Chinese Carbon Bike- DANGER!

  • This is a frame I got from VeloBuild at www.velobuildma...
    SHORT VERSION:
    -Frame snapped in descent.
-Injury toll: fractured my fibula and snapped a ligament.
-Recommend VeloBuild Chinese Carbon? NO WAY.
    LONGER VERSION:
I took great care to put this bike together, to inspect it before and after every ride. I had never crashed before this incident occurred. I had the bike for only a month and a half.
The back triangle of the frame snapped upon landing a 2 ft drop at decent speed. I broke my leg as a result. I am grateful i didn't further injure myself. Recovery time has been a pain. Mountain biking is great fun, but there is too much at stake to use unreliable gear. These frames are not reliable. I would not trust anything they make. If this video can dissuade you from making the same mistake I made, then it is worthwhile. There is no such thing as cheap carbon. And if it is cheap, then it is too good to be true!
If Carbon is too pricey or worrisome, stick with aluminum.
    Safe riding!

I see a lot of "Made in China" comments here. You people realize that most of the high end frames are made in China? Is not the location that matter, but the process, the number of carbon layers and the quality of the resigns put into the frame. There is a huge difference between a Scott frame manufacturing process and a no name brand that is using insufficient and cheap materials to copy a design. Top frames are very well engineered and the room of error is very small. Not building it EXACTLY as it was designed by engineers, will 100% result in a catastrophic snap. There are also high end frame tests that are performed before validating it as safe to use.
There is a reason why some frames cost 5000$, while other cost 500$. Risking your life just to own a cool looking frame is not a smart decision at all.

I've tried explaining to a few people that buying an expensive name brand bike/wheel isn't about showing off, it's about buying from a company that has a reputation they must uphold and a company you can hold legally responsible should it ever fail. A bike or set of wheels isn't a cheap computer peripheral part or kitchen utensil that can fail harmlessly. You're body and life are on the line.

@juncear The difference is just that a large brand is tying their name and an assurance that they stand by the bikes they are selling. So they do have better quality control and make sure their standards are being met. Many will have their own engineers in china overseeing the factory and production. When you buy no name carbon you have no assurance of even getting a reply when your leg snaps along with their bike. Even if it wasn't their fault and maybe something happened in shipping a large brand will make sure their shippers know to handle their stuff with care. Well the bible says no man is good, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So how do we get to heaven? Answer: By believing on Jesus Christ who took the punishment for our sin on the cross. There are no amount of good works we can do to achieve salvation because salvation is a free gift of God. We need to humble ourselves, realize we are sinners and that we need a savior.

@@fortunateson2 you're way out of touch with your information. Carbon is not going to progressively weaken from jumps and drops, that's what aluminum and steel do. Aluminum and steel will work harden around areas of stress and become brittle whereas carbon will remain flexible. Sure carbon can take a knock against a rock and develop a crack but the hits that crack carbon are just as likely to dent and compromise aluminum. Carbon is impressively strong, although I do agree with not buying a used carbon bike.

I have a 27.5 Chinese hardtail xc frame that has been in over 50 xc races the past 7 years and is bulletproof. Its been thrashed and crashed yet not ever cracked. I think that for xc racing the Chinese frames are just fine. By the way, I have a friend who owns a 29er from Velobuild that has been in quite a few xc races in Thailand . He's from the San Fransiso area and is over 6 feet tall . His has performed flawlessly too. You cannot generalize and say that all Chinese carbon frames are not good. While I was living in north Thailand many Thai xc racers bought chinese frames and had lots of success and I never heard of any cracking or failing in any way. DH is different from xc and the stresses are different too, obviously. I plan to build up a 29 full suspension xc bike from a Chinese frame this winter .

Let stones crash into the frame or your bike crashes... Aluminium or steel has a little bump in case of stone impact if there ist any sign at all, carbon will be broken or if its worse, the material will have broken Carbon fibers under the paint wich are like a little timebomb. You can find one thing from the video from which you can notice that the frame was not designed for bikeparks! It is the carbon rear fork. All manufacturers use only alloy rear forks in full-suspension bikes for rough riding. Only the main frame is made of carbon fibre except in XC-race bikes in which the rear fork might also be made out of carbon fibre. BUT I wouldn't take that bike in bikepark as it is not designed for rough dh riding and for example Canyon refers not to ride jumps/drops more than 60 cm (~2 ft) with such bikes! The chain stays act as the longer bar and the little pivot in the center acts as the shorter bar. Fundamental that is a non parallel four bar and the load transfer to the shock is not in line. Now you have bending forces. Yes it could work under ideal conditions, but everything flexes in real life. So speaking in structural terminology, it's statically indeterminate.
