    This is a must video for those who are just getting into JS8 and trying to grasp its capabilities. Jason, you did a great job of explaining & showing how to use it. Bravo! Operators, please say hello on JS8 & practice what Jason demonstrated - W8APP

    I think the largest amount of confusion exists because JS8CALL docs use the term DIRECTED MESSAGE and it does not mean the same thing as what you are doing . So, newer (and some experienced) users will tell you they had sent a message BUT they did not use the format that includes MSG in it in the beginning, thus, there message just disappears off the screen and is not put in the MAILBOX. One must mention the MAILBOX quite often, as many users do not know that they need to go to VIEW and way down at the bottom it says VIEW MAILBOX. A smaller less important detail is that the ACK that the MSG command enables when the message is VERIFIED with the CRC (the random three letters at the end of the message, may not be received by your station even though it was sent. So, you might resend the message and end up with two in the mailbox. And finally, I put audio files in my system (go to settings for that) that will tell me when I get the simple DIRECTED line, and another for the ones with the MSG format. Both from Startrek, I took files and converted them to the correct format.

    Thanks for a great video introducing me to JS8call...Do you still run JS8Call? Maybe do an update on how you incorporate it into your comm plan especially since things may have changed due to rules and regs. Thanks again and S/F

    Your suite of videos on JS8 are the best I've seen, well done. You may have stumbled upon a niche video topic i.e. setting up ham radio software. Very well done. J

    A great video thanks for anyone new to JS8. Your explanation of the messaging options is particularly useful, great stuff. Looking forward to more in the future. Thanks Jason.

    It is amazing how far JS8 has come in such a short period of time! Hopefully, the messaging capability, particularly in terms of interoperability, will continue to improve. For example, I was just thinking how great it would be to have cross-band repeat. Someone at station A with only VHF could send a message to station B with multi-band capabilities for relay to station C on 20 meters for example. The wish list is seemingly endless. DE WA1KLI

    Thanks for creating these, I need one for FLDigi, Wiinlink, etc... lol
    Keep it up, great work!.

      @@KM4ACK That would be great, I have questions that's for sure. I'm finding a lot of the solutions on the Forums but I expect I'm missing some features because I didn't know they were available.
      The Pi-Build is great and only keeps getting better.

    I would absolutely love to see JS8Call develop into a mesh type system so that I could send a message out and it would route automatically to the intended recipient automagically using stations willing to handle the store & forward burden. (Possibly using the HB system and tables similar to what a network switch does which would be totally decentralized or similar to Winlink which uses more of a centralized CMS system?)
    JS8Call is already amazing and every new release has definite added value!
    Since I’m antenna deficient still I’m not able to do much but monitor weak signal digital but this summer I hope to get something ginned up that the HOA won’t see! Lol.
    (And along those lines, I am hearing stations from all 7 continents, including Antarctica in my basement with only a vertical tuned for 40m propped up in the corner. Best bands are 30m and (sometimes) 40m during the day and 40m/80m at night. Absolutely amazing!

      It would be a natural progression into the Mesh network, however there might be technical reasons this can't be done. Fingers crossed it will.

      Aren't a lot of the routing/storage functions performed by packet systems? My understanding (could be wrong) is that JS8Call is mostly adding a robust weak signal protocol. To make use of it though it seems to be having to re-implement solutions that are solved elsewhere. Not knocking it; it's really compelling because it's a multi-platform tool that does useful bits of more complex systems (packet, UHF mesh) with minimal setup and hardware and that's no small feat. Its big limitation for my interests though is that it really doesn't work with VHF FM (the hardware most new hams will have) because it lacks carrier awareness and doesn't compensate for being unable to hear multiple stations at once like on SSB. The least effort way to solve that might be to find a way to connect it to a packet soundmodem/TNC.

    Looks like I need to get the station back on the air. I pulled it down for lighting the other night and hadn't put it back on the air.
    Great video as always!!

    Thank you for this clear explanation! Question, how to know what station/3rd party can hear me and my buddy? Is there a tool for that or do you literally ask around or watch heartbeat replies or something?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You and your buddy should keep notes on who you hear on a regular basis between you. You can also ask other stations if they hear your buddy with a query.

    Great video! As a new ham I love how educational your content is. Ty
    I don't know anything about js8. Why would I need to use it? Is it for low signal comns or just way to converse privately?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not private by any means but it is really great at weak signal digital comms.

    Am I understanding this correctly that if you were to leave JS8CALL running it will automatically handle sending out the notices of stores messages, or automatically forward a message?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If configured correctly, yes.
