MV Northern Expedition - Great Bear Rainforest, Coastal Fjords & Whales, Port Hardy To Prince Rupert

- The MV Northern Expedition is a roll-on and roll off (RORO) ferry that runs through the rainforest and coastal fjords of British Columbia. It runs from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert along the Pacific coast of North America.
An 18 hour event, there is much to see, do, and experience on the ferry as we travel 500kms through mountians, fjords, and the great bear rainforest. Whales, dolphins, and many other marine species can be seen from the vessel. Volcanoes, glaciers, and untouched wilderness are all part of the voyage.
We arrive late at night in Prince Rupert with the warmth of the city lights and the safe haven of a port greeting us. After disembarking, we continue for another journey up north in northern Canada.

As a born and raised Vancouver Islander I love seeing how tourists view our home. BC Ferries however, really sucks. Their whole system has become so unaffordable for most of us living here we can’t even leave. The services onboard have mostly gone and it’s just a major corporation raking in millions in tourist dollars. Many of us wish it was run as an essential highway like it should be.

Hi there! Found this video on random. Based on the whales and fishies I'm guessing you traveled in August? I work on this boat. Thank you for liking our boat. We try to take care of it. The Adventure you based in the night only sails for the summer months, it doesn't handle winter very well. We've never gone to Kitamat. The Expedition travels up up and down the coast in summer, stopping at either Klemtu or Bella Bella (never both), and in winter we also do the back and forth between Rupert and Haida Gwaii. I didn't see myself in the video so you were there during my off time. Hope you enjoyed your trip! And yes, book early for an outside cabin. I promise most people hang out on the back decks when they're outside.
And yes, you can land a helicopter on the top deck. It's where crew hang out when we want outside time in peace.
i love seeing whales...minke i think, but so many times cruise ships have had them wedged on top of the bulbous bow...good to see the captain stopped on this voyage

Your ferry route is NOT through English Bay or Juan de Fuca Strait. You are confused.
I sailed on the Queen of the North in the 80s. My cabin was below the car deck, probably near the waterline. I would like to go again. Thanks

May I suggest in the future to be a bit more clear with the annotations. For example, at timestamp 9:30, you gave background about the ship and how it was launched in Germany in 2008. When I first read the note, it made it seem like you were in Germany while boarding the ferry.
Great video otherwise. I had no idea Vancouver Island was a different tectonic plate than the rest of North America. That is so interesting!
At 4:53 Big Rock comes into view. There is a Native story about this rock about how a bear jumped from Quadra Island in the back ground. His back foot got wet and he was turned to stone because of it. That is a poor telling , if anyone know it properly please tell it.

The Northern Expedition is the replacement for the ferry that used to do the route, it sank. the first and second officers got all hot 'n bothered while on duty and ran her onto some rocks ripping the bottom open. an emergency can happen at any time.

These guys think BC has a lot of routes…hahahahaha. Nothing compared to Japan. Many have first class restaurants with big staterooms that really are like a high end hotels. When people don’t travel internationally much they think what they have is great usually because the propaganda tells them so. The trains and buses are amazing in Japan too. Plus they have sleeper buses. We don’t have 10% of what Japan has and their modes of travel are super clean and they take pride in keeping everything so clean no matter how old it is.

It's part of the accretionary belt of North America, a series of terranes that have progressively joined over millions of years. It the accretionary wedge in the subduction zone with the juan de fuca plate.
Vancouver Island was once connected to the mainland. During the last ice age, sea levels were significantly lower, which exposed land bridges that connected islands and landmasses that are now separated by water. As the ice melted and sea levels rose, these land bridges were submerged, resulting in the current separation of Vancouver Island from the mainland of British Columbia.

It’s funny how they think the ferry is so nice. These are absolute crap next to what some other countries have. Check out Japans ferries for instance. Japan has so many ferries and they are so much cheaper too.
