Great job. Excellent video. The only think the I recommend doing differently, is not disconnecting the wires at the coil. Only when Using the spark plug boot removal tool you just leave them concrete to the coil. There is enough room to just leave them carefully dangling out of the way until you take of the spark plug. Just so you are avoiding breaking or loosing the small blue clips. I learned that working on my e-class. Thank you again showing how to remove all the “nonsense plastic covers“ (using your term that I 100% agree with you), lol intimidating / acoustics cover plastic coverings.

Thanks for the video, helped a lot! I bought the spark plug boot puller, I didn't find it very useful. Bottom line you have to put a lot more force into removing the coil and boot than I expected. Enough force to make me fear damaging the boot but all's well. My two cents is to recommend when loosening the spark plug work it back and forth a few times initially until it unscrews easily. Sometimes a bit of carbon or deposits get in the threads, one thing you DON'T want to happen is damage the threads in the head. Overall it's a ridiculous amount of work just to replace 6 spark plugs. I put some DOW High Vacuum grease (like dielectric) on the boot so next time hopefully it won't be as difficult.

Although they does not factor in 1 possibility, the Oh "Excrement" Moment.
Had an small unscene item or object fallen into the turbobcharger intake, you initially left unplugged, what could hve been damaged?
Or the headaches should one or seveal plastic parts break while removing or installing.
If EVERYTHING goes exactly as planned then money can be saved, but IF IT DOES NOT GO as planned then wait time and extra replacement MB parts causes price to GO WAY UP.
Unfortunately DIY insurance is not offered by most insurance brokers.
Experience and compentcy are HIGHLY undervalued by the average DIYer.
Always remember Dirty Harry saying first:
"Do You Feel Lucky.....Well Do You?"
Go in with eyes wide open to unforseen mishaps.
Tom - Thank you for your comment, everything you said is exactly dead on! There have been times when a simple task unexpectedly turned into a project. That being said, there are plenty of jobs on the “easier” end of the spectrum where it makes sense to DIY instead of paying to have it done. Most “Pink Caddy Garage” videos fall on that part of the spectrum.
Thanks for the video and your time. Don’t recall it being mentioned but torque spec for the plugs are 23nm or about 17 ftlbs. Just did mine with the help of your video. Looking forward to more of your videos as I plan to keep the truck for a while. Question, have you noticed rear door panel separation at the ledge?
I haven’t noticed any separation on the panel, but I’ll check it, thanks for watching!
Left out a very important piece of information-- the spark plug torque setting as these are indexed plugs and their orientation matters.
Joseph, thank you for the message and you are correct! The torque spec on these plugs is 23 nm, according to everything I’ve read. I used NGK brand 95875 spark plugs which are manufactured with the correct index. However, this will not be the case with every brand so when buying spark plugs, look for the notation that they are “indexed” spark plugs.

The spark plugs were about $68 for a set from rockauto.com
The 14 mm socket was about $9 and the spark plug boot puller tool was about $12. Overall, a lot cheaper than taking it and having it done!

Great video. Mine 2018 had 49000 miles so I am about to change them. I do learn from another forum that running your car for 15-30 minutes and keeping the engine hot will help remove the wire boot. The engine has to be burning hot then the boot won't stick to the spark plug. I will see.
I will try that next time because I was sure I was going to tear the birds in two trying to pull them off
Love your videos! They are easy to follow. Out of curiosity, did you change your spark plugs first time on 60K miles... or is this the second time? I believe recommendation is to change them at 30K miles.
First time. I think the book actually might say 50,000 miles, but I don’t have mine with me at the moment. At any rate, it did not seem to need them, no misfires or anything but I went ahead and did it because I am trying to keep up with the service by the book.
Followed all steps and successfully achieved the goal. Amazing tutorial and hats off to you as it was not an easy task. Coil removing was the most painful step. Broke one plastic cover but didn't stop!
Yes, on mine the boots were on the plugs so firmly I was sure I was gonna rip everything in half taking it apart but fortunately nothing broke.

Too bad, I was sure mine would rip I had to use so much force to remove them. Maybe apply some dielectric grease when reinstalling would help.

Just want to mention that the coil has a lip that needs to fit into the groove on the boot so it’s better to attach the coil to the boot properly then insert the boot with the attached coil.

Do you have a video on battery change for GLS450? If not, can you show the steps involved, getting to the battery itself is such a pain. I just removed the first cover under the passenger's seat and then I had to abort. It was too risky to pull out that plastic part. Thanks in advance.
Haven’t had to do that yet but when it happens we will make a video. Original battery is going on for over four years old so should be sometime in the near future.
Thanks for the video, very helpful! I'm doing some research on the x166 spark plug gap and I'm finding conflicting information. I see NGK's website notes .028mm. You mentioned .029mm. Where can I find this information please?
Well of course I googled it before I started the job. But, the spark plugs I bought were pre-gapped at the clearance mentioned in the video so I felt like I didn’t need to change them to a different gap at that point.

Changing spark plugs on 2012 ML350/W166 chassis is a pain the butt. An award must be given to MB for sure. Cost to change the 6 spark plugs at dealership is $600-$800!!!
I’ve never done one on a GL 450 but on the GLS it’s a good 15 to 20 minutes of taking off covers and other parts covering up the engine.
And the dealer techs can do it super fast. Gravy job for them.
Can you make a video for GLS 450 for transmission oil change??
I actually had that done at the shop. We were in the middle of moving and I didn’t have a place to do it and a couple of the tools that were needed so no video on that. By the way, the shop charged almost $1100 for the work. Not cheap.

It’s just a matter of taking more stuff off as long as you can keep track of everything and can get a good seal on that valve cover gasket when you go to put it back on.

No, I do believe they have a gasket, I’m just saying to get the gasket in position correctly before you start tightening down on the fasteners

@@pinkcaddygarage267 no. I mean the screw which in that engine intake Manifold you call it captive bolt .what is the name of that captive bolt .I broken it and it got stuck in it now
That part is called the engine air intake hose assembly. When you buy one, it comes with a new bolt. I’m not sure you can actually buy the bolt and replace it separately.
What is the firing order?
I had a tough time finding a straight answer via Google. Did find one site that listed the M276 V6 firing order as 1-4-2-5-3-6
Holy cow! You don't remove the gray tabs completely from the connectors! You pull them until they stop and then squeeze them to release the connector. The spark plugs must be torqued to precisely 23Nm (16.96 ft-lbs), not 18 ft-lbs. Spark plugs are gaped at .026"-.028". A copy of the WIS might be helpful.
Holy cow! Thanks for the specifications. At the time of this video 18 foot pounds and .029.” Yeah for the only specs I could ascertain. Also, no harm incompletely removing the gray tabs. That seemed to work better for me and getting the connectors off. That said, and I have 32,000 miles on those plugs with no issues so I think I’m good.
