Yesterday, Ida Haendel passed away. She was a legendary violinist and a dear friend of mine. I’m immensely grateful I had the chance to know and work with her closely. She will be dearly missed.
Christine Jezior Her passing marks the end of an epoch. I venerated her.she leaves behind a void that can never be filled. Condolences and prayers from Calcutta,India.
After performing the Sibelius concerto at Helsinki in 1949, Ida Haendel received the following letter from Sibelius: "You played it masterfully in every respect. I congratulate myself that my concerto has found an interpreter of your rare standard."
And this comes from someone who would know! Anyone who hasn't heard this gentleman's playing should definitely check it out. (I heard you play the Beethoven with the Harrisburg Symphony about ten years ago. It was spectacular; I knew you'd be moving on to bigger and better things.)
