How I paint League of Legends Splash Art - Caitlyn Resistance Splash Art Process

- I've been asked about this video a lot and I finally quit being lazy and came out with it! This is my process video for how I generally worked on splash art images for games like League of Legends and Smite. I would've shown the whole 20+ hour real time process video but honestly I don't know what I would've talked about to fill that time up and it would've had to be published as several videos.
For a summarization of my overall splash art process, I would generally start with research and reference gathering based on the brief I would be sent. Then, I would move into the thumbnail/ideation stage where I start drawing a lot of small, quick sketches and explore different camera angles and story beats to help express the character and the story the client wants to showcase. Next, I would refine a small number of those thumbnails that I liked the look of and thought were the most successful. After that, I'd move onto either exploring color and lighting OR I start to lay out the final drawing, I've handled these steps interchangeably in the past, but nowadays I tend to lean towards handling the color and lighting sooner rather than later. And finally, I begin the rendering process. this is a long part of the process, but really I don't have any great steps for it, I just paint away until it's done.
Thank you all for the support and for continuing to subscribe to my barely alive channel. It means a lot to me!

First time ever an high end splash-art illustrator take time to break down and narrate the process on youtube. You're a savior sir.
Check out David Finch too.
Definitely not the first one however often times NDA is what prevents artists from talking about the illustrations they did for companies. I feel like the contracts are getting a bit more flexible or at least the artists relations with these companies gets a bit more flexible so we may be able to see more process wise.
Not just NDA but the possibility of selling it as a course@@Kokose
Atey Ghalian did some a long time ago
It is so refreshing to hear these images may take a whole month or 50h of work, there's too many tutorials misleading people into drawing and painting quickly, ultimately leading to unrealistic expectations and frustration, when in truth what will truly benefit us is to spend the right amount of time on each stage and make sure everything is as good as it can be, specially if you're learning or doing a portfolio piece that doesn't have a deadline.
I don't even play League, but their official art is one of the best digital art I have ever seen in my life. Always wanted to be able to draw like this, but I couldn't even figure out how to start. Thank you!
Man low key pulled up the nudes he used as reference and uploaded them on TH-cam. Thanks brother, i appreciate u for taking a monetisation cut for the homies 🙏
Omg not the virgin incel comment 😂 Makes sense since his style is basically cheap boring porn made for media illiterate Marvel fanbois
That’s what I thought, but if it’s under education then it should be fine.
The whole process shows how important and essential the drawing part is to the overall image. Many artists unfortunately overlook that aspect and focus on the rendering phase instead. The amount of trial and error invested in the structural foundation of the splash is worth watching and learning from! And only shows what a prominent artist Forrest is! Thank you for sharing!
Dude , you've literally given me all the advice I would have liked to hear years ago. I was making basic mistakes out of pure ignorance that were systematically leading me to burnout because I didn't understand where I was going wrong. This is gold. I'll try to apply them and see the results. Thank you so much, seriously.
whenever I see an amazing artist and they suddenly disappeared, they will come back telling us that they got into blizzard, it's crazy how blizzard collect all these insane artist like pokemon XDD!!
thanks for the uploading! your art is so inspiring
I had watched COUNTLESS of Leauge splash art timeplase videos on both TH-cam and Chinese sites, tried to figure out by myself the process and techniques. You had no ideas how much this breakdown video help me, thank you so so much, really hope you can do another one in the near future
Wow holy moly, my jaw honestly hit the floor as you were pumping out those short studies, like you get them done with such accuracy and speed
Something about being able to authentically show everything involved with an artists process has always been my favorite.
Every reference youve shown along with the breakdown of what you liked was so great to see.
Sometimes i watch speedpaints and the concepts seem segmented and just fragments of what the artist is thinking, and I think its super cool to get a layer and display of your process because it really shows all the efforts within it.
Just knowing the amount of time that’s available when working on this type of artwork has lifted a huge weight from my back haha
i have so much respect for artists who narrate their professional work, you have no idea how much you are helping aspiring artists! thank you so much for this video :D
I love the fact that you mentioned that for the 95% of the splash art you only used Hard Round Opacity and Soft Round brushes. Many folks (including myself) tend to completely overthink the brush preferences for artworks of such high fidelity.
I appreciate this SO much, thank you for posting this!! It's so hard to find splash artists break down their process.
thank you for sharing your process on the splash art and your journey as a digital artist. greatly appreciate this as an aspiring artist myself. all of these are motivations to continue to make art and practice. #art #leagueoflegends
Most educational video I have seen in a while! Would love to see more of this!!
Thanks so much! Im trying to become a splash artist, and this is the only process breakdown video that ive stumbled upon which goes into so much detail. A huge help!
Thank you for that absolutely great video! I am currently trying to improve my art and wanted to try out splashart. I can't really render yet and has no idea, that it takes so much for a composition of a splashart. I think I have really learned a few things from this.
It's great how you also explain your steps and rendering, it helps a lot!
Keep it up! ☺
It always makes me so happy seeing amazing artists breakdown and share their process with others, great stuff, thanks.
I've been waiting for something like this from you for SO LONG, Forrest. I mean... my god. Thank you for taking the time to produce it. I haven't even seen the video yet and I already know how good it is.
Currently improving my digital art, really enjoyed hearing about a standard time frame given for in-the-field works like this. I'm sure it feels different while doing it too, but I always worry about not being fast enough, like a fear of same day turnarounds of finished pieces 😅. Like, I barely finish my own stuff in a week haha.
I'm so glad ur back on making videos. You're my fave artist of all time
As soon as you started on the forms in the beginning I was blown away. There's an efficiency to everything you did that really proves you're a pro.
TH-cam algo helped me out. I watched this video months ago. Then yesterday I watched a video by an artist was giving a lot of respect League's splash artist -- and it reminded me of you and this video. But i had no idea how to search for it. YT algo suggested it just now. Hooray! So now I'm finally starting to actually learn digital painting (software/theory etc) and wanted to watch you and other pros work again. I don't intend to be a pro, i just would love to be able to render like you do here.
People just what to know the secrets to your amazing work so they can gain a glimmer of your power
you guys are geniuses! beautiful artwork, i was looking for such a video after that skin released
Omg you are an absolute legend! You would be an amazing art teacher.
This was very in depth and informative, thank you so much!
Yes, thank you so much; it was my first time getting to see the full process and breakdown of a triple-a studio splash art. It was incredibly insightful and frankly inspiring as an art student. Thank you again!💖💜✨
The perspective step is very underrated now because most people rely upon Blender and other 3D softwares. Same with lighting it's a shame. Its nice to see another artist acknowledge it.
Enjoyed this so much :) Also, somehow I'm not surprised your original ideas on the poses were so much better than what the client wanted!!
Super valuable information! Thank you so much for taking the time to break down the process!
I'd love to know 13:35 how that works. The thoughts on the shapes and composition to work well with the pose. Probably the hardest and more interesting, yet unexplored, part of art tutorials/videos.
All these small competition things are so cool. Would love to know more about the though process you go through.
That's a great topic, probably one worth making a whole video on honestly :)
I've looked for something like that for a long time. It would be awesome tbh. ty for the reply btw! @@ForrestImel
Dude I am so happy for you, been following since 2017. So great that you're living the dream. Keep it up!
Randomly reccomended to me by TH-cam, but was really intresting. So many art videos on TH-cam arent from professional working artist these days, so its nice to see this kind of content. Hopefully you can do more videos like this in the future
Awesome video!! I can feel myself soaking in all of the artistic process haha it was so nice to hear all of the thoughts that went into creating this splash
This is fantastic content, and you're supremely talented. Keep it up! :)
Amazing video thank you, for sharing your process with such great and honest commentary, if say it was worth the way ❤✏️
Another masterpiece from a legend!
Awesome breakdown. Would love to see something similar for a Card game illustration such as MTG.
That is in the works! Unfortunately though my cards don't get released for upwards of 1-2 years so it may be awhile haha
Thank you so much for the breakdown, great video!
thank u for all the information you shared! it's really helpful for people who wants to get better at drawing
Niceeeee. Gonna save this one to study later. Thanks for sharing 🔥
One of the best videos out there. Thank you for sharing this
I might be seeing this a little late, but wow super interesting to know that you're doing almost all of your work with 2 basic brushes. I have been trying to get more into digital character designs lately myself, however I feel like I'm struggling to apply my physical drawing/painting skills to my tablet/photoshop.
Thanks a lot for the voice-over explaining your process!
THIS WAS SO USEFUL AND INFORMATIVE, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH! PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE TALKING OVER ILLUSTRATION VIDEOS!
you're a legend for this. thank you!
so excited to see a new video from you!! already know its gonna be awesome :))
@ForrestImel This was a really good video. I really appreciated your breakdown and insights with the process for this composition and some of the behind the scenes pipeline details. I hope you'll find the time to make more of these. Thanks for sharing!
man you struggle alot with the composition and the character perspective i can relate to that ,it is so awesome how the render pass can solve lots of stuff through out the process.
Hell yeah he's back!
Glad to see your beautiful face
Miss you
me a novice artist, learning how to draw people , i can relate how getting the form wrong and developing it changes what i am originally going for and also trying to figure out the surroundings so it fits in the world correctly
Incredible video 👏🏾
thank you for the upload learned a lot from it
thank you for sharing your process with comentary
This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing!
Great job! Thanks for sharing, so instructive.
pretty cool and usefull video, I've been trying to teach myself to paint splash arts transitioning from drawing to colors is definitively the hardest for me.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! It’s really helpful, I was really struggling the first time 😁 thanks for sharing your progress ❤
best art video tbh
Wow! It was a lot of work 👍
Amazing video!
Awesome!
james somerton, you back
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I'd love to know what canvas dimensions and resolution you find work best for your illustrations.
For league splash stuff I believe it's usually just a 16:9 aspect ratio. I try not to go any larger than 10k pixels on any one side because it makes my photoshop start to go pretty slow. Usually the largest side I work on maybe will go up to 8k pixels.
Hey! I would like to know how do you do the perspective grid in photoshop! 🤩
Hey there! There are a couple tricks to making one within photoshop but the one I am using is actually a separate jpeg file of a basic 2 point perspective grid with vertical lines in case I want to adjust it to be a 3 point grid. I just drag it in my files and set it to multiply and there ya go haha
@@ForrestImel Thank you so much! I thought you were using some sort of secret tool inside photoshop haha 🥷
awesome video , thanks for showing your process!
This is so good, thanks alot!
very great video!! can you do another explaining the grayscale to color process?
I'll consider it, it's not a major part of my process though, so I don't think I'm the best at showing that kind of technique.
Not all heroes wear capes 🙌♥️
Thanks for this!
Great Video! Thank you
Thank you for the video!
What's the recommended canvas size in pixels for a splash art?
I don't quite remember what the aspect ratio is that they prefer, but my last splash was set at 7384x4133 for what it's worth :)
@@ForrestImel thank you for the reply, I'll stick to around that size of canvas from now :D
Wow so good anatomy)
I really liked this video. It was very instructive. ^u^
Sick Shaman King poster
this is why im sub to this channel
Thank you so much
Ah yes. I think I will continue to consume content related to League of Legends (especially Arcane) for the rest of the year. The thing i wonder though is how everything else about League of Legends is better than the actual game. The art, the lore, the characters, the animated videos, the music videos, the shows.
PS: This is based on what ive heard from a lot of people, havent actually played league of legends so i cant give much opinion on it, but i will say its just not my type of game, but DANG the art sure is!
Thanks for sharing! this is super helpfull!! Maybe you said it in the video, but i was wondering if you ever sent progress updates to the client once the rendering process was in action? Or if you just finish it after the client is happy with a thumbnail, story, pose ect?
Yeah, most clients I will send at least the thumbnails, then a color rough, then maybe a halfway point of rendering, and then finally the finished render. League work was a little different since they had weekly meetings so they wanted an update once or twice a week, regardless of what step I was on. But other clients like Magic I'll pretty much just send the thumbnail and then send them the final when it's done.
Amazing work. I wonder if you flattened the background with the fog in it after color stage before you started rendering it .
Thank you for the Content Forrest ❤May i ask if you work on other projects in a month or do you solely focus on the splash art for the time being?
Yeah since splash art tended to be on a cycle of 1 every 6-8 weeks I would have to also have other work on my plate so I wasn't getting paid only once every three months haha. I would usually have 1-2 Magic the Gathering or Hearthstone cards, 1 Smite splash illustration, and 1 League illustration that I'd be working on simultaneously. At least that's what the last year was like before starting at Blizzard.
@@ForrestImel Oh my bad I didn't consider that there are cycles with offtime in between 😆.
It's amazing to hear, that's a lot of different kind of work you'd do, I suppose it kept the mind fresh.
Can I ask, is the communication with the art director only done via mail or would you guys have video meetings?
Sorry to bombard you with questions, I'm just trying to understand the field a bit since it's so blurry for me.
Again I appreciate you for taking your time to share your insight with us, it's not always seen :)
@@omedha.4176 Oh no problem, happy to help! All discussions and feedback would just be handled over email, I personally always hate it when a client wants to talk to me over zoom or discord or something to go over things. At least when I was freelancing, most of the time it was never necessary.
@@ForrestImel Interesting thank you for clarifying!
what canvas size? Thanks
We would love to see the whole 20+ hour process of this beautiful work. Maybe divided into 10 videos with 2 hour length.
thank you
can you do a video on using the laso tool? Feel like that's a technique that's used a lot but not really explored anywhere online
That's a great idea, yeah I could do a video going over that!
Thank you!
thank you sooo much
I always wonder how much they charge for a splash like this
I was paid $5000-$6250 depending on the type of splash it is, however I worked through an outsourcing studio so they also take a cut, their cut is usually anywhere from 30-50% so the total payout for a splash like that through a studio is closer to $8k-10k.
Also for your channel Distraction makers is it on Spotify or just youtube for the time being
Right now it's just on TH-cam, I think "podcast" is a little misleading, we are aiming for shorter game design discussions at the moment so youtube makes the most sense for now.
@@ForrestImel oooh oki oki, it sounds like an awesome podcast idea so cant wait to see where it goes!
Did you are not teaching at CGMA anymore? i really want to learn from you. will you going to open course again in future?
Unfortunately I'm too busy to actively be doing a mentorship at the moment, but I am going to work on a self-guided mentorship for anyone interested that follows a similar structure to what I taught at CGMA. Because it is self-guided though it won't have that direct feedback, but it will be significantly cheaper than a direct mentorship.
What canvas size do you recommend? I want to try out splash art :)
I'm not sure of the exact pixels, but I think it's about a 16:9 aspect ratio
Hi, could you tell me what image size should choose?
This guy makes cars look both ways when he crosses the street
How long does it normally take u to finish a splash artwork ?
What microphone do you use?
I believe it's the sennheiser e945
How does one make a perspective grid like that? Is it available anywhere?
I actually just use a 2 point perspective grid with vertical lines I found online as a separate image and then drag it onto my images. It's quicker that way and guarantees that the perspective grid I have is correctly laid out.
@@ForrestImel Thank you!
