      the obsession with labeling everything as "selling"....and that it's some revelation. Welcome to....Persuasion.....basically ALL human communication in drips and buckets. You persuade your friends to do something, you persuade your lover that you love them, beforehand you persuaded them to like then love you. You communicate ideas and expressions, true or otherwise to everyone around the clock, from childhood til death. The comparisons never end....until....what is the point of the word anymore? I'm selling someone on my argument in some essay or in a speech that has nothing to do with "sales"? Sale is a word designated to define a transaction....as in, to buy or sell...goods and services...an exchange of money or objects must be involved somewhere in there. And it's cute to compare it to real life 'selling' or...just a convincing argument...but the problem is, make a movie about sales, and every monologue then becomes 'selling'....as if it's some veiled layer.

    "A sale is made on every call you make. Either you sell him stock, or he sells you on a reason he can't." If my response to a cold caller is to just put the phone down immediately, does that count as me selling him? I'm a pretty good salesman in that case.

    I was the ‘Seth’ in these group performance settings. I worked in telemarketing and was number 3 in pledge dollars, but number 1 in % received. Some people just can’t do this. I’ve seen people ‘try harder’ after these sessions and it’s like watching razor blades on a nutsack. Some people just aren’t meant to be salesman. This one dude was terrible, but was fantastic at NOT LETTING PEOPLE OFF THE PHONE until they accepted his “have a great day” pitch. Was a teen from a home for boys. Most of the managers slept with the female workers and later I found out the firm stole its leads from another firm. This place was a class act.

    Most of the comments here are total bullshit. I was in sales as young as 16 years old (no, not Wall Street or stocks, but absolutely cold-calling people about bullshit products). And I could close. Not the best by far (my friend's older brother was far better than me), but certainly among the top 10% of people in the building. And you know what?? It fucking sucked. I hated every minute of it. Aside from flat-out screwing people over, it was constant stress. Everyday you knew you had to put numbers on the board. And no matter how many days and weeks I put up good numbers, I was always worried my dry spell was just around the corner, no matter what my own track record was. Everyday was like riding the edge of a razor in regards to your job. It was horrible. But nothing is more pathetic than reading these comments about people pretending like this is their life philosophy, when they probably couldn't sell a winter coat to someone who was freezing to death.

    Total idiotic sales approach, but nicely done by the film's producers to make it appealing to the viewing public. Many times I've had aggressive telemarketers call me in the past (before the days of caller ID - where I now don't even pick up the phone if I don't recognize the number) and basically just laughed and hung up the phone in their face. As far as this particular field of investing in stocks, all anybody with even an ounce of friggin' common sense would have to ask themselves is: if this particular stock being pushed were that great - where the telemarketers were making it sound like it's the next Amazon or Microsoft - then why aren't the backers & promoters of it investing in it all for themselves, and instead paying other people to go out begging the public at large to purchase it?

      You can't get unlimited loans, so even if you've put in 100% of your cash into the stock, even if the whole company as done the same, you STILL want it to go up by selling others on it (and collecting fees on top). Unless you're one of the most elite firms with billions under management, you'd still be looking for others.

    • @musicoldies83
      @musicoldies83 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you described is your classic pump & dump scheme performed by shady nickel & dime brokerage houses. If you as an investor are truly investing into the company for the long haul, the last thing you would actually want to do is have others buy into the stock en masse to overinflate its value and cause a long term negative outlook on the company.

    You can't say this anymore in the real world. You have 10 different departments on you for worker abuse etc. Those suits back then would just do what boss says. Now they just whine and look for the first opportunity to call some department of the government.

    I see in Seth's eyes the same look I had 20 years ago. Life is allllll about money and either you're gonna be the guy who gets fucked out of it or the guy who fucks people out of it. Same as any and ALL relationships, no exceptions, there is always 1 person fucking around and living their best life behind their partner's back and the other who is so mentally caught up they can't sleep at night. Life. I used to wonder how or why anyone would do dope. I no longer do that I only wonder why I quit using dope.....maybe need to go back on it.

    Although the movie was based on ripping people off & I don’t advocate that ☝️however the things he says here are true about sales and can be applied to a legitimate business & product. Believe in what you sell or don’t sell it! Be relentless! ALWAYS BE SELLING. ALWAYS BE CLOSING. 💞

    I haven't seen the film, but I gotta be honest. From this, it looks like a bunch of drama guys got together to do an interpretation of a movie scene they like. Basically, to me anyways, this is a poor mans Alec Baldwin Speech from Glengarry Glenross.
    No one does Baldwin....like Baldwin.

      Nope. The two scenes have completely different tones and motives. Baldwins character is there to scare the salemen and piss them off....negative motivation. Aflecks character is there to give them some perspective and a bit of a push. He might be a bit aggressive, but hes there to help fire them up, not chop them off at the knees

    Sales is important, even in an interview you’re selling yourself.
    However, not this kind and not with these sorts of attitude. Again, Boiler Room shit.
    True salesmanship is about helping your clients out and building a relationship with them so that you guys would become trusted business partners that seek mutual benefit.
    As many of the comments pointed out, this is the bad example, sell at all cost, make up shit, lie, extort, play with people’s emotions. A classic example of misusing your god given gifts, strength and intelligence can be weapons, do not wield them against the weak.
    The worst comments are the ones gloating, like suffering ego trips... Yeah sure you can close anyone anywhere, but at what cost? Selling your soul?
