    Dain Ironfoot is my favourite Dwarf. He was valiant in battle but I think that the answer he gave to the messenger of Sauron deserves a honourable mention. It was indeed an act of bravery that helped to gain time and send Gimli and Gloin to Rivendell

      @165Atlas Yes. The dwarves choose to be the heroes of this tale instead of being tempted by the greed of evil. Dain knew that Sauron couldn't be trusted and the orcs are the oldest enemies of the dwarves since Azog's time. He was wise, strong, cunning, and bravely stood his ground to the bitter end. The dwarves may be sad he's gone, but everyone should be proud of him during his last days.

      Dude, I always cry when I hear Gandalf say Fíli and Kíli fell defending Thorin -- with shield and body. And although Thorin died in the end, when one considers that, if Thorin had not survived the battle, would there have been a timely sure-footed man calling out to Bilbo when he woke weakly, sick, and alone at the top of Ravenhill? It was only the fact that someone was trying to find him made Bilbo realize he was wearing the ring, and that moment was the first that brought to mind the ring's drawbacks. What might have become of him if he'd tried to stumble down off the cliff with it on, I don't like to think... And if Bilbo hadn't heard Thorin's parting words, how different might the years afterwards have been? Bilbo's choice to relinquish the ring was such a near thing, one wonders if things might have gone very differently after all, if not for the heart shown by those two little blue cloaked fiddling sons of Dis...

      I think Brand's death might have hit him the hardest.
      Bard was a grown adult who Dain expected to fight and yet made a friend while each other re-established their respective kingdoms. So there were definitely a lot of tussling back and forth as each other's interests could be in conflict. Bain was already born by the Five Armies, and was growing into the system already established by Bard and Dain, so things might have gone much smoother and they might have been friendlier.
      But Brand was a fresh start, the first king of Dale born in the restored kingdom with a neighboring Erebor. I can definitely picture Bain presenting Dain with a baby and having the Dwarf King act as an old grandfather figure to the boy as he grew up, teaching him and playing with him and beaming with pride as he became a man, and seeing that man die in front of him. I can imagine that grief was a major component of the vigor with which he wielded his old axe.
      The First was a colleague, the Second was a Friend, the Third was a Son.

    Dáin's achievements in the Battle of Azanulbizar are even more impressive when you realize that the youthful dwarves, Fíli and Kíli, of Thorin's party were 82 and 77 respectively and that at 62, Gimli was too young to join the quest.

      Smaug differs a bit from the others due to the simple fact he possesses a driving trait Sauron could have used to gain his cooperation or even an alliance: draconic greed.
      So whilst not a servant of Sauron, he could have certainly become employed by him to wreak havok in the north, in exchange for even more treasure for the hoard.

    Do you think Sauron’s promise of returning Khazad Dum to the dwarves is something he could’ve kept? If I’m not mistaken NotR discussed in a previous video that the Balrogs (specifically in this case Durin’s Bane) didn’t necessarily hold any loyalty to Sauron and seeing that the Balrogs, the Istari, and Sauron were all Maiar, and Durin’s Bane still even ended up taking Gandalf with him as he fell, Sauron might have been able to handle the balrog but would that be a guarantee?

    • @Dinoman9877
      @Dinoman9877 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Deception is one of Sauron's primary weapons after all, and Dain himself can see the deception in this when he says he must consider what the message means 'under its fair cloak.'
      Sauron wouldn't be concerned about having to uphold his side of the bargain. Should the ring have been returned to him, the free lands of Middle-Earth would have fallen under his dominion, and Moria would have been the least of the dwarves' problems when they had brought about their own downfall, should they have accepted and given away Bilbo's location before Gandalf had become aware of their search.
      I also don't see it as entirely impossible that with the ring, Sauron's power may even have outstripped the Balrog's. He was Morgoth's chief servant after all, even over Gothmog, the lord of balrogs and likely strongest amongst their number, and this was long before Sauron had forged the ring to augment his strength.
      Sauron needn't have concerned himself with Durin's Bane until he was ready, and by that time his power would have matched if not eclipsed the Balrog's, so it would either submit to his rule, or succumb to his wrath.

      @@Dinoman9877And then consider that in the Second Age, Sauron was defeated three times by the Noldor and Numenoreans while he had the One Ring!! Defeat #2 wasn’t even a battle - his armies fled before the might of the Numenoreans! Staggering how badass those guys were in S.A.

    • @istari0
      @istari0 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that had he emerged victorious in the War of the Ring, Sauron would have been able to deal with Durin's Bane although I don't know that there would have been a reason for him to do that. Even in his weakened state Sauron was an extraordinarily powerful being. If you read the description Tolkien wrote of him in the Valaquenta in The Silmarillion, you get a real sense of this.

    • @kevinberardi6760
      @kevinberardi6760 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Sauron ~could~ have kept the promise. Sauron with the one ring restored to him would probably wreck Durins Bane if Gandalf the Grey killed it. I just don’t think that Sauron ~would~ have kept his promise.

    • @draochvar9646
      @draochvar9646 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dinoman9877 I don't think Sauron could have actually defeated Gothmog during their time if it had come down to it. Not if we go by Gothmog's VERY illustrious list of confirmed kills and victories.
      As badass as Sauron is, killing Feanor ain't on his wrapsheet. He got himself defeated by a man that was a shadow compared to the kings of the Noldor.

    I was re-reading the hobbit and I say this quote: “Trolls’ purses are the mischief, and this was no exception. “Ere, ‘oo are you?” it squeaked…” Bilbo is captured by the trolls shortly after. But is this the purse talking or something inside or is it just a literary device at work?

    Since you sometime interview and use the work of amazing artists (but also very well-known) who pay tribute to Tolkien, I think it would be a good idea to invite some other tributary artists who deserve at least an appearance. For example, the music you used in this video reminded me of Jim Kirkwood's King of the Golden Hall. The guy is a legend of dungeon synth (among other things). Artists of all kinds really help you form a more magic bond with Arda... especially musicians. For example, when I was first reading the Silmarillion, I descovered Blind Guardian's album - Nightfall in Middle-Earth... a masterpiece that combined with the book made a teenager back then forever belong with a good part of his soul to Tolkien's world.

    I've seen a lot of artwork that shows Dain Ironfoot with a red-colored axe. However, in my mind, I've always pictured it as his axe dripping with the blood of his foes. Granted that orc/goblin blood is black (I think), but that's how I imagined it when I first read it.
    Dain showed up and started taking names.

    I really wish PJ would've made Dain more important in the hobbit trilogy. Take some time away from Alfred and give us a more accurate Battle of Azanulbizar with a scene of Dain seeing the Balrog. Would connect to Fellowship so well... He wouldn't need to kill Azog either, they could keep the pale orc as the main villain and have Dain not chase/kill him because of the Balrog. Something like that. Great video on a great dwarf!
