    'Umber Brown' it's called. One of my favorite loco liveries, I think it suits these quite well, but it looks stunning on their H2s, one of which is being replicated at Bluebell!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ah yes that's right! Yeah it's very odd, but a lovely livery nonetheless! I don't think I've seen an H2, but I'll definitely google it!
      All the best,
      Sam :)

      It's one of my favorites, brown is underused on locomotives!
      The Atlantic in the artwork is an H2 I believe. The one at Bluebell is being built using a C1 boiler and is mostly complete.

    Great video Sam. By the way two things I want to tell you.
    1. Thomas is based off of the 2nd version of the E2 with some modifications (EG- wheel arches)
    2. The E2 was only chosen because it had an image on stand-by when original illustrator Reginald panne had to draw the locomotive. The original Thomas prototype was a J50.

    Another good one Sam. Loved seeing an older model reviewed. 1979 will be the correct date of manufacture as it came out that year. I think it lasted to 81 then in 82 it came out in Southern Olive Green. It was only like that for a few years before the tooling was altered to become Thomas in about 84/85. I think the late 70s early 80s were Hornby at it's best. The chassis was developed specially to get the motor forward and allow cab detail. Around the same time Hornby brought out their Jinty (1978) , open cab pannier (1980) and J52 (1981) . By that time Hornby were in competition with Mainline and Airfix which were bringing out better detailed models.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Russell Benton Thanks very much for the comment and the info mate - you're probably right too with saying 70s/80s were Hornby's best years - although I was never a fan of the tender driven stuff! I'd love to try and get one of the green E2s as well!
      Cheers mate,
      Sam :)

      Hornby also made them in the black Southern 103 livery, and BR black with the lion on the side of the tank, but these don't look as good in black after you've seen them in brown or green.
      That also makes sense as the real ones looked worse in the all black, as if BR didn't care what they looked like and just wanted to throw paint on and get them back out.

    A lot of its pulling power issues likely stem not from the lack of weight, but the fact that she's only four wheel drive.
    Not sure if you even noticed it at the time, but the center drivers are undersized significantly. Now, I'm sure this was done for tight curve performance, but that's gonna nip its pulling power hard.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate, yes that is true - in fact all of the Tri-ang and early Hornby engines were like this - except this model (and others from the same era) had very shiny metal tyres, which never gripped the track as well as the older cast metal wheels did - and so you don't get too much traction with any of these (the Halls, 2MTs, N15 and Scotsman models from the same era were all the same too!)
      Cheers,
      Sam :)

      Yeah, I’m actually using the design you’ve got to make a diesel-electric E2 class tank engine. There is a miniature railway called the Saltburn Miniature Railway. They have diesel powered A3 and A4 Pacifics.

      Moving the whistle was an actual modification I think BR had to do for tunnel clearance at some point. The engineers liked it too, since it was really loud inside the cab when it was on the cab, and putting it next to the safety valve improved that a lot.

      There was actually one thing I really appreciated about the animated version. They made it so you could see the piston and valve linkages when you saw the engines from in front or behind or beneath.
      I'm american, and the concept of inside pistons was completely unknown to me until I went down the research rabbit hole of how British engines worked without having visible cylinders. It's a neat and elegant layout, but pretty much all American engines have the cylinders on the outside.
      Apparently we had a few three cylinder engines (2 outside and one in the center), but space and power output were not really as big of a concern as having enough drive wheels was, so there were more gigantic engines out here with 8, 10, 12, or 16 drive wheels.

    Sam fun fact: the E2s never wore the brown livery in the early LBSCR days it's thanks to HORNBY that mislead a lot of people to believe the brown is what the E2s wore 2nd. 110 is going to mess up the railway books due to their already being a 110 e1 is the isle of whight (sorry for my vocabulary I forgot how to spell the island) and I keep checking the website for the E2 rebuild and there hasn't been a update since the project began and I think someone confrimed the project was cancelled a couple years ago I have to check later on but the person running the site made a train simulator model for the E2 you need to check the model out he also made the 1st railway series E2 Thomas it looks very good so check it out

    I just bought one of these, and I'm really excited for it to arrive. My interest in trains started between the Disneyland railroad that I rode on many times, and Thomas, and it's so cool to see a model of the same type as Thomas, but with much more detail because of being modeled from a real engine.
    7:04 is actually part of the braking system. The E2 had a really powerful air brake system, which was actually one of the complaints about that type. The brakes were strong enough to stop the engine so fast that it would break couplings if the driver was too aggressive with it. I personally think that's a reason to complain about the antiquated couplings (unchanged from 1913 to the 1960s, really British Railways???), not a reason to complain about the brakes, but that's just me.
    10:12 ironic, as the real E2 was a very strong engine. I think it had over 21,000 lbs of pulling power. It just burned through coal and water really fast.
    Edit: my loco showed up, and I have a couple of interesting details:
    3:33 that number isn't the year. I can tell because the instructions with my loco have 0679 there, rather than 1979, and I doubt Hornby was making this model 1,345 years ago. :-) It might the be engine serial number though. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    10:12 This loco has an interesting feature in the form of magnetic driving wheels. It's interesting because if I lift it off of track that isn't fastened down, the loco will try and take the track off the ground with it! It's mentioned in the instructions as a way to make up for the loco being so light, but it only works if you use steel track, rather than brass or nickel silver.

    If you add a drop of oil to the fabric pads at either end of the motor armature of the x.03 and x.04 motors it can make them run much quieter. I have found the pannier tank can be made to run almost silently. It does depend from loco to loco however as the body basically becomes a sound box like a guitar.

    Fun fact: if you look up Hornby's prototype Thomas model for their magazine teaser (with the very first illustration-style face) you will see the cobbled-together extended tanks and the interesting chimney shape of this model.

    Hi Sam,
    I respect your opinion about the E2's,
    but they were heavy going on water, underpowered and rubbish at pulling passenger trains above walking pace.
    The cab was absoloutely tiny, which made working with one of theese a pain. They were a complete failure.

      @@SamsTrains there are a couple of videos detailing their history, and all of their shortcomings and the things they did really well.
      They were actually not weak engines at all, having quite a bit more tractive power than other engines their size, but they burned through coal and water really fast. A lot of people say they have small cold bunkers, but they actually had the same size coal bunkers as several larger engines did, and those larger engines did not have it a problem with that small coal capacity. The E2 just burned through it faster.
      Ultimately, it's a pretty nice type of "failure" to have them in service for 46 to 50 years. I think he shortest lived one was LBSC 107 / SR 2107 / BR 32107, which was built in 1915, and the first to be retired in 1961.

    The second series E2 is most likely Thomas's E2 as Thomas has the extended side tanks and the second series E2 had the extended side tanks as well, the first series E2s did not have the extended side tanks. As the LB&SCR E2 Class Wiki says the second series design was judged to be a success with the issue of inadequate supply of water, that lead to a further order of 5 E2s being given extended side tanks something Thomas has, Thomas also has wheel wells and the real E2s did not have wheel wells.

    • @beckyjohnson6798
      @beckyjohnson6798 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So that means that Thomas is a second series E2 with wheel wells.

    • @AlexandarHullRichter
      @AlexandarHullRichter หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@beckyjohnson6798 one of the complaints about the real E2 engines was that they were very rough riding at speed, and that was potentially due to an imbalance between wheel size and cylinder size.
      There's a theory that Thomas was modified to have larger wheels to make him run smoother, hence the wheel arches.

    Actually, the prototype livery on the model is kind of accurate…
    Around the era when the E2’s were built, the LBSC’s main livery was an umber brown with gold lining, most associated with their passenger engines. A couple E2’s were trialed for push-pull passenger service (an experiment which wasn’t that successful) and were given the umber brown livery but this was in 1914, the year before the second batch of E2’s with the extended side tanks were built

      @@SCB-SCCS No.108 can't be Thomas. Thomas arrived on Sodor in 1915 and No.108 was built in 1916. He most likely would've been No.105 also built in 1915 and was the first member of the E2s with the extended side tanks, so he would've been sent to Sodor shortly after being built. Since the LBSC quietly sold Thomas off, most likely a duplicate No.105 would've been built to replace Thomas' slot on the mainland. Hey Sam'sTrains, I have a cool suggestion, have you tried painting your locomotives? ☺
      You should make a video about how to paint a locomotive. ☺
      P.S. You could try to put a number on your locomotives. ☺

      Hey Sam'sTrains, I also have another suggestion, have you tried turning a locomotive into a push along toy? ☺

    £11.98 in 70's would be about £120 now - in such good condition, £20 for an 8/10 engine seems fantastic value! (especially when chimney is included! Good review.
