What I love about this scene is Tony trying to say goodbye to his uncle. But he knows it’s to late and he has already gone. And he never got the closure he needed. Such a powerful scene. Seeing Tony holding back the tears is hard to watch.

When Tony realizes he isn't faking it, you can see him actually have pity for his uncle.

    • @korawitbuttramee618
      @korawitbuttramee618 3 ปีที่แล้ว +160

Not to mention that he was paranoid that Junior might fake his dementia because that was how Livia messed with his head before. By the time Tony decided to see if Junior was actually senile or not, it was already too late. Junior is nothing more than a shell of his former self and Tony had to accept that he was too late to see his uncle for one last time. To Tony, the Junior he was talking to in the psyche ward is practically a ghost of some stranger wearing his uncle's face. Here, we see Tony went from trying to get under Junior's skin because he thought Junior was manipulating him but after he realized Junior is senile for real, he genuinely tried to make Junior remember him.
2:11 is when Tony finally realized that his uncle is gone for good and he didn't even get the closure of burying the hatchet or saying goodbye.
On the side note, we could trace everything wrong with Tony to Livia and how she treated him

    My grandmother had dementia.
She was always talkative and happy to see me. Her symptoms started around the time I was 25. She died when I was 34.
It started out with asking the same questions throughout a conversation. Not in a row, but after 5-6 minutes, she'd ask the same questions.
Eventually, she had to be put in a home for people with that disease.
Paramedics had to take her to the psych ward at a hospital because she threw a chair at another resident. (she got a bladder infection and became the incredible hulk. It's a real thing for people who have dementia.)
I visited her when she was in the psych ward. There were some actually insane people there.
I sat with her for about an hour. Taking. She didn't have any idea who I was. But she was so polite and sweet, as she usually was.
I talked about my wife and children, my job, etc. I was torn on explaining to her that she should remember me or not. It was frustrating to be honest.
As I was leaving, she grabbed my hand and thanked me for coming. She started to cry. I think for maybe 4 seconds she remembered who I was.
She died a couple of months later.
My point is, this scene is pretty accurate. Well done.
    Miss you Mimi.
Edit: I wanted to add a few details.
She was in education her whole life.
She had a doctorate and the last ten years of her life she was an elementary school principal and was loved.
Around that time she divorced my grandfather.
    She was mostly alone.
Our family visited weekly though. She definitely wasn't ignored.
I think the lack of a challenge/occupation definitely contributed to her decline.
I just wanted to vent. Thank you.
    EDIT NUMBER TWO:
Apologies the story is disjointed. I was drunk when I was telling it. Generally the only time I get emotional.

I’d go sit with her at the nursing home and try to remind her who I am. The saddest thing for me was my father her son died a few years prior of cancer and id struggle with reminding her that he was gone sometimes I would because I’ didn’t want to lie other times I would , it was the only silver lining of her disease , she couldn’t quite grasp the full depths of her only sons death. She would show flashes of memory as uncle June does here and the way Tony reacted I would have all of those emotions all at once

This scene is a testament to how much of a waste Junior's life was, and how unrewarding the mafioso lifestyle really is. He wasn't an unintelligent guy, so he should have been able to do something positive with his life. Instead he made a livelihood out of hurting people and screwing them out of their money. What does he have to show for all the blood he spilled at the sunset of his life? He's dying a lonely death in a psyche ward without any family to keep him company and no legacy to speak of. The crappy little gang he and his brother ran is still crappy and little, and it's implied that the FBI is closing in to snuff it out for good. Even if Junior's memory was intact, what memories does he have that he could look back on with any sort of fondness? He spent his whole life consumed by bitterness and envy. He always wanted something more and no amount of ill-gotten wealth could fill that hole. Even if he was mentally cognizant, there are no glory days for him to remember because he never found fulfillment with anything he did.
It concerns me when I see people in the comment sections for these videos admiring Tony and saying he's cool, because the show is arguing the precise opposite. Tony, Junior, and the other mobsters are pitiful losers. They devote their lives to this unsustainable lifestyle of cruelty that ensures they'll all meet a bad end sooner or later.

There's no denying people liked Tony at the beginning - but towards the end of the show Tony became a REAL bastard - which I think was deliberate by Chase. Its no wonder Carlo ended up flipping - if Tony fucked off "honour and loyalty" like he does - then why should ANY member of that Family give Tony an ounce of loyalty when he clearly has no regard for it himself?!
In the end, its all fucking Livia's fault anyway. Like Tony reminds her in Season 1 about Rocco Alatore - Rocco and Tony's dad Johnny were going to go into business together - Rocco was the brains and Johnny would put up the cash to get the business started. Like Livia said, "He was a real go-getter that Rocco. You know they're billionaires now?" - Tony comments how the business opportunity could have been the way out of the mob life for all of them - But Livia wouldn't let Johnny do it. So he carried on, stuck on the train track of mob life, which eventually sucked Tony in. Yeah - all fuckin' Livia's fault!!

This one where he teared up while walking away and the one where he asked Junior why doesn't he say nice things to him like I love you. Someone you’ve known for your whole life looks at you like a complete stranger is heartbreaking.

For some reason I get the impression, right when Tony realizes Junior doesn’t know who he is, that he forgives him for the shooting.

Probably the most amazing thing about this show is Junior has an account working for him who’s from another galaxy and people like Tony know this.

Sure, Tony was a criminal of the highest order. But how can you not feel for him in this heart rending scene?

When Tony walked out I could finally see that he never had the makings of a varsity player.

My father developed early dementia over the last 6 months,he was so confused at times,he's 75 years young,he was so intelligent before it,I'v had to take his car keys and hide them,we couldn't leave him alone as he'd take his medication twice or even 3 times a day,he got covid 3 weeks ago and ended up in hospital,he beat the covid but his mind is gone now and he lives in his own world, talking to his dead relatives and seeing things that dont exist,he's in a nappy and is refusing to eat,we're waiting as he slowly die's but really he died 6 months ago when the dementia took his mind, its a heart breaking way for your parents/loved ones to end up

Saddest scene of the show.....for all of Junior’s faults, nobody deserves to go out like this.

A lot of us have been there. It's truly fucking indescribable when a loved one looks into your eyes and has no idea who you are.
