I want to see more shows about Japan (or other countries) with this level of authenticity.
Brilliant series. I think that the best thing streaming. Will miss all the characters and story line. It was amazing to see Japanese history so well portrayed.
I have found this series amazing. I have read the book and love how they have shifted the focus to the incredible culture and history of the Japanese people. Every sequence of action has deeper meaning that is you as a viewer are interested can dig deeper and learn what the movement of the fan means or the meaning of a kimono color or layer symbolized. Absolutely amazing.
A nice review, but again, people aren't giving the Production Designer and Art Directors enough credit for creating the authenticities
Love the show😊
I think the female cast was outstanding and so fascinating than the male characters. Mariko, Fuji the consort, Kiku the geisha, and Lady Ochiba gave memorable performances. IMO, Toranaga and Ishido were one-dimensional, and Cosmo Jarvis was miscast in this series.
As a TV series it was sumptuous & amazing. As a book adaptation, it was sadly written for modern audiences. The white male was written unkindly & many other changes were made which made the series inferior in several areas to the 1980s mini series in its adaptation.
I lived in Japan for 15 years and am married to a Japanese. I traveled extensively throughout Japan and can tell you there are places in Japan that looks eerily similar to the production location.
i respectfully disagree. That is part of the problem though. I have lived in Japan fpr a while too (first arrived in 87) and looking at the forests and landscapes in the series they wouldn't have looked as "Nordic" as it looks in the series, especially not pre Edo ^era..C.W Nicol would have been a great person to have on the set. As action goes it's ok, but there are things, despite the sales pitch of claiming authenticity that could/should have been made better. Like the style of the castle walls that wouldn't have been common before the Edo-era.
In the last episode of the official Shogun podcast the producer Hiroyuki Sanada revealed that Canada provided logistic advantage, not only because many nature settings could emulate Japan, but also because there were minimal commutings from the trailers or hotels to the studios and locations. And the Japanese locations would be always close to modern buildings, wires, etc, so it would bring another challenge for the production.

No Matter, having Japanese cast and language is good enough for me. Don’t be so critical that you complain that there’s no Time Machine!!!!
Feels like the set would be easier to do if filmed in Japan.
FX should do a prequel!
Clavell would have to have written one. If these guys tried to do one based off the series, it would be a disaster
Sanada in Mortal Kombat as Scorpion = wearing yellow
Sanada in Shogun as Toranaga = wearing yellow
coincidence…?😅
I love this show but I think it would've seriously been flawless if they just added more action sequences, especially the war. I know it's based on a book, but they've made their own changes and adding more fight sequences could've easily been one of them.
THey just got the okay for a season 2
Finally, someone who pronounces "Sanada" correctly!
I could tell it was not filmed in Japan due to one reason as those forest doesn't look anything like Japan as I been to Japan and somehow the scenery doesn't look right but the rest was so accurate with set pieces and the respect for the culture . That why I love shogun so much
you have no idea what you're talking about. I used to live there for 4 years and motorbiked throughout the country. There are forests like that in Japan.😂 It's not all bamboo forests like most westerners think. You dont think maples,, conifers, junipers, and redwoods exist in japan?
@@obryn I been to Japan and somehow it's doesn't look the same like pacific northwest. It is a matter of opinion and you are right that it is not always bamboo as just tired Asian trope that think of Japan
I thought i read somewhere that the confirmed having 2 more seasons
when I read "Season 2 for Shogun?" I immediately block that channel and unsubscribe, because it's just unseriously. Everyone knows, there will be no Season2... sigh and sayonara.
Серија је дивна!
I just hope the don't spend too much and go in the way of ROME
A lot of babble and repetition and not so much content in this video… it doesn’t live up to the clickbait title! 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
ya it sucked I hoping it would be cool but no you screwed up a great story
I know James Clavell is rolling in his grave at this abomination.
Yeh. Imma disagree. It's not some woke BS which is usually put out nowa days. But a retelling of the story using modern tech & a slightly different script. With a huge emphasis on authenticity & respect of Japanese culture/history. I actually think he would be amazed by what his words became.
I doubt it.
No book can be completely put into film.
Every film or series would be 1000 hrs long.
You don’t know, your opinion is that but I think it is really quite faithful enough and beautiful enough with a lot of respect for Japanese culture for him to be very happy with it.
Ah’ no, it’s as good as it gets as an adaptation.
I read Shogun when it first came out and revisited it many, many times. I knew within the first 30 minutes this version wasn’t going to stick to the book’s narrative. Just appreciate this for what it is. It’s different, but it’s stunning.
