Man you are loaded full of tools. I have some of the pfeil palm tools.. I'm getting tools as I need them. I started watching Roger and fell in love especially with the price of knife. He talks like I learn.
Thanks Jeff, I am a wannabe carver. Like you said I bought a lot of carving tools I was not happy with. One of my new favorite carvers Doug Liker said in one of his vids is buy once cry once. I learned to carve watching Mr. Gene Messer , love the guy, God Bless him. I love Mr. Roger Stegall as well as Mr. Kevin Coates hopefully you keep these informative videos coming. Love the Helvie knives , have 9 of them . I need good set of gouges v tools thanks for tip of pfeil . I will also check out study sticks, thanks never seen one before but it looks very helpful. Thanks
Jeff: I have been doing a lot of TH-cam watching for wood carving and some of the creators just don't realize what it takes to get good knives. Helvie has a 16 month waiting list. A year and a half. If you want to start carving now, you can not get a Helvie knife. Ebay has a few that are way over priced. Not many. Drake knives have a 6 month waiting period. Then next tier down are available immediately. OCCT, Badger State Blades. I even use an old Flexcut that I have honed razor sharp. But the truth is, the best knives are not obtainable now. Unfortunate. But realistic.
Thanks Gene. I appreciate that. I always appreciate constructive criticism, that's how i learn. No matter how old you get you can always learn something new if you just listen. Oh, i was born in 56 so that kinda makes me a kid to you, lol.
For some silly reason, I want to carve some smaller pieces of really hard wood. I've seen Pfeil Swiss Made recommended for their strength and edge retention, but I'm unsure about the form factor. I feel like the palm chisels might be a good way to keep control with the force required, and it was by searching about those that I came across your video. Do you have any experience or advice to share?
Pfeil block and palm chisels would be best for small pieces. And yes they are the best quality and will hold their edge far longer then cheap chisels. Hardwood will require a very sharp tool and pfeil would be best.
They are absolutely not out of business! Helvie is a small "Mom & Pop business, run by two incredible people who have full time jobs outside of the knife company. Pay attention to the message on their website for notice on when a small stock of knives will go on sale. Also: look at the "signature series" knives on their site and contact each of those carvers directly. They often have new knives available on their individual websites.
Good job Jeff. Tha k my carving brother. God bless.

Thanks Rick. I hope you got something out of it
@@TheWindTurbineKing I've got a box of junk knifes and chisels. My best success came from much older tools from Yard sales
@@rickballard1627 Yeah i have a box full to. Older tools are always better quality i think. Yard sales are good, love um.

@@TheWindTurbineKing o
Jeff, sorry I couldn't make out the name of the carver you mentioned as an advanced carver. I'd like to check him out.
Thanks
Roger Stegall
Nobody has any in stock
Helvie is out of business now, I believe. I can never find anything in stock or even a way to place an order
Check with Roger Stegall. I don't think that they are out of business.
