There's that scene in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle where this song comes on the car radio, and they both complain that it sucks, but nobody changes it, and then it cuts to the two of them a minute later both singing along at the top of their lungs and crying. That's the public sentiment on this song in a nutshell.

    Being 1990, I don't really consider this a "'90s song," definitely an '80s one.
The '90s scene wasn't coming together yet. Over in Seattle, a little joint called Sub Pop Records had just published the first album by a little band called Nirvana, but it was 1991 when the "Seattle Sound" exploded and changed music as we know it with grunge rock. Suddenly, the whole musical vibe was shifting -- at the same time as hip-hop becoming more accepted too. REM was starting to explode despite being popular on the "college" music scene. That "college" scene exploded and we got the alternative/grunge/post-punk revolution that rocked my world and helped guide me into my 20s.
This was kind of the "end" of the '80s sound, the height of it.
But I honestly couldn't tell you another Wilson-Phillips song -- this is the only one I know, so they weren't huge, but I'm sure their catalog is solid, just not "commercial."

Not for the reason anyone else would ever even care about, but the synth bassline in it, hand-played, changed everything about how I played and wrote my own synth basslines, forever.

Michelle Phillips once stood next to me very drunk at the valet stand of the Bel Age Hotel in Los Angeles and I didn't even look over to see that it was her until she walked up to get into her car, and I was like, damn! And, at that exact spot a few months later, I almost walked straight into Sheila E as she was getting out of her limo, like literally our faces are right up in each other and we were both probably thinking , and then 5 seconds later it hit me that was Sheila E, and I was like DAMN. So, obviously my point is that you should play some Sheila E.
