First Time Riding The BC Ferry Northern Adventure from Prince Rupert to Haida Gwaii

Friends brought me along on their vacation to Haida Guaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) and this is my trip over on the biggest ferry I've ever been on! It's roughly a 6 hour trip. They showed a movie but it was the same one both ways which was disappointing because it sadly wan't my type of movie. The weather was very blustery starting out (so hard to get good audio), but got nice once we reached Skidegate! So happy to have experienced this adventure.

Great video - love the sound quality especially. I had an opportunity to go on the Northern Adventure years ago, one of the more unusual ships in the BC Ferries fleet.
Cool! I haven’t had the chance to travel on BC ferries, this was my first huge one, so pretty exciting for me. PS I LOVE your moniker and thumbnail picture 😀
Thanks for posting. Fun to watch. Unfortunately, BC Ferries "renovated" a 4 year old ship, and part of that was to convert the only forward facing view lounge to a "kids zone" where if you want the magnificent forward views there is competition from noisy kids and big screen TVs that interfere with the benefit of the windows. "Unencumbered by the thought-process" at BC Ferries.
Ohhhh ya didn’t think about that but good thought. Not too smart with their design eh?

That was really interesting about all the shipping that goes on there and the deep harbour! Kind of freaky not to be able to see land!! Great job!

Tsimshian territory to Haida Territory on the Northern Adventure! I didn't know that you have to back onto this ferry? Good to know. I haven't been back to Haida Gwaii for over 10 years, I sure would like to take a trip there soon.

Love your video, except for the reading about the port functions (but read well). I also love the ferry service to Vancouver Island which I have taken many times. BC Ferries do a great job in my opinion.

In 2008 at Prince Rupert,
I was on a ferry on the island of queen charlotte.
I suddenly remembered that time, and I was looking for queen charlotte Island in Utube.
After watching this video, I was so absorbed in my memory that I wrote a reply.
If I remember correctly, I remember a new ferry operating regularly from Prince Rupert to Queen Charlotte Island around 2009.
If I have a chance someday, I want to go again.anyway..Thanks to you, I'm watching a good video.

Wow! Thanks for taking us along on your vacation so we can see these beautiful places. The furthest I've been North is Bella Coola BC. You need to visit that area. Canada's best kept secret. My brother lived there several years building a retreat there. It mostly an Indian village and only 1 road to it.

The only road going to it is very scary. 18% grade on a gravel road. What is so awesome is the town is sea level and then the peaks are straight up to 8-9 thousand feet. Lots of grizzlies so take your bear spray. My brother was stalked by a cougar that killed his dog, so the villagers hunted it down. He was also pursued by a grizzly while working at his work site. He played dead and that is what saved him and an angel. I heard that years ago an Adventist missionary wrote a book about Bella Coola and that the villagers would meet the supply trucks at the top of the 'hill' to unload the truck because it was so steep they didn't want to drive down it. I would love to go back for a visit and take my husband this time. Last time I was single and went with a girlfriend. @@thehealinghiker

Are you afraid of the open sea?
Not really. I enjoy ferry rides. And, when I worked in Korea, I flew over that ocean ten times...(five return trips).
That’s a lot of flying over oceans! I’ve never done that either! Someday. . .
Yes! Feared for my life and crew several times.

The Northern Adventure holds less than 100 cars. The Vancouver Island ferries carry over 400 cars. They are big and always packed full. Similarly the ferries that travel from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland hold about 300 cars. My favourite ferry routes I’ve ever been on are the Alaska Marine Highway to Dutch Harbor (it’s 3-4 days in length from Homer, Alaska, depending on weather) and the ferry from Copenhagen to Iceland (2 days).
