris against friends, and we spent more time trying to create those blocks because, almost always, who ever created the most silver and gold blocks would win. and it added a new tactic to the game.
Good point although this isn’t a review it’s more of an overview - can’t remember if I covered that in the actual review I did if the game but I’d be surprised if I didn’t
@@n64glennplant i went and watched that video immediately after i made this comment. you certainly did touch on that aspect of that game. keep up the great videos!
My first Tetris was the Windows 3.1 version (though I don’t remember what operating system we had). I remember my parents playing it before I was old enough to understand how it worked. 20+ years later, it’s the most wonderful thing I’ve found on the Internet Archive.
First experience with Tetris, was actually the Sega version of it called Columns, on the Sega Game Gear. So many memories of my brother and I trying to beat our high scores on it. The music and sound effects still resonate with me
My first ever experience with video games at all was Tetris & Dr. Mario for the SNES, before I could even comprehend what a video game was as a toddler. Its music alone resonates with me to this very day. ^-^
As a little kid, it was tetris on NES and gameboy. Didnt like thr snes version and thougt id never like another tetris but the original. Got thr new tetris on xmas and didnt think much of it. But a year or two later my friends and I all got hooked and were battling for high scores which were creepin up to 3000 lines. It also has a 3 minute sprint mode which is a great mode for a quick gaming session.
I played the original gameboy tetris on lunch break when working nigh shift...very long lunch breaks especially when playing with the link up to another gb. Also loved Dr Mario... Klax..and columns 3 at the arcade on a massive screen. Tetris is still the original super addictive puzzler that all others aspire to.
So many of us of a general age category must have similar shared memories of playing Tetris on Christmas Day on a newly acquired Gameboy. That version was so definitive for me that I never bothered with a version on N64 until New Tetris, it's excellent, bangin' soundtrack too
That Sony Trinitron really takes me back. I bought one at the same time I bought my N64 in '98 and I'm always on the lookout for another one at my local second hand shops.
I really like Tetrisphere, I wish they released a similar game on 3DS, it would have been very impressive with stereoscopic 3D. But well, the N64 is still there, waiting to be played.
I think I first played Tetris on GameBoy Color. I can't think of any version of Tetris that's outright definitive for me, each one of them has their own quirks that make them worth playing.
@@n64glennplant I think it's the same as GB Tetris, only in color and with different music, it'd be mostly a personal preference thing like most Tetris games.
Had the black GB with pink lettering from BlockBuster, used to play Tetris and DKL2 at student house of my gf who would become my fiancée, plugged in for power with a cable I had to hold a certain way against the GB for it to work, was on my best Tetris run while ignoring a request to do...something, who knows, when said love of my life unplugs the GB at the wall.
Tetrisphere is one of those games I played a ton of back when it was new, but thinking of or seeing footage of it after not playing it for almost two decades, it looks way more complicated than I’m sure it is.
The game isn't as complicated as this footage could make you believe. At multiple times he could draw a piece away from the ground to free the robot or to initiate a combo, but he didn't.
My first Tetris game (oficial, at least, not counting those knock off GameBoys you would get at a market for $1) was probably Magical Tetris. And I quite liked it tbh, played it a lot, even finished the story. My biggest disappointments with the game were: -Lack of 4Ps Multiplayer -No unlock able chars, as far as I know, even though you fight them in the story mode. One other note, although I did not own Tetrisphere during its heyday, I have the "Prophetic" OST (the same theme you used in this vid as well, Glenn) on my phone and listen to it ever so often, you guys should check it out!
Disney Magical Tetris should be something I could enjoy on N64. I wasn't a big Tetris-Fan as a Kid, cos I found that boring on Gameboy. After playin' Puyo Puyo Tetris online, I'm a big fan of it. Tetris 64 with the Biosensor, Japan only, Lee from Pug Hoof Gaming showed this up on his Channel. But I found that pretty interesting to get a 1 on 1 with Tetris 64 with other players and everyone got a pulse sensor😃 Tetrisphere and the new Tetris didn't really were my cup of tea, same on wetrix🙂
I recommend watching the Tetris world championship if you want more Tetris. Look for any match that has Jonas, or Green Tea, or Koryon. Those three players in particular have very exciting matches.
I'm a bit of a Tetris nerd - can't resist picking Tetris games up for my different consoles so I have all 4 of these. My first experience with tetris was the version by Mirrorsoft on a UK 8bit computer called the Amstrad CPC464. It was OK but the control was a bit twitchy. I got really bitten by it when I played it on Gameboy, as did my wife who doesn't play many games. Played a lot of the Microsoft version too which was part of their Windows entertainment packs. Re N64 Tetris, Tetris64 is a bit dull in its presentation but it's multiplayer mode is interesting. It supports up to 4 players and has a unique garbage system that lets you deal out garbage attacks 1 line at a time to your opponents using 3 of the camera buttons - letting you choose who and how to attack. The big Giga Tetris mode is enjoyable too because of the way the pieces break up when a line is formed - it plays like Cascade mode in modern Tetris games. Tetris 64 's option mode is interesting too as it lets you toggle wall kicks and change the rotation system which was quite far reaching back then. Magical Tetris is under-rated - I only got it later on. It's a good unique take on the formula and the Capcom soundtrack is nice. I find it hard to look past the Disney branding but there's a solid tactical game beneath that. New Tetris is still pick of the bunch with that Voss soundtracl and the excellent multiplayer modes. Tetrisphere isn't a Tetris game but I can see why it's in the list - I picked it up later too but was surprised how addictive I found it - well overdue a remake.
My 1st version of tetris for Best of Windows Entertainment Pack on Windows 3.1. I was too little at the time though, I thought I was meant to build shapes.
@@n64glennplant Can't remember. It was the early days of the internet but I remember checking for the record and was literal millions ahead of the world record. I never posted on the site though.
The first time I ever played Tetris was on the Amiga when I got a copy of the official version from Spectrum Holobyte. I knew of Tetris, I'd just never played it until then. Eventually, I played all the variations on the Amiga, Weltris was OK. Super Tetris with bombs was kind of fun. I liked the idea of Block Out, but the game itself didn't hold my interest for long. Since then, I've played Tetris on dozens of systems. I've play it every so often, but usually only a couple games and then I don't touch it for months.
I first played Tetris in the early 1990s on a Game Boy. It was pretty basic but it was fun. I played Tetris 2 on the NES in the mid 1990s and didn't like it. Since then, I'd say my favorite Tetris game on a console is The New Tetris on the N64. Its soundtrack is amazing and it's a blast to play with friends. I've played a few other Tetris games on other systems (Fetris is one on the C64 that has great music, and in terms of gameplay, it beats the official Tetris release on the C64), but The New Tetris is the best to me. Tetris 99 on the Switch is fun, but I feel like it's mostly luck until you get down to maybe the last 20 or 25 players. Then, it's a combination of a little bit of skill with a lot of luck since the pieces fall quickly. Also, one thing to note is that, at least for me, if you're going to play Tetris 99, use the Joy-Cons instead of a Pro controller. With the Pro controller, it's too easy to inadvertently drop a piece to the bottom right away. Another really good Tetris game is Tetris DS on... well, the Nintendo DS. It has a few different ways to play Tetris and they're all pretty fun. Great video, as always, Glenn! Thank you!
@@n64glennplant There's some fun to be had, but as I mentioned, there's a bunch of luck and only a little bit of skill involved. I haven't played it in a while. However, I've only won a match one time. I've had some top 10 and 5 finishes, but only had 1 victory. I suppose it's better than no victories, right?
Japanese gamers are quite used to seeing a lot of English text in their games. In fact, they expect it to be there, it adds an exotic atmosphere and has been there since the medium started in the US. For example they could have used Kanji and called the Bio-Sensor, something like 生物検知器. But they chose to call it Baio Sensa because that sounds more interesting, novel and fashionable to use a western sounding word. Most Japanese people can muddle through English menus after spending 8 or so years studying English at school. Conversation is another ball game however.
New Tetris soundtrack is legendary, magical Tetris was disappointing to me on the n64 only because there was no 4 player support and the gbc version had an rpg element to it that the n64 one lacked.
My first Tetris was the arcade version from 1988-ish. Always disappointed me that was never ported home. Caught up in the whole Tetris copyright mess I assume.
We all took our gameboys to school and out and about when hanging out with friends question for you what's your highest score how many lines have u got I think I hit 138 lines as my highest but I know theres many higher than me tetris in french class using the text book standing up open with gameboy inside great memories 1990s 🤣
Magical Tetris Challenge was actually Arcade -game, that is also compatible with N64 (well with flash cardridge, anyway). I didn't like the game. Tetris 64 seems worse. Due reasons unkown, i'm a master player of hypnotic Tetrisphere, though i would like to to play this original Jaguar-version Phear, th-cam.com/video/o457jl9zZbs/w-d-xo.html this N64-version is still the best 3D -version of Tetris. The New Tetris is best TV-console version of classic Tetris ever made. It also has most impressive & unique soundtrack than any other N64 game. As for memories, GB -version was included with the handheld so naturally it was most played GameBoy -game. Those unpacking moments bring back a lot of warm memories. Solid playability made it better than NES -version. I remember how exciting two player link -cable mode was, as you did not saw what your friend did, but you sure were on trouble when he/she did better than you.
I don’t mean to sound rude, but didn’t _The New Tetris_ become the benchmark for future games of the franchise? People who have played the game on modern hardware may say the reverse about the momenta of the pieces in the NES, SNES, Game Boy, etc. versions.
The biosensor commentary made me laugh. I was imagining someone chugging redbulls just to get some sort of reaction from it. I don't get the point of it as an add on, if the only compatible game was tetris, did they have future plans for it? Or did they go out of business before they could really do something cool with it?
I think other devs perhaps didn’t want to license it as I think the studio also owned the tech rights to it. One day I think I should do a video where I talk about games I think it would have worked well in
This was the only game my mother played and I also saw other adults playing it. So for me it was a bit of "adult" game (aka serious aka boring) so I never got into it that much. I only ever had it on the gameboy.

@@n64glennplant it’s a lot of fun! I also have it on the series x, looks great. It’s kinda therapeutic. My go to tetris is tetris 99 on Marathon mode.
glenn, you forgot the best part of 'new tetris'. the way you can organize 4 blocks to create large silver and gold blocks to multiply line totals. i have spent hours playing new tetris against friends, and we spent more time trying to create those blocks because, almost always, who ever created the most silver and gold blocks would win. and it added a new tactic to the game.
@@n64glennplant you absolutely didn’t cover it - it’s what makes this game the best version of Tetris of all time
My first Tetris was the Windows 3.1 version (though I don’t remember what operating system we had).
The music and sound effects still resonate with me
See I was never that into columns myself but I remember having it on one of those 3 in one carts on the mega drive
My first ever experience with video games at all was Tetris & Dr. Mario for the SNES, before I could even comprehend what a video game was as a toddler. Its music alone resonates with me to this very day. ^-^
What a cool memory to have
@@n64glennplant And after watching this, I now super wanna get Tetrisphere for the N64. The music there does sound great!
@@thevgmlover looking at your name you’d 💯 love it
As a little kid, it was tetris on NES and gameboy.
Tetris on gameboy was my first taste, so addicting
I played the original gameboy tetris on lunch break when working nigh shift...very long lunch breaks especially when playing with the link up to another gb. Also loved Dr Mario... Klax..and columns 3 at the arcade on a massive screen. Tetris is still the original super addictive puzzler that all others aspire to.
Ah man link up consoles were awesome hey!
So many of us of a general age category must have similar shared memories of playing Tetris on Christmas Day on a newly acquired Gameboy. That version was so definitive for me that I never bothered with a version on N64 until New Tetris, it's excellent, bangin' soundtrack too
We’re all getting old Mike
I'm going research a bit about why humans are fascinated by blocks.(Minecraft and Tetris are the best examples)
Lego
Jenga
Tetrisphere might have been the best Jaguar game. Instead it might not be the best N64 game but it's insanely addicting and fun.
Amen to that - would have liked to see what the jag version would have been like
i remember playing dr. mario for hours . that was my intro. used to play it against my dad.
That Sony Trinitron really takes me back. I bought one at the same time I bought my N64 in '98 and I'm always on the lookout for another one at my local second hand shops.
I’d like a nice b&o beovision ✌️
I really like Tetrisphere, I wish they released a similar game on 3DS, it would have been very impressive with stereoscopic 3D. But well, the N64 is still there, waiting to be played.
Yeah that’s true I suppose but it’s long overdue a sequel
I liked The New Tetris. Haven't tried Tetrisphere, but now I want to.
Awesome review, as usual.
You should and while it’s still cheap to get!
First got into Tetris on the gameboy like many others. I still played quite a bit of Tetris recently with 99.
Still need to try that myself if I get a switch
I think I first played Tetris on GameBoy Color. I can't think of any version of Tetris that's outright definitive for me, each one of them has their own quirks that make them worth playing.
I don’t think I’ve played that one, never got into gbc I went from gb to advance
@@n64glennplant I think it's the same as GB Tetris, only in color and with different music, it'd be mostly a personal preference thing like most Tetris games.
Never been so early to one of your videos. Should be a good one.
Thanks Luis!
Cool I never saw that one so I’ll need to go find a pic now
Tetrisphere is one of those games I played a ton of back when it was new, but thinking of or seeing footage of it after not playing it for almost two decades, it looks way more complicated than I’m sure it is.
Haha I’m sure you’d pick it up again in minutes
The game isn't as complicated as this footage could make you believe. At multiple times he could draw a piece away from the ground to free the robot or to initiate a combo, but he didn't.
I’ve commented this before, but my mom, who hated video games, was legitimately addicted to Tetrisphere. One of my fondest memories of my Mom
Such a cool and random game - must be something about women and Tetris hey!
Love the PVM-2030 in the video! I’ve got one myself that I use for my RGB modded N64 🤙🏼📺
Great video Glenn, keep em up :) 👍
Thanks Cecil
My first Tetris game (oficial, at least, not counting those knock off GameBoys you would get at a market for $1) was probably Magical Tetris. And I quite liked it tbh, played it a lot, even finished the story.
My biggest disappointments with the game were:
-Lack of 4Ps Multiplayer
-No unlock able chars, as far as I know, even though you fight them in the story mode.
One other note, although I did not own Tetrisphere during its heyday, I have the "Prophetic" OST (the same theme you used in this vid as well, Glenn) on my phone and listen to it ever so often, you guys should check it out!
Tetris, how can such a simple concept be so addicting?
I know right
Disney Magical Tetris should be something I could enjoy on N64.
It’s quite a nice one to pick up and just play through the story mode at least
I recommend watching the Tetris world championship if you want more Tetris. Look for any match that has Jonas, or Green Tea, or Koryon. Those three players in particular have very exciting matches.
Tetris is so super addictive my mom use to play kablooy on SNES
I don’t know that I’ll have to look it ip
@@n64glennplant it is a puzzle game too
I laughed at the last comment as I was carefully judging your every move when hearing it. You got me haha
Knew it!!!!
I really like the background music.
Which one?
@@n64glennplant The one at the start, the GB Tetris one.
My 1st version of tetris for Best of Windows Entertainment Pack on Windows 3.1. I was too little at the time though, I thought I was meant to build shapes.
Tetrisphere was a banging game
Awesome ain’t it
Magical Tetris Challenge would be my favourite Tetris if it wasn't for the fact that Puyo Puyo Tetris exists.
Good shout - That ones super popular
I had the world record on Tetrisphere back in the day.
Cool on which website?
Thank you!
If I eventually get a switch I’ll be sure to check out Tetris 99 as it looks kinda fun
Never heard of Tetris 64 until now.
Probably for the best 😂
Japanese gamers are quite used to seeing a lot of English text in their games. In fact, they expect it to be there, it adds an exotic atmosphere and has been there since the medium started in the US.
For example they could have used Kanji and called the Bio-Sensor, something like 生物検知器. But they chose to call it Baio Sensa because that sounds more interesting, novel and fashionable to use a western sounding word.
Most Japanese people can muddle through English menus after spending 8 or so years studying English at school. Conversation is another ball game however.
In my time in Japan I came across maybe 3 people who could hold a conversation in English. Shame that my Japanese is pretty much non existent too
The new Tetris has the best soundtrack on the system
It’s 🔥 right! 🎼
New Tetris soundtrack is legendary, magical Tetris was disappointing to me on the n64 only because there was no 4 player support and the gbc version had an rpg element to it that the n64 one lacked.
I have Tetris 64 and the Bio-Sensor it's pretty unique. I have it on my shelf with my Rez Vibrstor, lol
I still have Tetris Classic on my phone!
I remember when it was a stupid price of like £15 on iOS App Store
Tetris on Gameboy is my first video games
What a time that was hey
My first Tetris was the arcade version from 1988-ish. Always disappointed me that was never ported home. Caught up in the whole Tetris copyright mess I assume.
"Help Mickey, the Keyblade is gone!"
"No problem Sora, I gotcha covered, ho-ho!"
"Why do I hear Russian music?"
That’s over my head, not a KH gamer/fan personally
We all took our gameboys to school and out and about when hanging out with friends question for you what's your highest score how many lines have u got I think I hit 138 lines as my highest but I know theres many higher than me tetris in french class using the text book standing up open with gameboy inside great memories 1990s 🤣
Haha that’s cool, no idea what my record is to be honest
BOOM! TETRIS FOR GLENN!
They’re a rarity for how badly I play these days lol
A sony pvm on the intro? who had one of them!
I think I had a trinitron back then
Tetrisphere is great. It's a shame it's not more well known.
InB4 video gets removed by the Tetris Mafia.
Haha
Tetrisphere!
Great one isn’t it
What was the secret immortality? Rand Or something?
?
Tetris is the best game ever!
Magical Tetris Challenge was actually Arcade -game, that is also compatible with N64 (well with flash cardridge, anyway). I didn't like the game. Tetris 64 seems worse.
Due reasons unkown, i'm a master player of hypnotic Tetrisphere, though i would like to to play this original Jaguar-version Phear,
th-cam.com/video/o457jl9zZbs/w-d-xo.html
this N64-version is still the best 3D -version of Tetris.
People who have played the game on modern hardware may say the reverse about the momenta of the pieces in the NES, SNES, Game Boy, etc. versions.
Don’t worry you weren’t rude, very articulate and well composed reply which is appreciated 😁
One day I think I should do a video where I talk about games I think it would have worked well in
Tetris is fun
Amen to that
This was the only game my mother played and I also saw other adults playing it. So for me it was a bit of "adult" game (aka serious aka boring) so I never got into it that much. I only ever had it on the gameboy.
Wouldnt pokemon puzzle league be like tetris?
It’s same style in a way but these games had license to use the Tetris name by the Tetris company
I think if it was the SNES version (Tetris Attack) it would count.
damn video ended
Dang it!
I'm terrible at tetrisn
It takes practice
the real reason i don't like the n64 no good tetris and no TMNT although pokemon puzzle league is killer
No good Tetris? It has some of the best ones on any system?
