Finding a good keyboard or keyboard that works for you is like finding a good lover. It's a tedious process. But after many tries, you eventually end up with one which you will love, and that's so rewarding with every press you make. After becoming a keyboard supplier for my whole family I want to point out that your lover doesn't have to be the most expensive one or the shiniest one. In general key feedback, keycaps' shape, and layout matters the most.

Software Engineer for 20 years here. I find switching keyboards every few months helps me manage any pain. My theory is it "works out" different areas of your hands. Same thing! I thought I could live with the auto sleep on for the sake of longer battery life but I gave up after a week or less. The battery life without the auto sleep option has been surprisingly good, though, so I have no complains now.

    • @alsonc

@Diyotama I'd say 3 days with backlight only on at night. If I remember to turn off the keyboard when I sleep I can get 5 days. That's just an estimate based on a non-reliable memory of mine though :D

Been waiting for this one! I ended up switching to the MX Keys on my gaming desktop, away from several mechanical keyboards with various switches (red, blue, brown). I realized that I just really preferred the typing experience on my MacBook Pro (the 2020 13" with scissor keys, not the butterfly ones), and the MX Keys seemed like the closest alternative. I just can't seem to type as fast or accurately on a mechanical keyboard - too much travel.

For everyone wondering, the small and low profile keys of the Logitech MX Keys are not as comfortable and well suited for typing as other higher traveling mechanical switches, actually to the point where it makes my fingers hurt after more than 20-30 min of programming. MX Keys Require 60g of force to press, while let's say a regular mechanical keyboard only requires about 45g. I wish it was better for typing because it definitely looks great.

I recently got the GMMK TKL, I have arthritis and my membrane logitech was getting painful to use specially in the mornings, since my problem was typing the key and not hand posture I tried going for a standard mech instead of ergo.
I also knew clicky swtiches weren't my thing thanks to my SO keyboard but I still wasn't sure to go with linear or tactile. That's why I chose a hotswappable keyboard, so I can switch the switches if needed. For now I went with red gaterons and I'm pretty happy, morning typing pain is nearly gone since they are really smooth and they are silent enough I wouldn't be affraid to use it in the office or while I'm sharing home office with my SO.
I went TKL since I wanted to have my hands nearer that with a numpad in the right and didn't want to depend on layers since on flare ups I can't keep keys pressed for too long. And I chose GMMK because I wanted it to be ISO. I also bought Glorious Keycaps because they have ISO-ES layout available and it's a pain finding it elsewhere.
I'm not a RGB lover, so I configured the still backlight at minimum brightness in white for easier legend reading.
As Mayuko I slightly dipped my toes in the MK rabbit hole for investigation but tried not going further because I have enough expensive hobbies in my life xD

I have the same Kinesis Gaming keyboard but with the Cherry MX brown switches. I have been using Kinesis keyboards for over a decade and when they started offering Cherry switches it was awesome. They feel so much better than rubber dome mush. Ulnar deviation that leads to carpal tunnel syndrome and other RSI injuries is a real concern for programmers. I have seen many people go down from these injuries. Having the keyboard tented is huge. I have been programming for around 20 years and from my experience the most important gear has been a quality keyboard and a good fitting quality chair. Don't be afraid to spend money on a real HM chair. Without a quality chair, fancy keyboards are not worth their weight. If you are standing and typing for a profession, it is even worse. You made solid recommendations and thank you for the great videos.

Thanks for honest reviews from the perspective of someone who has one foot in the mechanical keyboard world. I had my concerns as well when I was trying to look for something that would suit my needs and environment. I ended up with the Filco Majestouch Ninja TKL in blues switches and then Leopold FC980C Topre 45g switches. Both are opposite extremes for me. I got both to suit two different environments. I used the Leopold for work where sound is an issue and the Filco for home where I can be as clickety clacky as much as I want.

I got the Kinesis Gaming keyboard and it's the best keyboard I've ever owned.
Sure, it's a medium-sized keyboard, but you can just move them apart to get your desk space if needed. The wire length is also adjustable. All keys are programmable so you can disable the CAPS key, the left macro buttons are easy to use, and it all lives in the keyboard's built-in storage. I always recommend brown keys if you don't know which keys to pick.

  • @ChristopherThompson1980

If you haven't tried the tent kit for the Kinesis, you should--it feels really nice.
I have the same base model with the brown switches and it was also too loud for an office environment--and was even getting picked up on calls at home until I put silicone rings on the key caps. Since then, no issues--but then I haven't been back to the office with it.
Regardless, if anyone is considering the Freestyle Edge: Get the tent kit. I tried not using it initially, and it's just so much better with it on. Yes, it's a bit of a mess on the desktop, but the utility and comfort is tough to beat. Use silicone rings if noise is a concern; I like the way they sound and feel, YMMV.

As a programmer and not a gamer, it's good to hear that others like it, too, especially with all the hype about mechanical keyboards. Mechanical keyboards remind me of the original keyboards that came out with the original PC's that I never liked back then. So I have not ever tried the latest mechanical kbs. I might be missing out, but then again, I like the low profile of the MX. Not sure I would like a keyboard that requires more effort from my fingers to use. 😊

@@cindykee3719 Nope. I personally grew up with chiclet keyboards since I owned alot of laptops so I prefer chiclet style keyboards with a small travel distance. I hate how clunky and thick mechanical board keycaps are. And even the "low profile" ones are too thick for my liking. I don't see the appeal to it lol. On top of that, I like that I can swipe my hand across the MX keys since the keys are even. I own several mechanical boards but rarely use them.

"flexing the typing speed" felt so relatable (just that it would be negative flexing in my case) haha Just got my first mechanical keyboard from ducky (sf2) also with brown switches for work but first time I typed in the office I was like, damn these are loud. Still like it so far as a good change. I was surprised that you did not introduce the Sculpt ergonomic. In the first video I saw of you in office (daily life of software engineer) it showed in your desk and I instantly looked it up and got it for at home and I absolutely love this keyboard. Wish I could use it at work.

My favourite keyboard _to type on_ is the Logitech MX Keys however... It isn't my _overall_ favourite keyboard for a few reasons.
    1. I dislike that it is full size. I would prefer it be a TKL. I want a normal nav-cluster layout but don't want the number pad.
    2. I wish it worked wired. The USB-C is used just for charging with no data transfer which sucks as I have no problem with using the keyboard wired, I actually prefer it as no need to charge it!
    3. I dislike that it needs the Logitech software to configure it. For a keyboard aimed at programmers (literally said on the website) it should store the configuration on the keyboard itself.
    4. You can't configure the backlight to be _always on_ . Again this wouldn't be a problem if it worked wired as it wouldn't impact the battery!
    5. I live in Europe but I only ever use a US/ANSI keyboard but I can't buy that in Europe! I had to buy the US International layout which is basically the UK layout (long return key rather than wide) which I dislike. I wish I could order the US layout in Europe but when I contacted Logitech they said "sorry we don't sell that model in Europe) 😢

I think one thing that you missed out on was that Keychron keyboards have the option for hotswaps, (I think it’s about $10 more) so if you don’t like the sound or feel of the included switches, you can buy your own and experiment. Great video Mayuko!

Keep in mind that the Keychron warehouse is in Hong Kong. It ships from there, and if you don't like the product, you're responsible for returning it to there. Which means, effectively, there are no returns. Keychron doesn't offer a return label, so you can pony out more money than you spent on the actual keyboard, trying to return it.
