Funny enough my current character for adventure league is a half-elf druid. I saw that there is a nonplayer race of elfs that can shift into a wolf. His mother is one of them and returned to the pack when he was old enough to care for himself. He started studying the ways of the druid so he can join as well
Within the first 3min I discovered why my HP wasn’t going up automatically- I made the mistake of choosing manual - now changed - went from 28 to 39 now that’s much better
Very good video Nate! But you forgot one very important thing for RP, set the alignment of your character. Nice work and always so good to hear the ending theme, it works like `healing melody` spell to me.
It tells you what ability's are best for each class when you are selecting it. Before you fully select it you can read about the class and all that. And that is when it tells you that important information.
Greetings Nate. Might not be the right video, but yesterday I posted the first part of a complete map creation workshop I'm doing here on TH-cam. I consider you as an individual with a vast knowledge of everything rpg, so I'd really appreciate some feedback on the job I'm doing so far. I want to gear my content towards rpg and fantasy art and hopefully make it the ultimate archive for rpg resources. Awesome content as always, keep up the great work. I draw great inspiration from this channel. Let me know if I can hook you up with any art. Cheers!
What about certain classes that come with specific ad ons and extra abilities? such as Cleric Domains and Barbarian Paths? The standard builder only allows one option on those things. How do you get more?
If you buy the players handbook on D&D Beyond, you will have access to all the options in the players handbook. The free options are limited to those in the basic rules.
One problem I have with dnd beyond is that it appears like you have access to everything for free yet if you pick anything outside of the phb they flat out make you pay for it. It's a total cash grab. I can't stand dnd beyond because they won't let you add sourcebooks you physically own and essentially make you buy it twice
The problem would be in how do you generate a specific code that allows that with verification. Like what if I bought a used phb and tried to register it but it’s already registered to someone else. You’re screwed
The thing is… DnD beyond isn’t owned by wizards of the coast. At lest it wasn’t when you made that comment. Only got bought like a couple months ago. So they are a separate company. It’s not a cash grab, it’s just licensing. They have plans soon to implement those codes though. At the very lest DnD beyond let’s you buy just the character creator content for cheap rather than the whole book
i own the player's handbook, sword coast guide, and xanthar's guide as hard copies, is there a way to use their content without having to buy it again on the marketplace?
If there are fairly basic items needed for spells - like fleece, string, wood, pins, etc do I need worry about equipping myself with them? At what price point do I need to worry about purchase those items?
Most of those items are covered by having a “component pouch” - or these items are often not needed if you have a spell focus (wand, staff, etc.) The exception is valuable items. A diamond worth 50 gp for example. Anytime it says a ____ worth _____ gp. That is an item you will need to purchase separately.
I'm a new guy, just bought Essentials, I found this to be very helpful for character sheets for my kids. You can take short or long rest within the character sheets too. Is there a way to level up, or should I just go into edit the character again?
To answer my own question, click on the portrait and manage levels. It seems to take care of things from what I can see. If someone with experience pokes around let me know please!
yeah my uncle was Irish that's where it comes from he had one that was a walking stick/cane but they could also have a business end to them like a club. google "A shillelagh or blackthorn stick is a wooden walking stick and club or cudgel, typically made from a stout knotty stick with a large knob at the top. It is associated with Ireland and Irish folklore." you can google pics. much harder than the buck & a quarter quarter staff lol (daffy duck robin hood cartoon reference). this is a good look at the site.
So the free version works on SRD, but if L'll buy some options there like books for example, then will I be able to construct my character with races, spells, weapons etc. coming from those books that I bought? This tool looks like something super helpful, but I need to know this. It seems logical, but then again it's not always like this :)
Hey great video as usual! I'm just starting to get into d&d and trying to be the best DM i can. if i print the character sheet won't it be difficult for my players to change things since they won't be able to delete anything? 😅
As a DM I have a player asking how they add a character to a campaign. I have sent them the link, but what else does the player need to do to add a character on their end? Do you have a video that describes this from both user perspectives?
@@WASD20 if you want to make a stick standard character with things missing from the players handbook which you have to pay almost the same amount as you would for the actual hard copy book, then yes.

...though I confess I still find the 5E steps for creating a character slightly "jarring" having spent years playing old school. Burned into my brain: 3d6 for each ability first, in strict order (STR. INT, WIS, DEX, CON, CHA); then choose race, restricted by your ability score rolls; then choose class, restricted by your ability score rolls; then everything else. Very limiting compared to the modern plethora of choices available, but also really helped streamline character creation, as long as you were prepared to work with whatever you got and accept that your character might suck :-)
Hello Nate, I was recently watching your map drawing videos, to gain inspiration, as I am trying to write a sci-fi story. I was wondering, how would you go about drawing a map from a desert planet, much like Tatooine for reference? I am trying to figure out how to go about this myself, so your input would be greatly appreciated, maybe a video would be in order? Anyhow, you seem like a great lad, gained a new sub.
If you find my video on how to fill in empty space on Maps you may find some ideas. I don’t have a magic bullet for deserts. Just draw a map, and figure it out as you go! Unless you are doing color, It can be pretty hard to represent terrain just as you imagined it. But it will be a map, and it will probably look cool!
Hi Nate, fellow Michigander D&D player here. Anyways... I'm new to the game overall (I played Dragon strike as a kid), but I have a pretty solid grasp on everything (thanks to your videos). I'm trying to incorporate my old Dragon Strike minis and some other D&D board game minis into my campaign that I'm getting ready to begin (for my wife and kids, family man here as well 😃). But the problem is, some monsters such as the Manscorpion, dont appear to have ANY sort of version available, even in the existing homebrews. Which brings me to this question, I can create hero's without any issue, but monsters appears to be more complicated. I tried getting on the d&d beyond site to create monsters, but quickly ran into issues of "I don't know what they are asking for", etc. Could you possibly do a monster homebrew on d&d beyond and walk us through the creation process, like you did here? I haven't found any videos on the subject, and would REALLY appreciate that. Thanks 👍
Sadly the app only has access to the “compendium “ (books). Not the other features of D&D Beyond. However the website is quite mobile friendly if you login through your browser.
The app only has the “compendium” which provides access to rule books, adventure books, etc. it’s basically your library if you own any of the books. Fortunately, their site is very mobile friendly so you can just login to D&D Beyond.com in your mobile browser. It works quite well.
Gith? You mean one of the most under developed race in D&D history? Well... you better ask your DM because a lot of it is going to have to be homebrew.
It didn't make the cut for the free stuff, but you can purchase that option. I think races are about 2 dollars each, or you can buy the entire Player's Handbook.
That’s not the way the 5th edition rules work, but there have been games and editions that did that, and obviously dungeon Masters are able to homebrew rules like that.
Understood, but it is still much more fun to have to think how to play a certain class/race when your scores do not meet what you want. Love you channel! Keep up the amazing quality and great content!
thats too rough for a game like dnd 5e, if im playing a lv 1 cleric healer and i have a negative two on wisdom then i wouldnt be able to heal. if im playing a fighter and i have only a plus one on str and dex and dont hit anything then it isn't fun missing all the time. no one wants to be burden.
I have no idea why people like D&D Beyond. It seems like absolute garbage. I own every physical book but I can only create the free rules characters on D&D Beyond and there is no easy way in the character creator to add a "Custom" option like there is on Roll20, so I am stuck using the free races and classes so if you play cleric you can ONLY be a life domain cleric. Awful
This was SO helpful man, thanks Nate! Really appreciate your D&D videos. Happy gaming.

Hey I don’t have the spellsection and my monk supposed to be able to use a monitor illusion cantrip... where can I add that?
Monks do not have spells.
Oh! Wait. Hmm. You might just have to manually record that. Not sure! Does the cantrip come from your race?

With a free account I believe the limit is six. With a subscription there is no limit.
