My boy lived to be 20 years old and would wake me when I stopped breathing. A few times he'd hit hard enough to leave bruises to get me to breathe. It took a while to realize what he was doing, but he always had a concerned countenance on his face. Maybe I saved his life as a kitten, but he saved mine too.

If you haven't already, you may want to get yourself checked for Sleep Apnea, if you stop breathing in your sleep that frequently.
CPAP isn't the only option for treatment. They make a mouth guard that changes the angle of your jaw that can help a LOT of people, no air-pressure necessary.

I assumed this video would focus on quirky behaviors of male cats, but I was surprised to see it discussing things all cats do! Are there really specific things that only male cats do? I thought the behaviors would be more distinct. Can someone explain the difference

    • @Omniseed
      @Omniseed หลายเดือนก่อน +19

They're trends, all of them do these things but some behaviors are more pronounced or frequent in male cats. If you examined the life and behavior of a thousand cats you might see a clear difference that isn't so easy for most of us to notice

    • @beernbatam9540

I appreciate the discussion! I think it’s interesting how certain behaviors can be exaggerated in male cats, like their playful aggression or competitiveness. There might not be a lot of distinct behaviors, but the context can change how they act

      @sohanyt486 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

I found the video really interesting! While some behaviors are shared, I think male cats have their own quirks, especially when it comes to marking territory or being more affectionate. It's a fun topic, even if not everything is exclusive to them

Interesting video don't recognize all of this.
I own 2 British short hair cats, a mother and son. They can both be ferocious 'players', both with equal fanaticism.
Once I fainted in my apartment during a heatwave and broke my ankle. When I came to it was the female cat (and her kittens at the time)
all sitting around me, especially around my broken ankle.
When I feel truly miserable, either because of a depression or physically ill - the female cat also always picks up on that. She is less affectionate
than my male cat, but when I am sick or down she always comes to sit by me and 'suffers' my petting and gently using her as a pillow.

Most of these behaviours have been true of every female cat I’ve ever known in the last 45 years.
One thing that wasn’t the case with females I’ve known was the mounting. But then I’ve never experienced that with any male cats I’ve known either.
The noise is definitely a thing. I find males to be noisier. And every male cat I’ve ever known has been as thick as two short planks! Lovely, funny cats. But daft as a brush!
But the biting/nipping, aggressive play, dominant gestures, guarding etc are things I’ve experienced with plenty of female cats - our own and other people’s cats.
2 things that I’ve noticed, which aren’t mentioned here: I’ve found that female cats gravitate more to male members of the household whereas the males tended to bond more with female people. I’ve also found that males, when not neutered, are more prone to ‘spraying’ all over the house to mark territory. Which, frankly, smells nasty. I’ve never known that in a female, or in a neutered male.

Sorry, but having had cats my whole life, and currently having a female (non-spayed), she does ALL of these. Every cat can do these things, regardless of gender. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it would be about female cats because that's one of her favorite play strategies. She'll clamp on the arm or leg and chew/nip/bite... She won't do it to my wife because she has trained her not to by disengaging. I let her do it (mostly because of a high pain threshold) and usually have multiple scratches and small bite marks. She hunts us, cuddles us, and loves to climb the walls. I enjoy the videos, but definitively stating that one gender does this, and another does that, is disingenuous and misleading.

A nibble?!? My cat has more different bites than there are words in the English dictionary. There's a bite to get my attention, there a bite for being hungry, there's a bite for playing (got ya!), there's a bite for not wanting to be picked up, there a bite for moving my feet under the blanket, there's a bite for "Better leave me be", there's a bite for "I'm not having my best day", there's a bite for "I'm mad as hell", but the worst by long shot: frustration! That one is full force and jerking to tear into my meat.

This has been pretty true for the male cats I've had. At times they're so full of energy they just HAVE to do something. They generally are more physical beings. The mischief is there. My males were much more likely to sneak up and sort of pounce or to sneak up on the back of a chair and wack my head or neck, often with jaunty big eyes and grins. They seem to have the broadest senses of humor, too. Females seem more concerned about your health, though. I have a female now who lightly bats me in the mouth if she thinks I've slept too long.

My male orange tabby does consider me his territory. I was once in the hospital for four days. When I came home and sat down in my recliner, about all my wife and girl would allow me to do. The cat kumped up on my chest and wouldn't leave. He gives us cold hard stares when i let the dog on my lap and sometimes resorts to running through the house as hard and fast as he can. Making lots of noise. The dog jumps down to chase him, he doubles back and takes the dog's place. The dog has mostly stopped falling for the trick, but it took most of a year. He views me dog as stupid.

As a base information before commenting:
Okay, so, I've 2 cats, one male (orange/tabby) and female (tortoise), they're siblings and both been 'snipped/fixed'.
I've had one cat before them, she lived 17 years, was a tortoise.
1:28 In my experience withmy cats, both, my first female cat and current female cat, they're more playful and more... rough with their playing. Would snip at me sometimes. While my boy is more calm one, he does play, but not so excitedly as his sister, he doesn't really even nip/bite me. Only few, rare occasions, and it would be when he was angry/annoyed.
But I don't know how to describe the times my two cats play together... They had a bad fight about year ago, I had to keeo them separately fir about a week and get them used to each other again. (More about this later in comment.) I think my cats play a bit too roughly with each other... Not sure, but it feels like that, maybe I'm just anxious because they had that fight and don't want it ti start all over again.
1:55 Well, I here continue the stiry about the sibling cats bad fight... The girl got stuck by her leg on a cage outside, I rushed to get her out of it. She was scared, probably in pain or shock, as she was slightly hanging from her hind leg, she did reach the ground level, but I imagine it must still hurt and be scary. I started to help her, she started biting and scratching me furiously, well her brother came running over and tried to get between me and his sister... So this claim sums up, at least with my male cat. But the thing is, they were in really bad terms after that, boy tried to get close to sister, while the girl became defensive and even aggressive towards her brother. Lots of hissing, growling and chasing happened, at first at the girl's oart until the brother started to act more in the same way towards her too.
2:36 And this goes pretty much correctly for my female cat. She has always bene more timid out of the two. She can be the first at the door to greet me, but if she doesn't recognize me immediately, she would run and hide for a moment.
3:05 This doesn't apply for my male. Well, apart that he pounces on me, but he doesn't wrestle or bite me really. He is more like a gentle 'lover' who likes to cuddle. 😆 🥰
3:42 This goes for my boy. He's a cuddler, I love him. Though, I guess I might sometimes be little too excited and happy to cuddle him in my arms. 😅 🤣 My poor boy.
6:14 I have noticed this odd thing though. The boy lets his sister always to groom him. But the girl doesn't usually ever let her brother to groom her, not even at the time before that fight.

My family collective have had Cats since the 1960's - all had been female. Until, I adopted George, my now 9 year black-fur' Cat. He is very loyal. He sits as "guardian" at end of the bed, then will cuddle. He does nibble, bite, swat my arms -people not the scratches - yet, I have learned that he often wants to "tell" me there is no food or water remaining - or, he doesn't want to to get out of bed. When rain storms, and thunder out, he shelters with me. When I watch TV, he will wrap around one of me feet, and if the telephone rings, I may get a scratch too (these machines make noise!!)
I'm 55 year. and my Cat, according to a chart at the Vet' shows in Cat years, George would be 54 years, so...we are like brothers.

My (neutered) male cat is actually very gentle with humans, while his sister is the one who's (slightly) more likely to play-bite or grab. He is very insistent when he wants attention or to cuddle up, though. Both are actually less grabby than our two previous cats (both females). I think we may have had some odd ones!

There's a stray black and white Tom that has become friends with me. He always plays what I call the "Bitey bite" game if I lightly tap his side. He has never, not once actually bitten me. He just pretends to, and then lets go immediately. He also stands up on his hind legs, and braces his front paws against me so I can scratch him behind the ears. He's also a jealous little guy. If I pet another cat, he doesn't hurt them, he just places himself between me and the other feline! He's my buddy!

My cat grabs my hand and bites frequently and he keeps his claws in his paws but he bites like he is trying to eat me. Seriously. From the first 'nip' he bites as hard as he can and I have no idea how to get that across. Pulling my hand will make him think it is play and raising my voice will make him afraid. So far pulling my hand away and ignoring him for a minute isn't doing it either :(. He is a super sweet kitty too... he just BITES.

Adonis was a feral we earned the trust of and brought inside to live. We would lock the screen door and let him and Adelise, my humane society adoptee, look outside from the safety of indoors. (They never tried to actually go out when the door was open; no interest in it.) One night something slammed into the screen door and scared them both away from it, but while Adelise came and ran to hide beside me, Adonis stayed half-way between us and the door facing the door. We never found out what it was, but it was sweet that he put himself between us and the perceived (likely actual, for them, since we have coyotes and foxes around here) danger.
However, now that he's passed away, Adelise has been guarding more often. Other than that, she does all the same things the male cats are explained to do. Also, Gourry was a coward and he was a male. A bird got into the house once and he hid under the bed. xD But I will say that the neutered male thing is absolutely accurate. In my experience the males are usually the more friendly and affectionate ones.
That said, the neighbour's cat was a male and was the one to start bringing Adonis to our house because he seemed to know we'd feed Adonis like we had been feeding him. (And we did. That's part of how we got his trust.) He came with him every time and if something spooked him he'd run and bite Adonis and they'd both run off together. When we finally got Adonis inside and took him to a vet for shots and neutering, they said at some point he had been hit by a car because he had a limp and xrays showed so much had been broken and healed or healed improperly. (Nothing, however, that they said would cause him lasting troubles or pain to live with, so no need to put him down thank God.) With the injuries they showed, the only possible way he could have survived out there long enough to heal and come to us was if the neighbour's male cat was helping him while he was hurt. So not all males are hostile to one another.

Until Sept. 18, 2023, I had a pair of unrelated cats of the same age, a male tuxedo kitty, and a female dilute tortishell. She is still with me, at 15 years of age, and acting pretty much as if she were about 2-6 years of age.
They used to do this really cute thing, where they would insist on being in the bathroom with me. I couldn't close them out without making them claw at the door. Well... shared living arrangements made that something to avoid, and I did find a work-around. They would do a "changing of the kitten guard" where they took turns guarding me in my vulnerable state.
I even have a short video of my tortie laying belly up on July fourth, completely unbothered by the fireworks while "guarding" me.
They really did take turns, and in a way that very much felt as if they were taking turns. As one walked out, the other entered. A little later, they'd swap again, not wanting to both be in the same confined space as the other. With me was fine, just not each other. (giggling over their silliness) They didn't even really want cuddles. Some petting was good, but mostly, they were protecting me. Both of them.

I counter this with a pull on his fur or neck.. which he recognizes as a valid response.

I had a beautiful large pure grey male cat. He was a perfect specimen, and he was fully equipped. I lived by myself and one day a friend came to visit. He looked rather scornfully at the cat and said, 'Why do you keep a cat? They are useless and just take advantage of you.' My utterly handsome grey got up immediately and walked out the door. About five or ten minutes later, the cat walked in with a very large rat that he had just killed and dropped it squarely between my friend's feet. He then, turned around with his tail straight up and walked out the door.
He attracted a lot of female admirers, and one day I went out the door, and there were five females sitting on the roof of my van. He was studying them from the verandah. I went and gave the females a little scratch one by one, and when I turned around, the Grey was sitting with his back towards me. I walked past him back into the house and said, 'No need to be jealous, I wouldn't trade you for all of them, I was just saying hello.' I went in and sat down, and he eventually walked in, sat in the middle of the room and looked at me intently. Then he sauntered over, jumped up onto my lap, stood on his hind legs, and put one front paw on each of my shoulders He looked straight into my eyes, and then he bit me on the end of my nose. Not at all hard, just a little exercise to blow off steam I reckon, then he jumped down, turned and walked out the door.

You made a comment about unutered cats not getting along, and these boys were not as domestic as one might think. I would say ask the foxes, skunks, minks, weasels, ratcoons, etc but there any. Squirrel s and mice and the such are still around. They just killed everything the say as a threat, always running to any of the others in a fight. 5 of them. Had their pecking order, didn't spray in the house or even use the bathroom inside: asked to go out. Great with the kids, would run off even big dogs. Had 4 females at the same time, a whole other conversation. They played, ate, slept, and went out in the forest together. I hear this about male cats, the fighting and spraying and wonder why mine never did any of those things.

My little girl was affectionate most of the time but was always ready to play fight, the only problem was play was full power, no retracting claws and such like.
Admittedly she was a tiny, half feral kitten when I found her, but grew to a long legged, long body gorgeous "little girl" ( big, not talking huge, body as long as my arm, thin ) that my nieces thought she hated them when she was just playing. I named her Angelica after the little girl on rugrats, the one that terrorised the babies but had all the adults fooled.
Lost her to two dogs that got out and attacked her in her front garden.

He likes to guard the bathroom whenever I use it, and I mean every facility in the bathroom. I've caught him standing in the doorway facing away from me when I was showering. He's known my mailman all his life but still hisses at him, and sometimes he sleeps at the edge of the bed facing the doorway. I thought he was like that because the home we adopted him from had dogs.

Nipping/biting, guarding - that's my female calico cat, but then again, she imprinted on me. My white male cat is completely stolid (phlegmatic). He's more like a rabbit - never scratches you with front paws or bites you, but if you grab him he'll try to jump away using his strong hind paws (and that can leave marks if you're not careful). The only "male" thing my male cat loves is going to the bathroom with me, when I go to toilet. There he relaxes, non-judgmental Al Bundy- style, sharing the room, while I do my thing...😼

In regard to the mounting, my male tuxedo cat (and I'm also male) does a very weird thing.. He has not been fixed because he is impossible to bring to a vet or even be in the same room with a stranger, for NO reason. (I've been with him since he was 2 weeks old. Nothing bad has ever happened to him with any stranger, ever).
He's like 6 now and two years ago decided he was going to start humping my fuzzy black bathrobe I was wearing. I thought he was trying to do it to *me* but eventually realized he wanted the robe, and would do it every time I wore it. I eventually just gave it to him. Lmao. Now it stays on the bedroom floor, and this is where it gets weird.
Every single day, starting in the morning when I'm having coffee and then a couple to a few times throughout the day and night until bed, he starts going crazy on the thing on the floor next to me while I'm sitting at my computer. He bunches it all up under him and grabs it in his mouth like a female cat and the entire time he glances up at me, with puppy-like baby whale eyes, and screeches at me. He burrs, chirps, whines, and screams, and acts like he wants me to pet him while he's humping!! I'll reach down and pet his head gently and say something to him, and he screams bloody murder at me like he's pissed, but then looks at me again when I take my hand away like "Pet me, damn it!"
I swear to god that if someone was walking by and my window was open, they'd think he was either gravely injured or that I was beating him or something. When he's done after about five-ten minutes, he walks a few feet away and falls over on the floor and starts grooming himself, then relaxes. I've owned tons of cats in my 33 years but never one that did this! Lmao. Has anyone else experienced this or know what it's about? I may video it and upload it to my channel XD

Case and point, sometimes just before me and my then-wife were about to copulate, my male cat would enter this frenzied state and start bouncing off the walls! At first it was shocking to see but eventually we got used to it and it became quite entertaining. Moreover i suppose prior to the act we humans might release pheremones or something similar that we ourselves can't smell anymore, but i guess some other animals still can.

Nipping and biting?. My female does it to me when she's beginning playful and she's constantly playful. She actually plays more like a dog leaving my hand raw half the time. Guarding is another one I'm going to call bs. Butterscotch constantly guards me particularly from the puppy. Both dogs can't really get attention from me and she's not below pouncing without the use of claws at people if they get too close while she's on my lap. She's also pretty territorial when it comes down to other cats. We got some outdoor cats and last winter we let the 2 in for a few days because those days were extremely bad. Butterscotch did not approve one bit. She mainly beat tf out of the female. It's not a mating thing, butterscotch was fixed within a week of being old enough. The male simply hid the entire time. Butterscotch I guess is simply a B**** but I love her.

Male cats do not have “more pronounced hunting skills”. I don’t have any freaking clue where you heard that. I’ve seen more people say female cats are better hunters, but there isn’t even any evidence out there to support that either.
All cats also guard their owners as we are part of their territory.
Our female is the roughhouser at my home
I don’t think unblinking stares are attempts to show dominance. They claim your spot because they want to feel close to you. And the other shit you described sounds more like attempts to grab your attention.
Male cats aren’t less hygienic either. Where the fuck do you get your info?
