I think you need to repeat this experiment with strangers. The gut instinct is being skewed by their perceived knowledge of the individual people performing the tasks. If they didn’t know the people there would be no ability to predict as opposed to guess
This is fun but its definitely just guessing. Especially telling them at the start they did a video for each decision its just a guess which vid they show.
My thoughts to. They should redo this experiment with strangers or they should do something completely else where you don't just guess between 2 answers.
Filming both options and then asking them to choose based on their gut instinct of personal knowledge of that person negates the effects of the experiment. It is based on the random choice of which video was presented to them, not their gut instinct of what they know about each subject of the videos.
so true. also i think it should have been random clips instead of the crew because they already know them and can respond based on assumptions instead of their gut instinct in that moment
I think this was flawed because of the fact that you did do both options. If everyone went in knowing they would only have one chance to do one of the two options it would have been better. Like you only have one chance to put the axe in the head thats what you're going to do.
Not to burst anyone bubble (I love the show), but isn’t this “experiment” obsolete because not only are the people in the video told what to do (it’s not their actual choice) but they also do both choices.
How does that matter? In the lead-up, the person already knows what they're going to do, so (according to the hypothesis), any clues for the subconscious mind to pick up on are going to be present.
The irony of the bottle round was that Link changed his answer instead of going with his first gut instinct answer, which is what we've been telling him to stop doing for years 🤣
introducing options means there is no "gut instinct" at play - since you're looking for reasons to support one or the other - simply guessing or looking for logical outputs of the situation. gut instinct should be a simple "What happens next (based on information you see and/or have)"
This makes sense! I imagine that’s why in the original experiment the outcomes were only 1) drink or 2) pour. There is no consideration of what may be more interesting, so the gut instinct may be stronger. There aren’t any stakes
I agree with that. It does make you look for clues as to what they might do, I felt that the options did take away gut instinct as well. Now, if you were presented with a scene and you were asked what the person might do and then you answered with your own idea, I think that would be more of a test of gut instinct
They were trying to make it more fun but it tainted the experiment. I think they needed to pick either do something silly or accurately run the experiment. (In the later case, we would all still watch b/c Rhett and Link by themselves is entertaining.)
And that's why scientific studies are conducted by experts... they just didn't think this through, no method no reason no significant outcome- it could have been such a cool video
16:30 Let's take a moment to appreciate all those watching who don't understand that reference and are very confused as to why Link just said that so casually
I watch the video often because watching Dan continually get more and more disheartened and Arin get happier and happier is so unbelievably funny to me.
Link convincing himself that his gut response was actually his brain to justify switching his answer to what was actually his brain’s reasoning all along was a saga.
I think was Link was horrified of disagreeing with Rhett on this episode. He seemed to be more concerned about aligning with Rhett than trying to get the right answer
Honestly, I think these would've been better if you didn't have the video before they made their choice. You can show it after of course, to confirm whether they're right, but personally, I chose before the video every time and that gut reaction was way faster and I think more accurate.
I dont think that having two takes of each situation you can really predict the scenerios that well... your gut may tell you the option based on individual. Just my 2 cents
I really appreciate Rhett mentioning therapy in a very casual way! It helps break the stigma that men can't/shouldn't be emotional and should deal with their emotions themselves. Hopefully this made at least one male identifying person, or really anyone realize that therapy is a normal, healthy thing that you shouldn't be ashamed of!
Looking at this experiment through a scientific view there are a lot of flaws going into how the experiment was conducted. That being said, if it were conducted in that way it wouldn't have been as entertaining.
hm, interesting. I got all of them right and felt pretty certain about all of them except for the bottle. i wonder if the fact that Rhett and Link personally know the subjects influenced their decisions.
When Link switched his answer from break to tuck, I was his guts changing his answer. He was thinking tuck but his guts changed the answer. He got it reversed.
I agree that they needed to do this with strangers because they’re using solely their knowledge of the staffs’ personality to make their guesses. I also feel like having the crew do fake outs negatively impacts the experiment and makes it pretty much impossible to go on gut instinct
I think they should've made buttons for that (or anything other than speaking... also maybe in a way they can't see each other), Link is always a few milliseconds behind and instinctively tries to copy Rhett, makes this experiment flawed, but I think the idea is really nice for more episodes and I'd love to see more!

This is the comment i came looking for.
And without options until the end
I believe that's the point
My thoughts to.
They should redo this experiment with strangers or they should do something completely else where you don't just guess between 2 answers.
Should have given the options after the clip, it’s hard to test “gut instinct” when you spend the whole clip looking for clues.
ooh thats a good idea
yeah this wasn't scientific at all...but then again this show is supposed to be funny not accurate
True, I didn't think of that!
Rhett isn't using his gut in this whole episode, he's just looking for clues as to what people are going to do. 😆
Exactly
Thats basically what guts is though
@@AwesomeNuke No it's not
@@LordManhattan
Lol
And the one time link listened to his gut he then changed his answer
This would be 10000% better if the people were strangers. Rhett and link know the crew!
but it makes for a funnier episode this way. They don't want it to be too scientific
And those strangers were buying their kids fast food???
They still didn’t do that great lol
Link should always do the opposite of what his gut tells him
@@DrewDawkinsno
Rhett should’ve overcaffienated for this episode. They should try it again with Rhett overcaffienated and see if he gets them all right.
he'd be able to tell you everything about them before seeing who it is 🤣

it would actually be interesting to see them ACTUALLY recreate the original experiment they referenced.

For some reason I thought about this episode too when I began this one, it was soooo funny
One of the best episodes ever
You can see link is actually frightened before stepping inside so I think it wasn't a gut decision it was him being afraid of Lucas😂
You can also see the employee holding the string shorten it, cause the bucket with the fish guts requires more strength.
I chose to believe it was his gut to take the hit for some one he loves and not let them get hit with the bad thing.
Links gut is being a loving guy.
If gut instinct is partially based on experience, it makes sense Rhett and Link had the same on so many! They've shared so many experiences together.
