What a fantastic video.. I had a Viking mb655 absolutely fantastic machine...EXCEPT the drive.. 3 drive cables in 18 months owning it.. Absolutely great content. 💯👍💯
If the chain is stretched then you should change the spur gears as they wear to suit the worn chain until you get a sloppy drive train as you had that grinds and crunches. You did the right thing changing everything. 👍
Great video! The new chain with the old gears was still a bit loose but it looked good with the new gears, that good call ordering all the parts and doing it all at once. I never see this type of drive in Texas but if I ever do, I will be ready 🙂
Hi Mick, love the channel. Quicky for you. Belt keeps jumping off my stihl 545,main drive pulley. Any ideas how it tensions? There's no tension spring I can see on the gear box like on other setups, or am I missing something? The pulley does spring clamp onto the belt and so "grabs" it, but after a few hours seems to throw it off again.
@@themowerman hi Mick i got the rollers off and refited the bearings and pinnion off the old rollers..but I cant get the second freewheel key back in, as the hole in the axle is covered with the second roller and pinnion. its got me baffled any ideas how to do it thanks
Hi mick, what do you know about the blade boss rubbing on the engine sump? I now have 2 of the 545 that both have the same issue. One has rubbed so much it has gone through the sump and dropped all the oil! Is there a simple fix to stop the other one getting to that point? Thanks
Hi Mick I have one of these Viking mowers. My lawn has a slight incline, when I go down drive works ok, on return you have to push the mower , no crunching noises. Any ideas?
Hi Mick It's by far the smallest gauge chain I have ever seen on any rotary mower and a design fault. I am not sure why Stihl decided use such a tiny chain, it was always going to stretch? That's a repair I have had to do to a few times
Hey Mick I have this mower. It’s a few years old now , but still a good mower. Would like to know how you replace the drive cable. Mines broke up the top on the hook, repaired it a couple of times . Your help would be very appreciated. Thanks .
i have the bigger one, 21 inch with variable drive, the other day the drive started to work about half speed , do you think this is a gearbox problem, belt engages the drive without slipping, any thoughts , cheers, ps never touched variable speed lever
Hey Mick, the belt had actually come off the pulley and was riding around the collar, looked like it was ok through the little inspection hatch, took blade off and large guard and all became clear, cheers mate
@@themowerman I’ll give it ago as one cog has the roll pin which I knocked out successfully to change but the other one I’ll have a see if it unscrews as so far all I’ve managed is getting the circlip off but looks like there’s a roll pin in there
Also most of the bearings are rubber sealed but their not infallible and do get moisture in them and have a habit of siezing over winter when the machine is left to stand, they are all replaceable but it can be a bit of a mission. As mick said go straight for the cable first, moisture in that causes corrosion of the inner cable, take it out to make it easier to work on and run some WD40 or GT85 down the inner cable to loosen things up.
It’s all well and good Mick to replace with new parts, but there is no profit to be made at the end of the day. That mower stands you £55.00. You won’t sell it for much more. Add your time onto that and it not worth doing. I would have just took a link out of the chain.
@@themowerman nice one Mick. I find you can’t spend too much on them because of the profit margins. It would be hard to make a living out of it as a business. I just do it as a hobby. But still, I love the community such as the likes of you, Taryl and Mustie etc. Keep up the good entertainment Mick.
Hi Mick !. It's a poor design that mate. The chain looks too big even when it's new !. No provision to lube the chain to help reduce premature wear happening. Arh ....... Maybe that's the whole idea Mick 🤣. If that was my mower, I would apply a thin film of grease or some motor bike chain lube to that chain. No wonder the gears wear and the chain stretches. Great video OBTW Mick !.
