- Wooly Buggers are one of the most popular and effective streamer flies ever created. Very versatile, and relatively easy to tie. I created this articulated version to be able to fish larger fish. A good baitfish imitation.
They work for just about every fish species. From bass, to trout, to even saltwater fish species. All have been caught on a wooly bugger.

McFly Angler, I may have a solution for your problem with the amount of hours you spend on your channel. I stead of making several videos a week, just make one. At the end of each week you could make a video that has multiple segments such as a channel update, fly of the week, etc. This might give you more time to work, rest and help with the baby girl but still get your viewers the content that they desire. Great video
+Dylan Smothermon thank you... and most of the videos are quick, it's the fishing videos that take forever... lots of hours of filming to look through... I might lessen the fishing vids to only once or twice a month... fly tying vids take just a coupe of hours... and the update vids are even less.. also, TH-cam cuts down view exposure for channels with less videos..
I tie a similar version in 3 different sizes with and without the conehead. The weightless version other than a few lead wire wraps is my favorite for most of the waters that I fish. Great tie, a must have for any fish under any situation, so effective that if I don't have any in the box my chances of getting a skunk are much higher, lol.

This is why I like your tying videos s I've kina kicked around a similar idea before, just never tied any up. What's the purpose of the beads exactly? Is it just to help keep the rear hook right? I wonder if their is a small enough tubing or something to keep the weight down at that point so the fly would not be so back heavy and tracking flatter or more head down?
The beads help stiffen the mono, so it doesn't foul up. Extends the hook back a bit, and keeps it more stiff. Just a spacer really. You could use any bead, plastic craft beads that kids use to make bracelets work as well.
Recommend using 70 pound braid if your tying articulated streamers for salmon or saltwater fish
ok. lol. But they aren't for salmon or saltwater specifically. Not this fly. I use 10lb tippet fishing this, the heavy mono will not break before the tippet. Thanks though! :)
@@McFlyAngler oh of course if your fishing smaller fish like trout bass etc use what’s shown here I just did this this year using 15 pound fluoro and pulled half my fly back lol I just meant any bigger flies like ones meant for saltwater :) thanks for the videos though you’ve taught me tons of stuff and I love your videos considering you do a lot of flies tightline videos doesn’t have
Oh absolutely. Yeah I use either heavy braid or heavy intruder wire for many of my saltwater articulated flies.

Awesome fly! I wish I had this on the Colorado, where I just was. A bunch of 25+ inch trout would pound my sparkle minnow, but only the tail. I think it looks great in green, which what I tied it in. Thanks for sharing your wonderful creation with us!

you might be able to get a better tie in with the mono loop if you burn the ends, it will make a ball bump that wont slide through the thread wraps,

Thanks! I wouldnt say its the "best" fly, but probably the most versatile for sure! Conditions change 24/7 so sometimes a fly might work better than a bugger, but I will say there aren't many situations that a bugger wouldnt work.

Which cone head did you use ? Your description in the video says 5mm, but the parts list says 4mm
Sorry... Probably the voice over is more accurate. I write up the parts list after I edit the video, during the time of upload, which sometimes is a day or two after tying the fly/editing the video. I probably used 5mm. But use whatever size will fit over the hook you are using. I usually like going smaller than larger, so the smallest that will fit.

Nice never seen an articulated one made before. I'm looking to start fly tying myself when I can get the gear. Can you do a video of techniques such as the whip finish. Or even a simple dry fly or hopper fly for a beginner to try?

As for the whip finish, yeah! I will try to do that soon. Good suggestion. I have a few playlists already with techniques. Such as attaching dumbbell eyes, or choosing the right hackle etc... I also have a playlist for "simple" flies. None of which are dry flies though. I as you might have noticed don't do a lot of dries. I mostly am into streamers for tying. Something I brought with me from fishing saltwater for many years. If you are interested in some simple streamers, check that playlist out as well. I don't know of many "simple" hoppers, but I did a midge dry once, that was pretty simple. However being a midge, you are tying on a very small hook, so that kinda stops the "simplicity" of it. HAHA Anything becomes difficult on a size 28 hook.

u did the hackle backwards my man..ur supposed to tie in the hackle tip first then your wire then your chenille. then u wrap your chenille forward then your hackle forward to the eye and secure then u counter wrap your wire forward to the cone.. then whip finish... it makes way more sense and its is WAY more secure/ durable.. hate to say it but wire alone isn't gunna keep teeth from ripping it free of four wire wraps!
+Ben Diamond there are 100 ways of doing it, this is how I do it, and I've never had issues. I know of people who don't even use wire. Sorry but I didn't do it "wrong" just different than you that's all. Hate to tell ya.... lol.
