    articulate, concise, nicely outlined, stays on topic, excellent visuals, without a bunch of silly arm and hand gestures. I'm recommending this JS8 vid to the local hams.

    Great video. I gave up on JS8call because I wasn't seeing much activity, but now I can see the power it has. Now that I have a half decent antenna up, I'm going to give it another shot.

    Enjoying and learning from your back catalog. Is there a video that describes how logging is done? Does JS8CALL store a cache that can be exported in adif to the logger of your choice? I am really interested in HAMRS, and have not been successful in even installing other suggested Linux logging programs.

    Great video Jason. After watching your video this morning I installed version 2.2.0 on Win10 but don't have the "AUTO" button. Is it only available on the Mac version? Had my first js8call QSO earlier today.

    Was curious, I have the latest JS8Call installed but I cannot see 2m in my drop down list, how did you get the 2m freq to show up there?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I added it custom some time back and it has stayed through many updates. To add, click the freq in the upper left corner, the click the first option "set custom frequency". It will then show up in your list. Thanks for watching! de KM4ACK

    I'm very new to digi modes, and have spent all day working on js8call. When I tx or rx, it doesnt show up yellow, so not sure what to change on my FT-857D, also on the bottom, where is shows your last tx, my color is grey and yours is blue? Did you set it to show blue, and if you did, is it in ui, and which one did you change?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inside of JS8Call click File>settings. Then click on the UI tab at the top (Far right) You can completely customize the look of JS8 to suit you. 73, de KM4ACK

    I just downloaded version 2.0 for Mac. The reporting tab in the settings window does not show APRS under network services and does not ask for APRS passcode, why was this removed from the version on your video. Excellent video and very useful for a newbie on HF digital like me.

    Hey Jason, thanks as ALWAYS for your great vids. Quick question...I now have a Pi to play around with. I've got JS8 loaded and seems to be working *relatively well. Only thing is, my audio levels aren't *great. The left side, "CAT/S" is trending very high....sometimes green, but often turns red (it's up around 80). I've googled this like crazy, but found no answer....how do I adjust this so that it's in a happier range??

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Volume coming into JS8 is too hot. If you are using a signalink, try reducing the receive knob on the front of the signalink. Otherwise, try playing with the sound level settings on the pi itself. You can right click on the speaker icon on the top left of the desktop for extra options. 73, de KM4ACK

    • @timmanwell2538
      @timmanwell2538 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KM4ACK Hmmmm, saw that and made adjustments, but did not seem to see an effect. I'll keep playing with it. No signalink on this end...I'm running ic-7300, so going straight into R-pi.

    Great video Jason, I'm thinking of setting up a group of hams on 2m ssb JS8CALL or possibly fm in the future. The theory is to set up a large group in Florida as a kinda mesh network like message relay that when one station can't reach the intended location others at the middle point would pass the msg. I have seen videos how JSCALL will forward data to other sites automatically , so I think it can be done. And also set up a hardened network for grid down chatting and messaging in a place that has no hills and mountains only condos in the sky.
    It would be great if a cheep system of FM nodes for JS8CALL could be gone.
    Please give me your opinion and thank's

      That is an excellent idea! I would try to stick with SSB if possible. JS8 will work on FM but it works much better on SSB. I did some testing in this video with JS8Call to see how little power we could use. th-cam.com/video/DMbjZKXRXRk/w-d-xo.html

    When you are doing these tests are 2m are you using SSB or FM?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SSB but the antennas were only about 10 feet apart. I cut the power on both as low as possible but it still over powers the receivers with the RF gain turned all the way up. de KM4ACK

    I find JS8Call a novel mostly under used protocol. I've tried dozens of times to get a txt message forwarded to APRS from JS8Call with zero success. Most people either don't have their JS8call setup to forward the allcall, or the system is broken. I get back heartbeats, so someone is copying my msgs. My station is a QRP, portable station with a compromised antenna, which is exactly what we want to practice using for grid down scenarios. Any advice would be well received on how to make this work.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The syntax for sending APRS message can be a bit of a pain. I recommend using JS8Call Utilities github.com/m0iax/JS8CallUtilities_V2 which can also be installed as an option with Build a Pi

    What is the difference between JS8CALL and FT8 and can they talk to each other. I am new ham and not sure about some things.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FT8 only allows you to exchange call sign, grid, and signal report. JS8Call allows you to have a free form conversation. The two applications can't talk to one another.

  • @lucaclary8436

    Why calling CQ with locator and not callsign?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your callsign is automatically sent with js8call.

  • @michaelmichael8406
    @michaelmichael8406 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was under the impression that the accepted practice is to not change to the other station's audio frequency (as shown in the waterfall) so that you don't inadvertently transmit over them. JS8Call can decode multiple transmissions at once if they are on different audio frequencies.
    Is there a JS8Call operation best practices manual anywhere?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! You are correct that you don't need to align with them on the waterfall to decode. Align can help in two cases though. For a really weak signal, it will help you not to miss their transmission should you not decode the first frame. Also, if in a longer rag chew, it can help speed the QSO. You can deselect their call on the right hand sign and save one frame in each transmit because it won't send their call and then yours but will still decode b/c you are aligned. If you do this, just don't forget to ID every ten minutes. Thanks for watching! de KM4ACK
