You guys! We finally knocked out the attic insulation in the 14x14 diy addition. We used paper faced batts for the bottom layer and used unfaced rolls for the top two layers. This will give us just about a R60 rating which should be nice and keep us warm and cool.

When doing your cuts, it’s a lot easier to cut the glass side instead of the paper side. Best if you can lay the paper down on a piece of wood but the glass cuts much easier. If you cut the paper first it tends to snag.

Also tearing with your hands will work but it tends to embed glass between your fingers which is extremely itchy.

I was going to ask about the toasty insulation and what happened to the floors but then the next episode is all about that. Great work and thanks.

Never wore long sleeves in years of Insulating attics. Just rinse real well and/or shower with cold or cool water . Warm or hot water opens the pores and the insulin particles will get in there and itch you to death. Long sleeves hold the fibers and drives them into the skin. Short sleeves are the way to go.

Yes.....the KEY is NOT to scratch that itchy skin.
Your remodel is Looking good, but did I miss the kitchen cabinet, etc install ?

Here's a trick for insulation that seems stuck in your skin after working with it.
Take a hot shower and go from hot to cold for a while each while rubbing arms and neck etc. Do several cycles and it will all go away.

Was there a reason you went with 3 rows of R-19 instead of something with a higher R value? I am about to the insulation phase of my project and I’m trying to figure out what route to go.

I’m not quite sure if it was what they had, you could do probably 2 30’s just making sure they’re criss crossed and paper on the bottom only

Been following along with your 14x14 addition , awesome work man and love seeing the progress, I'm a little bummed you didn't firm the roof , maybe you could do a short showing and talk about shingling The Valleys .. would of been cool to see . I my self got a quote for a ruff in for the exact same thing , except I wanted cathedral ceilings it was 20k here in MI , but that also includes a 42in footer an a brace to the existing cinder block basement . By doing it your self, what do you think your cost was for the ruff in ?

Thanks David! That would be a good idea for the video, maybe ill record one soon. The project has been taking so long as were doing 1000 other things and working but i think its going to be around 15-20 for the whole thing.

You insulated with short sleeves. Did you itch for a week?
