"2nd Frigate Squadron at Portland Naval Base" the good old days when we had a half way decent RN!

I was in Tidereach July 64 to Dec 64 and then Tidespring from Dec 64 to July 65. I was 3rd sparks.

I didn't join Tidereach till April 1966 and transferred to Charlotte in Nov that year. Maybe it was someone else who took you up? I did learn to fly at Paya Lebar though.

We were out there in the Far Flung at the same time. We probably used Terror Pool on some days without actually knowing each other. Good times.

We were on the Beira patrol for a period, with Mombasa for R & R! I had a wonderful time on her and spent a total of 18 months based in Singers. Transferred to Fort Charlotte. Very happy memories and still can't believe my luck. I am working on a couple more films of my RFA time which I hope to post.. BTW - my name is Bob Gardiner. Geoff is my pseudonym! Lol.

Thanks Geoff. I left Reach in 65 by light jackstay to join the new Tidespring in the Indian Ocean.

Sorry for delay in reply. It was a second officer navigator who took me up. All a long time ago but he was not for my ship. I had hoped to go and do a PPL at Carlisle when I went on leave but it was too expensive.

It all seems to add up mate. I certainly was a 2nd Officer at the time. I know what you mean about the expense in the UK, hence why I learned in Singers. Never regretted it though. Keep safe.

You didn’t by any chance leave to go and fly big aircraft ? If you did then I recall you taking me up in a small Cessna from Paya Lebar when you had a PPL.

Wow, that's probably me then. I was intending to get my commercial licence, and had actually had an offer from East African to fly VC10s. B****y Admiralty flew me home before I got it though and i finished my time in Fort Langley. I regret not getting my instructors rating, but still love flying. I now fly the biggies on the 737 simulators, which is almost as good! What ship were you on?

@@geoffcushnet3675 Sorry for such a delay in reply to your query as to my ship. It was Tidereach I was serving in when I went up in the Cessna and eventually transferred to Tidespring. Happy days! Hope you are keeping well. Regards .
