  • Tal Mitnick is a courageous 18-year-old Israeli citizen who was jailed after refusing to serve in the army - in protest at the war on Gaza, and the oppression of the Palestinian people.
Here he tells me absolutely shocking truths - but also explains why there is hope.

After October 7th I noticed a lot of young leftists in the uk and the us say “Well why aren’t these soldiers just objecting and refusing to fight?”. A lot of these people saying these things would never even dare to do something like that. In Israeli society this is a big deal. Refusing to serve endangers your life, your employment opportunities and important relationships with friends and family. This is a serious choice and should be properly commended. We as outsiders have a woefully limited understanding of the scope of indoctrination Israeli citizens experience I think.

But in the Vietnam era, many young Americans also faced harsh penalties for refusing to serve - although PM Pierre Trudeau opening the Canadian border and canadian citizenship to draft-refusers was really helpful. Many leftist Canadians today (like Naomi Klein) are the children of US draft refusers.
I think the problem is that Israelis are a far more conservative and nationalist and racist than even Americans were in the 1960s. People who do not support ethnic cleansing of Palestinians are a tiny minority.

Tal Mitnick is just eighteen years old. But the thoughtfulness with which he responds to questions, how deliberate he is with his answers, is beyond what most adults do. There's a depth to him. There's no denying his wisdom. I cannot fathom how scary it must be to stand apart from his own community; the immense pressure he must feel to conform. He is an outstanding example of courage. I wish him the very best in his struggle.

I hope no harm / punishment comes to this brave young man after candidly and courageously talking about what’s going on in Israel. I am sure there are a lot more Israelis who think like him but haven’t been able to tell anyone for fear of being shunned by their families and society. Thank you Owen for giving people like him a platform. ❤️
